Hey Mr.Donald im going to plant some silver queen corn this year ;but i had an issue with it 2 years ago i had some cutworms and several other worms eat my ears of corn is there some way i can prevent the worms.. Thanks- Aaron
@baseplate2071 ... I don't spray for em so I really can't help you in that department. The little bit they eat here is just not worth spraying.......Donald
@baseplate2071 ... There may be some members on the forum that could help with what to spray for the worms. I just break the end off the ear with the worm......Donald
@WVlandnwater ...Sounds like you’re an organic gardener when you say using the blood meal so I really can’t help there. I use either 13-13-13 or 17-17-17 for my corn. Miracle Grow works good too if you don’t have too big of a corn patch……Donald
A suggestion that may be helpful to some. The old JD 71 FLEX planters are everywhere. These can be bought around a $100 each. I have a full size tractor and I can plant three rows on 25" center with the middle row center on the tractor. This gives me the wheels as a row marker, The flex was a wonderful reliable planter and can plant with the very best of them. This is also a great wildlife food plot planter.
awsome videos: I went back planting a garden last year. I watched your videos to get back in the swing of things and this year i have a great looking garden keep up the great work I'll post a video of my and let you know thanks Dan
Hey Donald, Its Daniel, I have been In my Dad's Video's and I thought it might be Cool to Have my Own video's, But thank's for the Information on the Sweet Corn, I have Tried growing it a Few times but no Succes, So im going to Try it again this year and See how it Goes........Daniel
Man, that G-90 Sweet Corn I planted is now almost a foot high!!! I sure hope they produce me some corn! Shouldn't be much longer and I'll have to cultivate it and bring the dirt to the stalks!
@231MasseyFerguson ...G-90 is a good variety for Louisiana. When you see the silk at the ends of the ears you'll be harvesting 21-24 days later....Donald
@231MasseyFerguson ...if using a tractor the clearence has a lot to do with that. I usually layby when the corn is about 16-24 inches tall. Again weather plays a big part in that......Donald
@webcajun You are correct anout the tractor and weather. My tractor, which is a '98 Massey Ferguson 231, sits kinda low. It's sort of a "low profile" tractor in a way... It's low points are under the bell housing on the transmission and the drawbar underneath the PTO shaft that's coming out the rear-end. I'll be having to cultivate and "hill" pretty soon...
Hey Donald!! I was wondering If you could Make a video of planting and/raising the seedlings of cantaloupe. I've noticed that you've made a previous video of planting cantaloupe, but you didn't make a video of the plants If they turned out well or if you've harvested them or anything. Thanks....Jordan (girl)
@hiimashley100 ...Hey Jordan (girl) I think the follow up was (maybe) in one of the Field Trips? Will be planting my Cantaloupe in the next few days so I'll try to do another this season.....Donald
@webcajun Well, I brought somebody with me to the garden today who knows a lot about this stuff... I NOW OFFICAILLY HAVE CORN STALKS AND POTATO PLANTS COMING UP!!! It wasn't weeds after all!!! (((glad I didn't decide to take the hoe to it!!))) Thanks DONALD for your abundance of kindness and inspiration, and I really do mean this.
Well I got the corn re-done! LOL! I took the middlebuster early this morning and busted the corn rows back open once again, but didn't go as deep. Applied 13-13-13, once again, to each row (6 rows, 80 ft. in length each). And once again, placed 2 kernals about every 12 inches apart. And finally, I TOOK THE GARDEN RAKE (LOL instead of the row hippers) and covered the seeds with about 1 or 2 inches of dirt. Didn't water because it's supposed to rain tomorrow and Saturday. Sure hope it grows!!
@webcajun You should SEE the rain we got here in the last 2 days!! The back side of the garden was pretty much flooded, but luckily that side hasn't been planted yet. After seeing all this, I LOVE planting on a row. Not far from my house yesterday (couple miles), a tornado ripped the roof off of some of my kin folks' home and tore up their neighbor's roof also. Nobody was injured Thank God.
@webcajun Well, I don't know if it's corn or grass coming up but I'm definately seeing something! Not sure if i should be happy or concerned. Either way, I'm kinda excited. I wish I could show you a pic or see a pic on the net of corn stalks popping out the ground. 1 is about an inch and a half tall and others are a little smaller. Not sure what it is yet though. Oh, and I also have "cracks" on top of my rows where the crop was planted. Really don't know what the hell to expect! LOL!!
I'm planting corn tomorrow, here in South LA. It's a sweet corn called "G-90". Have you ever messed with it? I know it's delicious, but I've never planted corn in my life. New to gardening! I think we may also plant some "Shoepeg" corn too. I know nothing about all this, but I'm learning tremendously from my elderly kin folks, and your videos. Thank You!
@231MasseyFerguson ...I'm trying Golden Bantam this year but I have a pound of G-90 set aside just in case. G-90 is a very good sweet corn for our area......Donald
@webcajun Well, I got 6 rows planted today that are about 80 ft. long. Remember how I said I was new to gardening? Well I wasn't lying! I planted the corn (G-90) 2 kernels, about every 12 inches apart, about 9 inches deep!!!! I'm VERY disgusted. I have cursed and raised hell all evening. We're supposed to be "re-doing" it tomorrow. I made the furrow with the middlebuster, but when I covered it with the row hippers I didn't realize that the seeds were so deep. Anything you could recommend?
@231MasseyFerguson ...After making your furrow cover the seeds about 1 1/2 inches deep using a garden rake. Row hippers throw way too much dirt to cover seeds.....Donald
THANK YOU SIR for sharing your knowledge. At some point we could all be needing to learn how to grow our own food with the way the con men running the country have hollowed out the economy from the inside with their funny money and crony capitalism lending.
@jaydes19 ... an inch of rain a week would be ideal for corn. I don't know of too many vegetables that like wet soil especially standing water for any lenght of time. I try to space my corn at 12 inches..........Donald
I am restoring a 1948 farmall cub to make a smallish garden to support three person family for a year. always did my garden by hand, but cannot do enough to store food long term. what do you recommend I get as first attachments. Cub has hydraulics, and a draw bar hitch snow plaow sickle bar, and belly mower. What sort of implement is best to start with. Gerry
@Gerrymusicteacher ... I think you need to ask someone who has a little more experience with that size tractor. I not sure if a cub would turn a tiller. Around here they are used mostly to draw rows on soil that's already broken up and to cultivate with..........Donald
You are a natural teacher. Thank You for teaching/entertaining us here on YouTube. I have watched a few of your videos and enjoy your common sence. I am in Houston, Texas and maybe some day I will get to use your teachings. God Bless You for your kindness.
@specialks1953 ... I reccomend the first chance you get, move out of the city and to the country. You'll never look back. Glad you enjoy the videos and thank you........Donald
@thetank10000 ... most of the vegetables I plant are on rows with a furrow on top of the row. When watering the furrow keeps the water from running into the middles and allows it to soak down into the row. Corn can also be planting flat, without a row, and dirt brought up to the stalk after the last of the fertilizer is applied......... Donald
@agrotis79 LoL, my nieghbor had trouble keeping his young bull up. Needless to say he reeked havoc on my corn while I wasn't at home. Because of dry conditions once summer arived the squirels were helping themselves as well. I did manage to freeze about 5 gallons cut off the cob.
@green2lean ... with corn I usually just flood the rows until I see seepage on the other side. How often naturally depends on the weather and your soil. Dig down a few inches and check for moisture........ Donald
HI DONALD NICE VIDEO I HAVE WATCH IT MANY TIMES ENJOY IT EVERYTIME I DO WATCH . I LOVE YOUR DOGS. LUCY IS SOMETHING ELSE .I HAVE SEEN ALL YOUR VIDEOS AND LIKE ALL OF THEM I FEEL LIKE WE ARE OLD FRIENDS. KEEP THE VIDEOS COMING. WE ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR YOUR NEXT NEW ONE. THANKS FOR BEING THERE.
@agrotis79 - Buy yourself an coon trap at Home Depot for about $25 or make one yourself. Many Cajuns eat the damn things, with garlic and sweet potatoes.
Hi Donald, It's Jeff here, I've been growing sweet corn for just over 20 yrs, & I've never hilled them. This year I'm going to, after watching this video. It makes sense, they'll grow a set of roots on that next nuckle. Thanks for sharing. cheers from jeff
@mugsyjeff ... Living in Louisiana planting flat is usually not an option when we get heavy rains. That row / hill will hold moisture during those dry spells in summer. Just checked out your videos and subscribed..... Donald
@webcajun Thanks for that Donald & thanks for subscribing. Sweet corn is my favorite vegetable to grow, I love the way the rain water is fed to the roots via the leaves. I've been growing some beans as in dry beans the last couple of years. Pintos, Borlottis & kidneys. There good value, I just pick, shell & freeze. You only need to boil them for about 15 minutes. I'll be growing more of them this year, before the sweet corn. Thanks again Donald. cheers for now.
I learned something watching the video, and was confused when I first running over your garden with the golf cart. I figured it out later and after the tiller was run over it to mix the furtilizer into the soil. This is much easier than what I was use to doing with a horse and plow like we did during the 50's and 60's while growing up.
I'm trying the Electric Fence, Looks like your gardening, is down to a science love the tomato watering idea with the 1.5 pipe. I just planted corn today when it starts growing I have to cover every night. We can get frost until June 1st makes planting early corn a risk with covering risk goes way down, I only planted 3 rows of peaches & cream about 150 stocks. Hopefully I have eatable corn Late June or early July. Most of our corn is planted 2nd week of May. Thanks for the ideas.
Mike From MI here, We have such a coon problem here, we have to plant very large plots just to have some corn. How do you deal with this problem, we removed about 20 coon from Dec to March.
@MandLVideo ... got the same problem with coons here too. Some say put a radio out there playing loud music. I think an electric fence would work as well....... Donald
Excellent videos. Please keep em' coming. When planting just a few acres of corn do I have to rotate their location each year. Have not tried to plant corn but I'm thinking I might try next year.
@sully428 ... if you have the room to rotate your crops I would recommend it. Just about any vegetable that follows corn would do well if you fertilized both in the fall and spring........ Donald
Hey that's 4 sq. feet more than you had before. When you see the silk forming at the tip of the ear, 21-24 days later you should be able to harvest........... Donald
awesome videos. so have you started corn indoors and transplanted? and s crazy as it sounds, watered-down urine makes excellent ferts. have you grown the ""three sisters"" together? that being corn, beans, and squash?
No need to start your corn seed indoors, just plant directly into the garden. No pee in the garden, I'll stick with regular fertilizer. May try the 3 sisters this year if it ever dries up enough to get back in the garden....... Donald
lol People are terrified/disgusted to use watered-down pee as a fert. The reason I was considering starting some corn indoors is because the growing season up here in Nova Scotia can be short here and very unpredictable. I am for sure going to try the three sisters. Lucky you having no problem with maggots in your corn!! Do you use pesticides, doesn't appear you do from the videos I've watched. Guess your climate is hostile to the buggers. Keep up the good work!
Not sure how well corn will take to transplanting. Sweet Corn takes 70-90 days to mature so you should have enough time. When I do use insecticides it's usually Liquid Sevin or some of the homemade stuff. Got plenty bugs, I guess they find something they like better when the corn is growing........ Donald
Wow what fine looking soil. Looks like potting soil. I was lucky and picked up a four row IH 56 planter for $50 bucks with all the plates. Love your videos thank you for posting.
He has that soil worked up very good. That is what it takes to get a good stand of any crop. The IH 56 planters are good machines but like the Webcajun suggest if you could cut it down to a couple 1 row units and keep 2 rows for your own use it will make money. I done that last year to a 4 row IH fast hirch planter. Sold a 2 row unit for a lot more than I gave for the whole thing and still have a 2 row unit for me to use.
I rasie crops for farmers markets. I kind of need 4 rows coming off at a time but I have wondered about cutting it down to two rows and making it three point mounted planter to make it easier to haul up and down the road. Also for starting in the middle of the field for the next crop of sweet corn. I plant corn from mid April to mid July. I have the same tiller as Donald but my ground never works up that well. It works up nice but not as fine as Donalds.
I always plant at least 4 rows at a time but use 2 row planters because they are so much easier to move. Just make a whole round for 4 rows. I usually plant around 100 acres of field corn and 2 to 3 acres of sweet corn and green beans with mine. I have a 2 row rear mount and a 2 row front mount planter on one tractor. One is set up for beans and the other for corn. Of course I change plates and plant several other veggies with them now and then too.
I am having real trouble finding a small row hipper (if that is what they are called) to fit my small Yanmar 1500D. If anyone is in Australia and they can suggest somewhere I can get such a device I would really like to know.
During a rainy season, planting on rows keeps young plants out of standing water. During a dry period, the soil stays moist a lot longer under those rows........ Donald
my friend used to have password to this channel so he made the viid ...jacob sorry about askoing for extra seed if u have any i didnt mean to sound like a bum... ps u really inspire me to keep my garden up andd going!!
wh is that dryving why dont u ever show ur wife will u show ur wife i sat down and watched all ur vids today i love gadening i am only 12 but i know alot about gardening one day i will make a vid and post of my garden. one thing is im really short on seed so could u send me seed if you ever have extra .... jacob ps plz respond thanks....
Great videos! Have you ever used any natural fertelizer, such as dead fish or maneur? We have a local fish market that probably produces 35-40 gallons of unusable fish parts (heads, guts, etc) and thought about tilling that up in my small garden, as they are more than willing to have me take it off their hands. Keep up the good work! -Chris
Never used any natural fertilizer. Tilling up fish parts in your garden, wouldn't that have every cat in the neighborhood hanging around?....... Donald
I love your videos! Even though I am from Australia, you give so much information that I can apply to my little garden. Thankyou for taking the time to shoot and upload your great videos. You are the essence of great vegetable gardeners.
EMERGENCY!!! The godless crows have attacked my sweet corn!! I have strung VCR tape across my garden, and will monitor it's affectiveness, but I would LOVE to hear everyone elses suggestions, short of hiring Mr. Hainey's crow watchin' service.
My corn started Shoostin' and the crows started boostin"
Yes the 50 lbs. covered the area where the corn was planted. Last year she was too small to reach it. I'll have to keep an eye on her this year. LOL ...... Donald
gr8 video. the potatoes, corn, and onions are coming right along. have to wait to start my garden due to frost warnings we've had in the Carolinas these past few days. so far, it looks like it will be a good harvest in the months to come.
Sounds like we planted about the same time. This warm weather we are having is really making it grow, I can see a difference everyday. I did notice a few skips yesterday which may have been caused by all the rain. Glad you enjoy the videos. Thanks...... Donald
Started planting my corn in southern Oklahoma about two weeks ago. We also got a good slow rain that we needed very badly. I couldn't wait to get started. We are thankful spring has arrived and are looking forward to another growing season. Thank you for the effort you put into your videos!

Is there a particular reason why you plant your corn in a furrow?
thetank10000 1 year ago
@thetank10000 ... most of the vegetables I plant are on rows with a furrow on top of the row. When watering the furrow keeps the water from running into the middles and allows it to soak down into the row. Corn can also be planting flat, without a row, and dirt brought up to the stalk after the last of the fertilizer is applied......... Donald
webcajun 1 year ago
You should mount the Furrower onto the draw disc.

How do you water your corn and how much water is required?
green2lean 1 year ago
@green2lean ... with corn I usually just flood the rows until I see seepage on the other side. How often naturally depends on the weather and your soil. Dig down a few inches and check for moisture........ Donald

Hi Donald, It's Jeff here, I've been growing sweet corn for just over 20 yrs, & I've never hilled them. This year I'm going to, after watching this video. It makes sense, they'll grow a set of roots on that next nuckle. Thanks for sharing. cheers from jeff
mugsyjeff 1 year ago
@mugsyjeff ... Living in Louisiana planting flat is usually not an option when we get heavy rains. That row / hill will hold moisture during those dry spells in summer. Just checked out your videos and subscribed..... Donald
webcajun 1 year ago

@sully428 ... if you have the room to rotate your crops I would recommend it. Just about any vegetable that follows corn would do well if you fertilized both in the fall and spring........ Donald

awesome videos. so have you started corn indoors and transplanted? and s crazy as it sounds, watered-down urine makes excellent ferts. have you grown the ""three sisters"" together? that being corn, beans, and squash?
nibfu 1 year ago
No need to start your corn seed indoors, just plant directly into the garden. No pee in the garden, I'll stick with regular fertilizer. May try the 3 sisters this year if it ever dries up enough to get back in the garden....... Donald
webcajun 1 year ago
lol People are terrified/disgusted to use watered-down pee as a fert. Keep up the good work!
nibfu 1 year ago
Not sure how well corn will take to transplanting. Sweet Corn takes 70-90 days to mature so you should have enough time. When I do use insecticides it's usually Liquid Sevin or some of the homemade stuff. Got plenty bugs, I guess they find something they like better when the corn is growing........ Donald

Wow what fine looking soil. Looks like potting soil. I was lucky and picked up a four row IH 56 planter for $50 bucks with all the plates. Love your videos thank you for posting.
gizmotwadlebutt 1 year ago
If you can cut that bar and make 4 one row planters you could make a small fortune. I just got my hands on a Covington Planter............ Donald
webcajun 1 year ago
He has that soil worked up very good. That is what it takes to get a good stand of any crop. The IH 56 planters are good machines but like the Webcajun suggest if you could cut it down to a couple 1 row units and keep 2 rows for your own use it will make money. I done that last year to a 4 row IH fast hirch planter. Sold a 2 row unit for a lot more than I gave for the whole thing and still have a 2 row unit for me to use.
georgeky1 1 year ago
I rasie crops for farmers markets. I kind of need 4 rows coming off at a time but I have wondered about cutting it down to two rows and making it three point mounted planter to make it easier to haul up and down the road. Also for starting in the middle of the field for the next crop of sweet corn. I plant corn from mid April to mid July. I have the same tiller as Donald but my ground never works up that well. It works up nice but not as fine as Donalds.
gizmotwadlebutt 1 year ago
I always plant at least 4 rows at a time but use 2 row planters because they are so much easier to move. Just make a whole round for 4 rows. I usually plant around 100 acres of field corn and 2 to 3 acres of sweet corn and green beans with mine. I have a 2 row rear mount and a 2 row front mount planter on one tractor. One is set up for beans and the other for corn. Of course I change plates and plant several other veggies with them now and then too.
georgeky1 1 year ago
That sounds like a nice setup. I wish I could see it to copy.

Hi Donald. Can you explain why it is necesary to hill up rows? What is the benefit over just planting on a tilled flat field?
Hamish121212 2 years ago
During a rainy season, planting on rows keeps young plants out of standing water. During a dry period, the soil stays moist a lot longer under those rows........ Donald

-Chris
