look, i consider myself an atheist. i think i know too much about science to be REALLY convinced that there is a god who knows us and love us. but this song makes me teary whenever i hear it.
Bach borrowed the tune from Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612). It's from his 1601 'Lustgarten, Deutsche Lieder zu vier, fuenf, sechs und acht Stimmen' (Pleasure Garden, German Songs for 4,5,6 & 8 voices) & appears there as a rueful little lovesong of at least 3 verses called 'Mein G'mueth ist mir verwirret' (My mind is confused).
I've read several comments saying that Paul Simon used this melody for "American Tune" (true) but that the actual composer was Bach, which is untrue. What we are hearing is an arrangement by Bach, of a song actually written by Hans Leo Hassler, called "Mein g'mut ist mir verwirret": a love song, not a sacred piece. Hassler died 73 years before Bach was born. If this was clarified earlier, my apologies for mentioning it again. I didn't come across it.
As "O Sacred Head, Now Wounded", this is my mother's all-time favorite piece of music. She has described playing it over and over again on the piano as a little girl, to the point where even her own, devoutly Lutheran mother finally asked her to find something else to play for a while.
I love how people are up in arms about God. Bach wrote this to be a setting for the passion of Christ. Either listen and enjoy it for its qualities, or don't and mindlessly argue about the supposed secular content of St. Matthew's Passion.
@TheMart0043 The melody was originally that of a secular love song, written by Hans Leo Hassler and published in 1601. Bach did indeed rework the tune and make an incredible sacred work of it, but the hymn does in part have secular origins. Time and again I see comments asking people to just "enjoy the music" and not share differing opinions. As You Tube isn't just a "hearing" experience, people DO post comments, and as You Tube isn't a "religious media", secular comments will be made too.
The hymn is based on a long medieval Latin poem, Salve mundi salutare, with stanzas addressing the various parts of Christ's body hanging on the Cross. The last part of the poem, from which the hymn is taken, is addressed to Christ's head, and begins "Salve caput cruentatum." The poem is often attributed to Bernard of Clairvaux , but it first appears in the 14th century. The last part of the poem was translated into German by the prolific Lutheran hymnist Paul Gerhardt

its not that he couldnt fight back or escape. he could if he wanted to.. he could probably command lighting down to strike everyone that was in the process of crucifying him... but if he did that, then his purpose would not have been fulfilled...
1.When you see how fleeting is life, and how fast youth goes away with it's might and great promises, you start -not believing- , but FEELING that there is something so great and full of majesty inside of you that you cannot explain, but that you are sure it cannot die. You realize we are not meant to live forever in this world that is a beautiful facade, but nothing more than a bitter mirage
2. Then you see why He did not fight back. He said "My Kingdom is not from this world".. What a crazy guy preaches giving life for your enemy, to give everything you have to the one that asks you for it. To "put the other cheek".. We have to look for the truth. Not the "convenient truth", but what the heart tells us in its "defenseless" moments. In the silence of the soul
J'ai passé un magnifique moment en écoutant cette Passion de saint Matthieu. Votre choix d'œuvres d'art parmi le patrimoine occidental des Crucifixions exalte la musique de Bach.
Although "O Sacred Head Sore Wounded" may come closer to the keen suffering in the original German lyrics, the hymn is often rendered "O Sacred Head Now Wounded" or "O Sacred Head Once Wounded" in English-language hymnals, possibly to oblige the line to scan into the meter while also using a word which is undeniably an adverb.
ok, so "O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden " means O sacred head sore wounded" in german......and i guess i can find the events in the book of Matthew in the bible? :-)
'The Passion' is the story of the events leading up to, and the Crucifiction of Jesus. J.S.B's St Matthew Passion is a setting of the two chapters of the Gospel of Matthew that, if you like, 'document' these events. The German name of this word setting often translated to mean "O Sacred head sore wounded", which refers to the crown of thorns placed on Jesus' head before he was crucified.

I love classical music mostly Beethoven but I will say, this is one of my favorites as well the passion of Mathew fits well in this beautiful music and so does Christ the choir is good the words I can't understand but the meaning is the important thing and it was great.
I love music because it states nothing, unlike philosophy, literature, science ..., but this nothing is so powerful and enveloping that makes you believe there is something behind it, something beyond the words that can be expressed only through music. I guess for Bach and many other composers music was a true expression of God - something beyond words, something beyond any kind of statement - positive or negative.
@castorp278 I would reccomend J.w.n. Sullivans book: Beethoven his spiritual development. Sullivan has an interesting take on music but he's rather biased
@castorp278 I agree, but as this melody was borrowed by Bach, and started life as a secular love song, one could also say that "God is there" even when God "isn't" there. This music - in any connotation or setting - moves us, and connects us to that "something beyond words".
@castorp278 To say that this music states nothing is ludicrous. Find a translation of the text in this chorale...it's taken directly from the bible, and a lot is stated in there.
In short, this is a chorale sung by the congregation to say, "I will sin/deny You. Please forgive me Lord. I will rely on You."
If you're referring to the notes themselves, even a particular mode or cadence can suggest sadness or rejoicing.
@cavealieniv Exactly, and when it does convey meaning, meaning is often found between the words, and in the silence that follows when words have ended.
Agreed, but when castorp278 stated that music "states nothing" he did not only mean explicitly but implicitly as well ("it states nothing ... but this nothing is so powerful and enveloping that makes you believe there is something behind it"), which is why cocochanelleke asked if he was joking.
I don't find the choir out of rythm, but it emphasis the vowels absurdly -- oh HAUPT voll BLUT und WUNden voll SCHMERZ und VOLLer HOHN. As if the singers were mechanically imitating a baroque violin, without a clue fo the words they are singing. This is a most dramatic part in the St. Matthew's Passion, but like this all drama goes out of the window.
the choir is definitely not off tempo; have you ever actually played in a band or sang in a choir? it is extremely difficult to keep in time w/ the peeps on the other side of the stage, especially for a choir. beautiful song, beautiful music, good choir.
It's a 1500s protestant hymn. In origin, rythmed like this:
o HAUPT voll BLUT und WUNden
voll SCHMERZ und VOLler HOHN
the CAPTIALS sounding twice as long, tones the same. Somehow, if you sing it like that, it sounds boring. Bach made an improvement with it by making it one of the six times in the Matthew that my eyes start to ooze.
@olympoBR I would like to inform you that what he did Paul Simon was not at all a plagio but a conscious choice to revive this beautiful melody and make it come alive with beautiful words ... he has repeatedly said that he was inspired by the music of Bach, I do not think this is the attitude of those who want to copy a song without giving something more to the listener ... and American Tune is a wonderful piece, do not you think?
@entertainerthe The lyrics of American Tune are amazing...BUT, They should have given the credits of the MUSIC to the real composer....Inspiration doesn't mean to borrow ...simple like this !!! I am a big fan of Simon&Garfunkel but when i heard this piece i got disapointed with the lack of credit in American Tune...anyway, this is an european tune...not american tune...is it true or not ? That is the point !
P.S. I still keep enjoying American Tune...now, much more for the lyrics !
@olympoBR perfectly agree with you, is a European tune, not American ... but, I repeat, Paul Simon has repeatedly given the recognition of this, and above all, apart from the wonderful words of text, must be recognized to Paul the magnitude transform and rearrange a Baroque aria into something as magical ... this at least in my personal opinion. Best wishes
J.S. Bach's music is wonderful, a true gift. This music itself is sacred, regardless of one's religious proclivities. Peace & blessing on all who read this.
i don't think that this has something to do with your religion or...non-religion^^
and about the language...i am german so maybe my opinion is wrong, but it's able to sing with passion in english...dunno if it's the same the other way round^^
Bach was the only reason I persisted in remaining a Christian when I was a child. I grew up, of course, but luckily you don't have to believe the fiction to appreciate the beauty.
I wish I could be athiest myself. I'm sure it would be much easier than believing in what I've never seen. As an athiest I would only believe in what I see, and if I saw it, I'm not even sure that it wouldn't even be enough... Anyway, I completely agree with you about Bach, he really rocks.
It's very humbling to see what God did for us, by sending His Son to earth, to die on the cross for our sins. We complain about our daily stress, or our daily problems, but seeing videos like this about the Passion really puts things into the proper perspective.
jesus debuted 2000 years ago,he doesn't sinner.he was dead for all mankind.I'm glad for the love of the god.I want eternal life in the heaven.bach is one of the greatest music composer in the world,in the music history.I love it,matthew passion.this chorus is very beautiful melody.I read matthew evangelion.jesus christ is not guilty and criminal.jesus was born, this is very good news I have ever heard.jesus
Does anyone know which recording was used in the film Kingdom of Heaven when Saladin beheads Renaud de Chatillon? It sounds similar to this version but it's softer.
01:43-01:48 I can touch this face. and 02:03-02:08 My beloved Michelangelo's interpretation of the Pietà, so beautifully finished, is by far, my favourite piece of sculpture. So exquisitely put together!

@olympoBR I would like to inform you that what he did Paul Simon was not at all a plagio but a conscious choice to revive this beautiful melody and make it come alive with beautiful words ... he has repeatedly said that he was inspired by the music of Bach, I do not think this is the attitude of those who want to copy a song without giving something more to the listener ... and American Tune is a wonderful piece, do not you think?
entertainerthe 1 year ago 4
@entertainerthe The lyrics of American Tune are amazing...BUT, They should have given the credits of the MUSIC to the real composer....Inspiration doesn't mean to borrow ...simple like this !!! I am a big fan of Simon&Garfunkel but when i heard this piece i got disapointed with the lack of credit in American Tune...anyway, this is an european tune...not american tune...is it true or not ? That is the point !
P.S. I still keep enjoying American Tune...now, much more for the lyrics !
olympoBR 7 months ago
@olympoBR perfectly agree with you, is a European tune, not American ... but, I repeat, Paul Simon has repeatedly given the recognition of this, and above all, apart from the wonderful words of text, must be recognized to Paul the magnitude transform and rearrange a Baroque aria into something as magical ... this at least in my personal opinion. Best wishes

@entertainerthe Agreed, except this isn't an aria. for clarification's sake

J.S. Bach's music is wonderful, a true gift. This music itself is sacred, regardless of one's religious proclivities. Peace & blessing on all who read this.

as an agnostic and not german- native- speaker, it's not possible to sing this with passion
PDTchannel 3 years ago
if you say isn't possible to sing this music with passion it's a pity, 'cause the music is not the same without passion.
joseluizcosta 3 years ago 3
i don't think that this has something to do with your religion or...non-religion^^
and about the language...i am german so maybe my opinion is wrong, but it's able to sing with passion in english...dunno if it's the same the other way round^^

@bebert3000
you should be ashamed of yourself for those comments, if you have a heart and mind.
But perhaps that is what Jesus was about, for those who put Blut und Wunden on him.

Bach was the only reason I persisted in remaining a Christian when I was a child. I grew up, of course, but luckily you don't have to believe the fiction to appreciate the beauty.

Lyrics:
Oh head covered with blood and wounds,
full of pain and full of insults!
Oh head, wreathed for mockery
with a crown of thorns!
Oh head, once splendidly adorned
with highest honor and adornment,
but now outrageously abused,
be hailed by me!

Noble countenance,
at which once shrank and cowered
the mightiest of world powers,
how you are spat on!
How pallid you are!
Who has so shamefully reduced
the light of your eyes,
which no other light
can equal, to such a sorry state?

The music is wonderful, as usual for Bach.
But the story is obvious a fairytale. I'm an atheist but Bach rules!
fernaoorphao 3 years ago
I wish I could be athiest myself. I'm sure it would be much easier than believing in what I've never seen. As an athiest I would only believe in what I see, and if I saw it, I'm not even sure that it wouldn't even be enough... Anyway, I completely agree with you about Bach, he really rocks.

yoou confuse materialism with atheism. they are similar, yet not the same.

O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden
Paul Gerhardt, 1656
O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden,
Voll Schmerz und voller Hohn,
O Haupt, zum Spott gebunden
Mit einer Dornenkron',
O Haupt, sonst schön gezieret
Mit höchster Ehr' und Zier,
Jetzt aber höchst schimpfieret:
Gegrüßet sei'st du mir!

It's very humbling to see what God did for us, by sending His Son to earth, to die on the cross for our sins. We complain about our daily stress, or our daily problems, but seeing videos like this about the Passion really puts things into the proper perspective.
Praise God!

People, if you have the chance to go and see st matthew's passion performed live, GO!!
Not only the music is brilliant, the story of Jesus really kicks you in the nuts when you listen to it in the way Bach tells you...
The same happens to me when i whatch mel gibson's passion of the christ, only in his film the music wasn't this good!

Does anyone know which recording was used in the film Kingdom of Heaven when Saladin beheads Renaud de Chatillon? It sounds similar to this version but it's softer.
