Yes there were other Blacks before the 18th century immigration of Haitians but the point is that Haitians add a different flavor to it and mix all together=Louisiana Creole Culture
Antoine Amadee Peychaud, an apothecary (pharmacist) who created a citrus based tincture called Peychaud's Bitters which is central to the Sazerac cocktail he invented in 1830. They are quite good by the way and if you’re in New Orleans stop by the Sazerac bar in the Fairmont Hotel and try one.
If you have any stories related to New Orleans culture send mail to dudley@callais.net
Haitians played a major role in the development of Creole cuisine, the perpetuation of voodoo practices and preserving the city's French character. Among the most notable Haitians in New Orleans history were; the pirate Jean Lafitte born in Port-au-Prince around 1782. Marie Laveau, the undisputed Queen of Voodoo, born in Santo Domingo in 1794.
The Hatian Creole population settled in the French Quarter and brought a distinct culture and architectural tradition giving New Orleans a reputation as the nation's Creole Capital. They brought with them what was to become the rhythm and soul of New Orleans. The Crescent City would not be what it is today without these contributions.
In 1709 after the Haitian Revolution that ended French rule and gave Haiti its independence 90% of the Hatian refugees settled in New Orleans. The immigration of Haitians, both white and free people of color (gens de couleur libres) brought 2,731 whites, 3,102 free persons of African descent and 3,226 slaves to the city. This one event doubled the population of New Orleans in one year and had an important social and cultural impact on Creole Louisiana that still influences it to this day.
Haitians are the dominant Creole culture of New Orleans. Currently there are 5,000 people of Haitian descent that live in the New Orleans area. The destruction from the earthquake in Haiti is heart-rending especially for those of us from New Orleans. Not only do we have historical ties to Haiti, our experiences from Hurricane Katrina make us empathetic. My sympathies and prayers go out to our Hatian cousins.
For two centuries, Haiti and New Orleans have shared deep cultural and historical ties, dating to when several shiploads of 19th-century Haitian refugees fleeing the Caribbean island's slave revolts relocated to New Orleans, forever stamping their culture on the city.
NEW ORLEANS — From the pots of red beans and rice bubbling in French Quarter restaurants to the amulet bags for sale in neighborhood botanicas, Haitian influence is seen, heard and tasted across this city.
"Our whole culture is steeped in Haiti and steeped in voodoo," says Sallie Ann Glassman, the shop's owner and a leading New Orleans voodoo priestess. "That mix of African slaves and European Catholics — it certainly left its footprint all over."
Another thing the Saint-Domingue refugees brought to New Orleans: voodoo. At the Island of Salvation Botanica on Piety Street, rows of candles with images of Ayizan, Loko and other voodoo deities sit next to ritual perfumes and gris-gris bags — small cloth bags filled with herbs, oils and other items used to cast spells. Dried chicken feet bedecked with colored feathers (to repel thieves) dangle from nails.
A lot of the things about New Orleans we view as unique came from those Haitian refugees," Clark says.
Over the years, the Haitian riz national morphed into red beans and rice — a New Orleans staple — and the city's brightly colored Creole cottages are direct descendents of similar homes found in Haiti, Elie says.
French colonists from Saint-Domingue — later renamed Haiti — had traveled to New Orleans since the early 1700s, says Emily Clark, an associate professor of history at Tulane University. That connection flourished in 1809 and 1810, when 10,000 refugees arrived in New Orleans from Saint-Domingue, she says. The refugees were a combination of French colonists, their slaves and free people of color who had fled the slave uprisings.
Furthermore, I study Anthropology as well as Philosophy at the University of Toronto, and in theory and actuality "Creole" may pertain to not only a breed of people but their language as well. There are Louisiana Creole, as well as Nova Scotian Canadian Creole, as well as Haitian, and several others. Virtually anywhere colonialism's hands reached and touched, spawned a certain variation of Creole. In saying this many of you are right. Creoles did not always exist, they had to be created.
In 1590, Father J. D'Acosta decided that the mixed breeds born in the New World were neither European, African, or Aboriginal Natives, but various mixtures of all three, thus a created race. And in being so he created the term "Creole" to tittle those created in the New World; The Americas. "Creole" which comes from the Spanish word "criollo",is derivative from the Latin word “crear”, which meant “create". These races were later enriched by Arabs as well as Chinese traders. FYI. kthxbai.
@MariAnnaWays I am creole Haitian and malato those are my races my father from Haiti mother is creole and malato grandmother creole and grandfather malato im saying this to correct u creole is a race also...as well as a culture but creole should be recognized as as much as a race as mexican or chinese if you are to overlook strong mixture races like creole and malato ppl like me would not have any race at all
@Beyoncefan1000 ooh im sooo sorry for speaking the truth about this woman..first of all i dont fear no man but God Himself..secondly, last time ive heard this is a free country with freedom of speech therefore i have the right to voice my opinion..if i dont like her then I DONT LIKE HER..it aint your business..so thirdly why wont you "back the hell up got it" as you would say it right..talking about i aint got the right to talk about her like that PLEASE...

why would i be Jealous? im actually just as creole as she is if not more.only one of her parents is both of mine are. my family still speaks creole you don't hear us putting down other blacks. i just think this is stupid, God made us all in his image. we're the same
This is the most ignorant song i've ever heard. first Beyonce i
s black. the same as anyother light skin black person. she wears a weave. her hair texture isn't tht different. for EVERY creole who thinks their special get a life. if you were smart you would say you're black. being black is much better than trying to be some obscure made up race
@dudewaitewhat fuck u with ur bullshit ok, there are some haitians that aint fucking black, ignorant ass bitch learn some shit before u start posting shit ok. im haitian i aint fucking black, my race is haitian, my skin is black im a haitian, get the fucking difference, some of ya'll african american bitches think ya'll is some shit but ya'll not, n thats why i dnt associate myself with most of ya'll, minus the real ones tho, cuz there are some african american real ass chicks
@dudewaitewhat you're just jealous because you aren't creole!! Creoles are the most exotic beautiful looking people!! if you don't believe me then go to those Creole sections of Louisiana!!
@Beyoncefan1000 tghank yooh being creole is the best thing you could ever bee and i know cause my family is creole and they are the craziest people you could ever know the love to speak their minds
@ycmla My Dad is dark skinned and my mother has Tina knowles skin tone but i realized that when a yellow-bone woman is happy then the whole world is happy (if you know what i mean) lolz!! don't let the light skin fool you is what my mom says lolz!!
@AnacaonaHaiti American and Hatian creole ARE different. Yes its true the blacks who arrived were from haiti, but when in the US their was alot of mixing with european and native indians. Becuase of that the culture changed, it became richer, etc, with influences from the 3 races. Because of this we are not the same as Haiti.
yep the creoles of Lousiana are decendents of the Haitian Creoles that came over to the US and was responsible for that strong Creole culture in LA. Example the food, voodoo, language spoken. Peole just hate to know that Bey has haitian background. West indians are everywhere and doing big things.
Most of them are of Haitian decendents. Most of the people that want to argue this fact are either ashamed of Haitis current state of poverty or just dont know their own history. See this video link if you want to know the truth.
yall i know what wichbabybat777 im from louisiana and im creole and im a redbone so i love it so stop saying its a bad song cuase you dont want beyonce saying all my BLACK ladies get on the floor so love the song and to anacanahaiti creole and kreyol r not the same ,creole is a mix of CULTURES and NOT ALL LOUISIANA CREOLE PEOPLE R NOT FROM HAITI SO HOW BOUT U SIT YOUR ALL DOWN but im sorry 4 your country haiti love and hope goes to all yall
I try tell people if you beyonce color...then u yellowbone....ppl got it twisted....ta be redbone, u gotta be darker like meaghan good....or keri hilson....but if u look like beyonce or lauren london u yellow.....there are some ppl who r red n yellow....or red n brown....shoot, there r sum ppl depending on what day it is, are all three...gabrielle union and keisha knight r examples of beautiful brown bones.n anotha thang, if u yellow, dat dont mean u caramel.usually medium skinned ppl r caramel.
i find it stupid because no one have debates back in forth about solange being black or mix but they do with beyonce and they have the same parents i once was told you have a drop of black in you you were consider black so beyonce black so stop arguing on the internet if shes black or mix. she still talented and beautiful so who cares
Creole/ being creole is not a nationality, its a cultural identity...Various forms are spoken all over the world, from Louisiane to Ayiti to Gwada to Madinina to Dominique (louisiana, haiti, guadeloupe, martinique, dominica, etc), and they all differ.
Ok first of all creole is a culture, and language. Black people with french heritage or culture are of creole heritage...blacks from louisianna ..there ancestors were brought to the states by the french...black in Canada are creole, Hatians, even africa like the Ivory Coast..french is widely spoken in african...afro americans, dominicas, ricans hatians of afro blood, we are all black, just diffrent culture.
Beyonce is from Houston, like me. If You have family like I do, mostly from....All 4 grandparents from Louisiana .... Creole is most definetely a culture, especially in New Orleans. Where else can you get such great food? Plus, the Haitian language is not CREOLE, BUT KREYOLE
Little witch, you don't even make sense. Creole and Kreyol are the same thing you airhead witch. Creole is not a culture it's both a language and a racial background, if you are of French and African descent whether your skin is dark of light you are creole, BTW, the creole in Louisiana came from the west indies, mostly from Haiti.
people stop fighting Haitian people don't give a fuck about beyonce. if she a creole is that a problem? i'm creole and I'm proud!!! FUCK U BEyonce they fighting for beyonce. nou geb le pense beyonce ap ba nou manger kaka ki sorti nan trou fess li
si mo rapele Creole ain African American pas le meme quichose. Mo famile is Creole De Louisiane. I am Black but my culture Louisiana Creole. It has nothing to do with race. The sad part is my people of color (Blacks) get race and culture totally confused. It shows lack of education. African American cultrue isnt the same as Jamaican, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, ect.. They are Black but have their own culture.
Agreed, I think it's especially in Louisiana, there are a lot of black people that have Louisiana Créole French culture. There it's about culture, not necessarily race.
I don't see what's the real fuss about because Beyonce is black. Her mama black and daddy black so what does that make her? Black!!! Creole isn't a race but a nationality. There black cre'ole's with african blood and the one's that are just white cre'ole. Clearly Beyonce's mom is a black cre'ole and her daddy is black . Both her parents black and she black. Point black. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The damn bitch is "NOT" creole at all. Her mama ain't creole, she's a decendent....if that's the damn case I'm Creole goddamn...lol. Anything that chic says yall believe it. She's a fake, copy cat. Nothing she's done is original. She stated that she was creole, not realizing that people would ask her to prove it, cuz after that incident, she ain't said shit else about creole. Some people give that fake bitch too much credit. - Seriously.
@rappWARTS102 - LOL, I see we have another Beyuckie zombie amonst us...Girl, what's there to be jealous of. If I'm jealous then you're delirious you crazy fucka...lol. Question, would u take an ass kicking for Beyonkie, yes...would she take one for u...hell no, she'll leave your dirty ass on the sidewalk holding her ticket stub, and walk right over your retarded ass....then you'll see she's not really all that. There, I found something better to say. Oh I forgot - BITCH!!! - There...lol
what's so great about Beyonce speaking or being creole, she said a word in creole that she didn't even know or cared to know coz she said her cousins speak creole,a guy had to tell her 1 word and for everybody to start talking about it?whatever ppl,its not like a miracle, the miracle happened already ppl. And by the way,i like it better when my creole is not popular, before i hear tat creole came from americans, like they always try to steal others histories. Please stop the beyonce creole thing...
Ok, I am officially done trying to spread some "Louisiana Truth" around. This will make for an interesting conversation at the Louisiana Creoles meeting that's for sure. I could care less what Beyonce is..I'm just trying to get the Louisiana Creole History facts straight for you all. If she's Haitian Creole, great. If she's LA Creole, great but, they are not the same just know that. That's like saying a Mexican is the same as a Cuban because they both speak Spanish.
@purpleknightmom - Thanks for clarifying that, but Tina Knowles is "OF" creole decent waaaaaaaay down her family blood line. That's why Beyonkie has always maintained that she was better than everyone, but in hindsight her moma, Solange and Beyonkies asses are all Black. Ask the bitch to say something in French and watch her studder or either say "French Fry"...she is such a fake.
Louisiana IS NOT A DESCENT OF HAITI. It was owned by SPAIN and then FRANCE. At least the writer "angrygumbal" was closer to the truth. There was a mass immigration of Haitians to LA. most landed in New Orleans but, Black Creoles had been in Louisiana long before that immigration happened.
pleeze!!!!!!! beyonces Mother is 100% Louisiana creole on her mother and fathers side of the family!!!! Tina is not half Creole, she's full blooded Creole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i don't know who told you that she was half because they lied to you!!!
sak pase nap bouke is a common words for everybody i don't even use that word myself but anyways 'im hatian i speak more then 4 language believe it or not she half haitian not louisiana do some research you guys will see what i'm talking about
you totally right about that but you guys don't listen to her interview how her mother grand parent is hatian let me tell you guys something she mention her all family on her mom side know how to speak creol except her mom & you tell me that's not hatian on top of it i know what i'm talking about it ok i know beyonce halg haitian because i met her 4 time already & i know wyclef jean 7 bill clinton when i said i know them in person tha'ts all i can say believe it or not
family on her mom side know how to speak creol except her mother tina because she feel ashamed to speak the real haitian creol in front of her friends back in 1960's was crazy that's what beyonce said her mom regret not learning creol & she said creol is a beautifull language if she didn't learn it because her mom did'nt learn it from her peoplet before y'all judge search about
yeah you right huknow313 you dnt have to haitian to speak or to b a creol some creol is deferent but it's creol it's like some spanish country they speak a deferent spanish but it's spanish no discrimenation please, sak pase nap boule
CLEARLY some people were misinformed about the creole peoples. you don't have to be haitian, light skinned, or from louisiana to be considered creole, ergo the chrous:
Your a damn lie!!! Her mother is half louisiana creole. Nothing to do with haitians. Beyonce, herself is only 1/4 creole. Again, her mother is only half louisiana creole which is different from haitian creole. Do not mix apples and oranges.
shut up, dude all woman is beautiful in their own way.... so... u guys r wating time arguing. n by the way just cause ur light doesnt mean u r all that.
in reply to your last message about me being stupid no boo boo im not stupid i can do and say what i want my opinion is my own and im intitled to say what i want . it COST you nothing PAY me no mind!
I look better than you are. I wish you would stop being jealous of women who are lighter than you are. Don't y ou think that's petty? You Balck women are so insecure. You always got somethign negative to say about othe Black women> Particularly mixed women or light skinned women. Even the ugly ones you get jealous of??

Africans,Whites were all over the U.S.,so I'm sure creole culture could have been found all over the U.S.
The Spanish and French were not isolated to only New Orleans,so how come a distinctive variety of creole culture not found all over the U.S.?
Not to acknowledge and respect the contribution of Haitians in New Orleans, well it's a shame.
westindianfille 1 year ago
My parents are from Martinique and I have great respect for Haitians.
W.E. Dubois was also part Haitian on his father side,so Haitians deserve some respect.
The Haitian Revolution helped all slave colonies one way or the other.
Cuba,Venezuela are some of the countries who at least give the Haitian people respect for their struggles.
Haitians have been paying the price dearly for that freedom and other Blacks shouldn't be looking down on the Haitian people.

Creole is not a unique race or a race in itself.
It is simply a mixture of Latin cultures mix with Africans.
Latins are: Italians,Spanish,French,portuguese,Romanians etc....
So it's a mixture of all the influences.
I guess the former slave colonies of Britain can create a name for themselves as well.
Yes there were other Blacks before the 18th century immigration of Haitians but the point is that Haitians add a different flavor to it and mix all together=Louisiana Creole Culture

Gee all one have to do is Google Haitian Influence on New Orleans and many articles will come up.
I'm not surprised at the amount of ignorance on here.
Lol Jay Leno had this segment called Jay walking and it shows the level of ignorance in this country funny but sad for such a rich country.

For two centuries, Haiti and New Orleans have shared deep cultural and historical ties, dating to when several shiploads of 19th-century Haitian refugees fleeing the Caribbean island's slave revolts relocated to New Orleans, forever stamping their culture on the city.
westindianfille 1 year ago
NEW ORLEANS — From the pots of red beans and rice bubbling in French Quarter restaurants to the amulet bags for sale in neighborhood botanicas, Haitian influence is seen, heard and tasted across this city.
westindianfille 1 year ago
"Our whole culture is steeped in Haiti and steeped in voodoo," says Sallie Ann Glassman, the shop's owner and a leading New Orleans voodoo priestess. "That mix of African slaves and European Catholics — it certainly left its footprint all over."
westindianfille 1 year ago
Another thing the Saint-Domingue refugees brought to New Orleans: voodoo. At the Island of Salvation Botanica on Piety Street, rows of candles with images of Ayizan, Loko and other voodoo deities sit next to ritual perfumes and gris-gris bags — small cloth bags filled with herbs, oils and other items used to cast spells. Dried chicken feet bedecked with colored feathers (to repel thieves) dangle from nails.
westindianfille 1 year ago
A lot of the things about New Orleans we view as unique came from those Haitian refugees," Clark says.
Over the years, the Haitian riz national morphed into red beans and rice — a New Orleans staple — and the city's brightly colored Creole cottages are direct descendents of similar homes found in Haiti, Elie says.

Influx of Caribbean refugees

Creoles did not always exist, they had to be created.
allantecathey 1 year ago
In 1590, Father J. D'Acosta decided that the mixed breeds born in the New World were neither European, African, or Aboriginal Natives, but various mixtures of all three, thus a created race. And in being so he created the term "Creole" to tittle those created in the New World; The Americas. "Creole" which comes from the Spanish word "criollo",is derivative from the Latin word “crear”, which meant “create". These races were later enriched by Arabs as well as Chinese traders. FYI. kthxbai.

West indians are everywhere and doing big things.
m12980 1 year ago 3
Most of them are of Haitian decendents. Most of the people that want to argue this fact are either ashamed of Haitis current state of poverty or just dont know their own history. See this video link if you want to know the truth.

SKYBALLA06 2 years ago 8
Beyonce is from Houston, like me. If You have family like I do, mostly from....All 4 grandparents from Louisiana .... Creole is most definetely a culture, especially in New Orleans. Where else can you get such great food? Plus, the Haitian language is not CREOLE, BUT KREYOLE
witchbabybat777 2 years ago
Little witch, you don't even make sense. Creole and Kreyol are the same thing you airhead witch. Creole is not a culture it's both a language and a racial background, if you are of French and African descent whether your skin is dark of light you are creole, BTW, the creole in Louisiana came from the west indies, mostly from Haiti.
Now sit down!

si mo rapele Creole ain African American pas le meme quichose.
CreoleMami2007 2 years ago
Agreed, I think it's especially in Louisiana, there are a lot of black people that have Louisiana Créole French culture. There it's about culture, not necessarily race.
Valicore 2 years ago 2
I don't see what's the real fuss about because Beyonce is black. Her mama black and daddy black so what does that make her? Black!!! Creole isn't a race but a nationality. There black cre'ole's with african blood and the one's that are just white cre'ole. Clearly Beyonce's mom is a black cre'ole and her daddy is black . Both her parents black and she black. Point black. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

That's like saying a Mexican is the same as a Cuban because they both speak Spanish.
purpleknightmom 2 years ago 3
