aye cenk, i'm foreign to american policy making and all that but it seems to me that the overriding problem in american democracy is senators and political figures being bought off by lobbyists and large corporations. the american people are no longer getting served, the corporations are. Is there any chance that a law or amendment gets introduced and passed that states that lobbying via financial pay outs to political actors bank accounts or anything of the sort becomes illegal?
The problem in America is that we do not have federally or state funded elections, we have corporate funded elections. From what I understand we are one of the few if not the only westernize country that functions this way. We also have a two party monopoly system that prohibits other parties from participating as well as their voters from voting in primary elections. There's no way out for us because the powers in control would have to relinquish control in order to reform the current system.

The unemployment numbers are abating. They are slowly beginning to to stop rising and will then, hopefully, start declining. That's how it always works in an employment recovery.
I would like to believe it is going that direction, but the decline in new filings does not necessarily predict that new jobs will show up. The best way to predict that employment numbers will improve is to create jobs. What I am hearing is a lot of wishful thinking in high places about how jobs will spontaneously arise (such as from potential green industries or tax cuts), but no plans to actually create jobs. I am tired of the Dems pretending that "likely" means something.

aye cenk, i'm foreign to american policy making and all that but it seems to me that the overriding problem in american democracy is senators and political figures being bought off by lobbyists and large corporations. the american people are no longer getting served, the corporations are. Is there any chance that a law or amendment gets introduced and passed that states that lobbying via financial pay outs to political actors bank accounts or anything of the sort becomes illegal?

The problem in America is that we do not have federally or state funded elections, we have corporate funded elections. From what I understand we are one of the few if not the only westernize country that functions this way. We also have a two party monopoly system that prohibits other parties from participating as well as their voters from voting in primary elections. There's no way out for us because the powers in control would have to relinquish control in order to reform the current system.

In this case it was a health care bill, regardless of what it contained, the passing of the bill was the goal and he got it.

I would like to believe it is going that direction, but the decline in new filings does not necessarily predict that new jobs will show up. The best way to predict that employment numbers will improve is to create jobs. What I am hearing is a lot of wishful thinking in high places about how jobs will spontaneously arise (such as from potential green industries or tax cuts), but no plans to actually create jobs. I am tired of the Dems pretending that "likely" means something.

Govt loves corporations. The govt props up failures and funnels money to them. Corporations are not innately evil its just a business status. Many tiny, small, mom and pop business owners incorporate themselves. When govt props up failures, claim to "regulate", or subsidize, in actuality govt is protecting those corporations from competition which allows them to become monopolies. Some have better healthcare, this is true but they also take up to 70% of your income in taxes. Just look at Sweden. The nations that dont actually have horrible healthcare. Know anyone from Great Britain? Ask them about their healthcare and they will tell you just how "great" it is. You seem to love the talking points about how European health care is so great and we should model it.
Our system would work if there wasnt such a large discrepency between the have's and the have nots.

My British friends do not talk about a wonderful health care system back home. Now places like Sweden have great health care....they also have 70% income tax. Over there they still have the extremely wealthy elite but the gap is much smaller between the three other classes and that is what is focused on when you see propaganda about there being a smaller gap between rich and poor there.

We're getting the "change", unfortunately, there is no "hope". One of the things not mentioned in this piece, is the fact that when Obama campaigned, he said all health care reform debates and bills would be done with both sides at the table. Not only that, it will be broadcast on CSPAN for all Americans to witness....Not only is it not on cspan, it's being written behind closed doors by a handful of democrats, and voted on by democrats who HAVEN'T EVEN READ THE BILL!!

To me this is worse than if McCain won. I feel so alienated and angry right now, I'm seething. I feel duped because for once I didn't vote 3rd party. I refuse to vote for someone I don't believe in. I was fooled into voting Obama, I thought for once he wouldn't be like all the other Dems. And it seemed that he would be so much better than another 4 years of Republicunts. But lo and behold, his policies have been the same or worse. We need to fix the voting system so a 3rd party can win!

I wouldn't go that far. Remember Palin would've been our VP. Could you imagine Palin traveling the world representing the U.S. and advising McCain on policy? But I seriously understand where u are coming from. I can now understand why so few ppl vote. I will probably vote 3rd party in 2012 but it seems like the only solution is campaign finance reform to take the power away from corporations and back into the hands of the public.

I absolutely agree with you on the finance reform...it's an outrage that the current norms on capitol hill were ever allowed at all. I sometimes wonder where the outrage is...Americans need to get pissed and take action.

Obama also said most of these things would come if he was writing the bill. Since he didn't write the bill, and let the Senate and House write it he can say, "What could i have done". Letting Congress write it and pretty much showing no leadership was a way for him to give everything to the insurance companies while saddling his party and the GOP with all the blame. At least that was the intent, good thing he seems to be getting some of the blame himself. We elected a politician not a reformer.

What happened to Obama in the interim, between the campaign and running the country. Either Obama was a bold-faced liar, utilizing the populist sentiments of the people and using the terms "hope and change" as a means to obfuscate continuity; or he was honest in the campaign, and is now being lead down a wrong path by his advisers, if not worse!
