Motown made a good choice signing the four tops. Levi had probably the best vocal of all the Motown singers. Brillaint! The song gives me goosebumps. There won't be vocalists like this anymore. American pop/RnB, (whatever that means nowadays) seriously (with the exception of a few artists) need to look back to move forward
@bfer95 Both versions are great, I just feel the Four Tops version more powerful, right down to the powerful bass drums and of course Levi's voice. Thanks for responding.:o)
Just goes to show that costumes, special effects, inane dancing, meaningless lyrics and electronic music, when all summed up, are no substitue for talent, dignity and class.
@TubeNumber1USA I love the 4 tops 2 and your right but I also loved the british bands of that era just keep this in mind levi and for tops had incredible vocal talent , still a 16 year old wrote that song a classic amazing
Does anyone remember a version by a British group called The Truth which got released on Decca Records in 1967. I remember it getting into the charts. If anyone has it can they upload it. I haven't heard it in over forty years. It was also an excellent version.
Just saw the Tops Sunday Night with the Temptations. Although only Duke remains of the original lineup, the love of the music has transcended to a new generation. God give you rest Levi, Obie and Lawrence because your music has brought joy to fans for over 50 years and shows no sign of stopping. And thank you Duke for giving younger generations the chance to experience heaven on earth.
I like the Four Tops version FAR better than the Left Banke's version. The Left Banke's version sounds too wimpy, but the Four Tops version sounds very classy. Four Tops rocks!
This is the best version of this song. anything these guys put their voices to it always came out sounding beautiful. and with levi on lead what else can you say, this man's voice need to be put in the smithsonian. never will be another voice like levi. RIP. LEVI,OBIE AND LARRY. LOVE YOU GUYS.
This when music was music, not the rap crap we hear today about cop killing, women beating, every other word a foul mouth explitive, a sexual explict comment meant to demean women or authority. These motown songs were clearly owned by the Black Groups who sang about love, family and life in a good way. The garbage we hear today blasting out of cars is just noise with words that preach hate.

I really love this group. Sugar Pie Honey Bunch, Just Ask the Lonely, etc...reminds me of my elementary school day when my brothers and I went to Double Oaks swimming pool every week day to swim, swimming lessons in the morning, and pay quarter for afternoon swimming all day long, and listen to the Four Tops on the juke box. Music played all day. What sweet memories.

I was 17 when I first heard this and had to pull over my 54 Ford and listen to it. I knew it was The Four Tops immediately, but I thought, my God, it sounds like Bob Dylan with Soul! Stopped me in my tracks. With all respect to The Left Banke, The Four Tops gave this song the justice it deserved. An American classic and one of the finest songs ever recorded. Glad we can claim it. Thanks!
Ohhhhhhh, I remember hearing the Four Tops sing this live, starting when they did that famous Temps versus Tops concert at Radio City Hall in the 1980s....Saw them a few times after that...Great soul music doesn't get much better than this, folks!
This would be a pretty good example of a soul singer...."just walk away Renee"....took the original and ran with it...made it even better....a rare thing indeed.
I don't think I love a song more then this, I hold a sandan in Karata, I've taken many an ass whopping and never cryed. But this bring tears to my eyes. What I wouldn't give to relive those day. To Freddy,Paul, Chiky,Alex and all the others I ran with. Where ever you might be:)
This song tugs at the heart strings. Brings back warm memories of Calor Gas heating, cold grey winters, chilblains and large family gatherings bliss pure bliss!!!
@iw32 Nobody can hold a candle to the Four Tops, and Walk Away Renee is a heartbreaking classic still, after all these years. I can't think of another song that speaks of desolation and loss so poignantly, and with such a cracking soul tune.
These guys got together in 1954 and after 10 years of sticking together when most groups back then split up when they saw no success happen after a year or 2, Larry, Duke, Levi and Obie stuck it through, and their hard work payed off, these guys truly had an inner love for one another unlike the Temptations where things started to fall apart in 1963 with the dissmissal of Al Bryant, then David Ruffin, the Four Tops were till Death do they part, 1954 to 1997 they kept the 4 original members
the 2 dislikes must not know what good music is. The Four Tops were AMAZING and a league of their own. The Tamla Motown sound was one that will NEVER be recreated again. Once in a lifetime experience and amazing to have all those recordings still around. I will recommend Phil Collins' new album Going Back as a great listen to compliment a Motown collection. He pours his heart and soul in recreating some of Motown's finest tracks. A real musician will appreciate that album also.
As good live as on record, There will never be any other man that can sing like Levi.. I was lucky I did see them over ten times in London Hammersmith Odeon 1970s took them three songs to get the PA going believe me he never needed it he just carried on singing... and with the tops behind him he was unstoppable I grew up with this music and will die with it.. The amazing Motown sound at it’s best.
Unlike many Motown groups, The Four Tops stayed together because nobody got greedy & they never left their hometown. I am only 43 and The Four Tops are my favorite group from Motown. Back in the 90's I was in a bank and I can't remember which one it was, but one of them came in the bank. He was definately a regular because the teller's knew him. It might had been Levi. I wish I can remember who it was. I am proud to be from Motown. Levi Stubbs had an amazing voice
This version is definately better than the original. The Left Banke did a good job on this song but The Four Tops took it to another level. Levi will always be awesome.
great song but they were all good we will still be listening to this when the rappers will have gone by the way of the dodo u dont hear fowl language poping caps in people i mean how many women are realy interested in some fat git in an ovrsize teashirt and baggy trouser because the are all he can get to fit the blubber
I love both the Left Banke's version and this one, but the Four Tops' version has SOMETHING that I really like... it might be the "oohs" in the background or the instrumental part in the middle... I don't know. The 4 Tops' version was far more popular on "oldies" radio in Seattle...
The late and great Levi Stubbs must be teaching the angels how to sing properly in Heaven now. God bless you Levi ! This is the most haunting and melancholy of all tamla motown songs.
Hmmm...I always kinda thought that the reason the Andantes were used on so many 4 Tops records was because their harmonies needed "a lift" or they sang too softly...they are AMAZING alone!! I don't see where The Andantes were needed AT ALL!!
This was the opening number of their concert at The Dome Brighton in ??1971 or thereabouts.
They started singing off stage and when they walked on singing this number...The place exploded!!!!!!!!!!
Cos the rich dudes who bought the expensive seats didn't like it, they erected these huge 12 foot signs, The Dome then warned us about getting out of our seats and getting chucked out at following concerts.
The first group to have ever done this. It was a revolution.
These four gentlemen were the epitome of class and dignity. Sadly, Duke is the last surviving member, but Levi, Obie, and Lawrence will never be forgotten. All respect to The Left Banke for this memorable song, but as alexalot 23 says, Levi took this song all the way to soulville and beyond.
levi stubbs best vocalist ever. this track and film surperb. in my top ten. backing vocals have been multitrated or xtra singers involved. but still great.
:@lovethemuisc: Levi Stubbs WAS, IS and WILL ALWAYS BE the GRATEST LEAD VOCALIST of ALL times (Just ask the VOICE!) but NOT The Four Tops, If he thought that he would have, could have, but NEVER DID go solo because he had a lot RESPECT for for his BANDMATES!!!!!. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!.
The Left Banke wrote and recorded a really good song. The Four Tops--in large part because the late, great Levi Stubbs had a one-in-a-lifetime voice--covered it and produced a great, always-remember song. Wish there were still groups standing on street corners in the evening emploring, developing, and refining vocal gifts and possibilities. These "4"did that when they were just kids, and look what came out of that. A legacy to be proud of.
:@missmaryherself: AMEN TO THAT SISTER!. Brothers standing on the street corners honing their vocal and performing skills, Stevie Wonder said it best I WISH THOSE DAYS COULD COME BACK ONCE MORE!.
@missmaryherself They will never be forgotten...Do U know what high school they went to in Detroit seems like everyone went to either North eastern, Northwestern or Northern? Just curious.
Bliss...........this is music with class.

This version is definately better than the original. The Left Banke did a good job on this song but The Four Tops took it to another level. Levi will always be awesome.

I stand corrected. These guys were swinging for the upper decks when they hit this song. Left Banke should be proud of this re-make.

The 4 tops and Left Banke both did a great job with this song. One of my Favorite songs of all time.

Wow was that good!
What happened to American popular music?
Why is music today so vulgar?
What happened?
Oh well... we have these gems from better days.
God bless all.

Never were there two "deeper" singers than Levi Stubbs or Marvin Jr.

The Tops were 3 steps ahead and miles above the crowd.
I cannot imagine a world without their amazing music.
