  • look, i consider myself an atheist. i think i know too much about science to be REALLY convinced that there is a god who knows us and love us. but this song makes me teary whenever i hear it.

  • Well I mean the most important thing is that Jesus died for our sins.

  • Bach borrowed the tune from Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612). It's from his 1601 'Lustgarten, Deutsche Lieder zu vier, fuenf, sechs und acht Stimmen' (Pleasure Garden, German Songs for 4,5,6 & 8 voices) & appears there as a rueful little lovesong of at least 3 verses called 'Mein G'mueth ist mir verwirret' (My mind is confused).

  • The English version of this is O Sacred Head Now Wounded.

  • I've read several comments saying that Paul Simon used this melody for "American Tune" (true) but that the actual composer was Bach, which is untrue. What we are hearing is an arrangement by Bach, of a song actually written by Hans Leo Hassler, called "Mein g'mut ist mir verwirret": a love song, not a sacred piece. Hassler died 73 years before Bach was born. If this was clarified earlier, my apologies for mentioning it again. I didn't come across it.

  • one of my favorites

  • like the simon and garfunkel version better xd

  • /watch?v=zTZkk66pd1I

  • HAPPY EASTER!!!!!!!!!!

  • As "O Sacred Head, Now Wounded", this is my mother's all-time favorite piece of music. She has described playing it over and over again on the piano as a little girl, to the point where even her own, devoutly Lutheran mother finally asked her to find something else to play for a while.

  • Very Like This

  • rather exaggerated phrasing

  • There 6 dislikes?!? How is it possible to dislike this?

  • @ceadachrua

Perhaps it is because of the rubbish advertisement that precedes this wonderful piece.

  • @cocochanelleke Agreed!

  • what i can only comment is: John 3:16 :')

  • Beautiful! Absolutely beautiful!

  • I love how people are up in arms about God. Bach wrote this to be a setting for the passion of Christ. Either listen and enjoy it for its qualities, or don't and mindlessly argue about the supposed secular content of St. Matthew's Passion.

  • @TheMart0043 The melody was originally that of a secular love song, written by Hans Leo Hassler and published in 1601. Bach did indeed rework the tune and make an incredible sacred work of it, but the hymn does in part have secular origins. Time and again I see comments asking people to just "enjoy the music" and not share differing opinions. As You Tube isn't just a "hearing" experience, people DO post comments, and as You Tube isn't a "religious media", secular comments will be made too.

  • American Tune by Paul Simon is a clear plagio of this song...what a shame !

  • Sir(s): Kuri'ye Eleison, Christ'e Eleison, Kuri'ye Eleison. AMEN and AMEN.

  • The hymn is based on a long medieval Latin poem, Salve mundi salutare, with stanzas addressing the various parts of Christ's body hanging on the Cross. The last part of the poem, from which the hymn is taken, is addressed to Christ's head, and begins "Salve caput cruentatum." The poem is often attributed to Bernard of Clairvaux , but it first appears in the 14th century. The last part of the poem was translated into German by the prolific Lutheran hymnist Paul Gerhardt

  • Do you know the origin of this wonderful hymn? Is it catholic, lutheran, anglican? Thanx...

  • This was a drinking song, it had nothing to do with god....

  • its not that he couldnt fight back or escape. he could if he wanted to.. he could probably command lighting down to strike everyone that was in the process of crucifying him... but if he did that, then his purpose would not have been fulfilled...

  • "O Sacred Head, now Wounded"

  • A god who could not convince, who could not fight back, who was crucified, is no fully human god.

  • @johnhofi What are you saying, that Jesus was not God because he did not fight back, or convinced the Priests or Pilate to not crucify him?

You missed tha whole point. Google John 18 and read that.

  • 1.When you see how fleeting is life, and how fast youth goes away with it's might and great promises, you start -not believing- , but FEELING that there is something so great and full of majesty inside of you that you cannot explain, but that you are sure it cannot die. You realize we are not meant to live forever in this world that is a beautiful facade, but nothing more than a bitter mirage

  • 2. Then you see why He did not fight back. He said "My Kingdom is not from this world".. What a crazy guy preaches giving life for your enemy, to give everything you have to the one that asks you for it. To "put the other cheek".. We have to look for the truth. Not the "convenient truth", but what the heart tells us in its "defenseless" moments. In the silence of the soul

  • 3. He is my Hero, my Love, my Liege, and He has my vote and my allegiance.

    Merci.

  • Although "O Sacred Head Sore Wounded" may come closer to the keen suffering in the original German lyrics, the hymn is often rendered "O Sacred Head Now Wounded" or "O Sacred Head Once Wounded" in English-language hymnals, possibly to oblige the line to scan into the meter while also using a word which is undeniably an adverb.

  • This is surely one of the most beautiful melodies ever written.

The melody is also the basis for Paul Simon's song "American Tune".

  • @tadb65 You're right

  • ok, so "O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden " means O sacred head sore wounded" in german......and i guess i can find the events in the book of Matthew in the bible? :-)

  • 'The Passion' is the story of the events leading up to, and the Crucifiction of Jesus. J.S.B's St Matthew Passion is a setting of the two chapters of the Gospel of Matthew that, if you like, 'document' these events. The German name of this word setting often translated to mean "O Sacred head sore wounded", which refers to the crown of thorns placed on Jesus' head before he was crucified.

Full title of this chorale: J. S. Bach Matthäuspassion, BWV 244: No 54 Choral: O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden

  • Can someone tell me why this video is made up of pictures of Jesus? What does this have to do with the song? :-)

  • Komische Wellung.

    Also nochmal: Pfui der "Interpretation".

Stimmt, hingeworfene Kurzkommentare können ireführend sein.

  • Rhythmus bzw.

  • I love classical music mostly Beethoven but I will say, this is one of my favorites as well the passion of Mathew fits well in this beautiful music and so does Christ the choir is good the words I can't understand but the meaning is the important thing and it was great.

  • I love music because it states nothing, unlike philosophy, literature, science ..., but this nothing is so powerful and enveloping that makes you believe there is something behind it, something beyond the words that can be expressed only through music. I guess for Bach and many other composers music was a true expression of God - something beyond words, something beyond any kind of statement - positive or negative.

  • @castorp278 music is like conversing with God. They say that the world was formed in music. That would explain it's power! It's divine, truly.

  • @castorp278 I would reccomend J.w.n. Sullivans book: Beethoven his spiritual development. Sullivan has an interesting take on music but he's rather biased

  • @castorp278 >> would you please stop puting god everywhere !?

  • I am not putting God everywhere, I was talking here only about music.

  • @castorp278 I agree, but as this melody was borrowed by Bach, and started life as a secular love song, one could also say that "God is there" even when God "isn't" there. This music - in any connotation or setting - moves us, and connects us to that "something beyond words".

  • @castorp278 To say that this music states nothing is ludicrous. Find a translation of the text in this chorale...it's taken directly from the bible, and a lot is stated in there.

In short, this is a chorale sung by the congregation to say, "I will sin/deny You. Please forgive me Lord. I will rely on You."

If you're referring to the notes themselves, even a particular mode or cadence can suggest sadness or rejoicing.

  • @castorp278

    Music states nothing?

    You must be joking.

    Coco

  • Music states nothing?

    You must be joking.

  • @cocochanelleke music states nothing. No linguistic or semantic logic is needed. Music is telepathy. It goes right to the brain, unfettered.

  • @thebloads

Language isn't necessary for there to be meaning.

  • @cavealieniv Exactly, and when it does convey meaning, meaning is often found between the words, and in the silence that follows when words have ended.

  • I don't find the choir out of rythm, but it emphasis the vowels absurdly -- oh HAUPT voll BLUT und WUNden voll SCHMERZ und VOLLer HOHN. As if the singers were mechanically imitating a baroque violin, without a clue fo the words they are singing. This is a most dramatic part in the St. Matthew's Passion, but like this all drama goes out of the window.

  • well... this is actually kinda how we emphasize in German... How would you like the choir to emphasize?

  • Well, listen to a Rilling or Richter recording.... (P.S.: I'm German myself)

  • my favorite chorale, but the interpretation is not baroque. i'm a purist in that sense.

  • the choir is definitely not off tempo; have you ever actually played in a band or sang in a choir? it is extremely difficult to keep in time w/ the peeps on the other side of the stage, especially for a choir. beautiful song, beautiful music, good choir.

  • totally wonderful. No wonder the Starland Vocal Band based their music on this. Good enough to eat. Long live JS Bach.

  • god dead for human.

    he got flesh body.

    it's a miracle.

    and he walks our world.

    music and movie is great

  • If you had only kept the five-syllable pattern!

Frohe Ostern!

  • This is like Easter here in Finland also!!!! THANKS!!!!

  • It's a 1500s protestant hymn. In origin, rythmed like this:

o HAUPT voll BLUT und WUNden

    voll SCHMERZ und VOLler HOHN

the CAPTIALS sounding twice as long, tones the same. Somehow, if you sing it like that, it sounds boring. Bach made an improvement with it by making it one of the six times in the Matthew that my eyes start to ooze.

  • i think it´s a symbol for mary, the virgine. isn´t it?

  • I'd like to know the title and the name of

the artist of the first slide. (a white angel with Christ dressed in red lobe.)

    Beautiful melody!

  • Beautiful melody. Ever and ever again. :)

  • Paul Simon used this melody for "American Tune" :-)

  • he stole this from paul simon!

  • totally dude

  • sure, Bach stole from Paul Simon!

  • not from Paul Simon of course, but from Paul Gerhard (1607-1676).

  • Stealing sounds so bad. Let's call it "revised it" Bach was without a doubt a master composer.

If Bach wouldn't have 'stolen' it, this marvelous piece of music might have been long forgotten.

  • Oh, no...J.S.B. stole this music from Hans Leo Hassler, the original name of this wonderful aria was "Mein Gmüth ist mir verwirret".......

  • @entertainerthe I think saying Bach "arranged", "harmonized", or "borrowed" the melody would be more appropriate.

  • @entertainerthe And Paul Simon copied the harmony to "american tune"...clearly a plagio of this song..what a shame !

  • @olympoBR I would like to inform you that what he did Paul Simon was not at all a plagio but a conscious choice to revive this beautiful melody and make it come alive with beautiful words ... he has repeatedly said that he was inspired by the music of Bach, I do not think this is the attitude of those who want to copy a song without giving something more to the listener ... and American Tune is a wonderful piece, do not you think?

  • @entertainerthe The lyrics of American Tune are amazing...BUT, They should have given the credits of the MUSIC to the real composer....Inspiration doesn't mean to borrow ...simple like this !!! I am a big fan of Simon&Garfunkel but when i heard this piece i got disapointed with the lack of credit in American Tune...anyway, this is an european tune...not american tune...is it true or not ? That is the point !

P.S. I still keep enjoying American Tune...now, much more for the lyrics !

  • @olympoBR perfectly agree with you, is a European tune, not American ... but, I repeat, Paul Simon has repeatedly given the recognition of this, and above all, apart from the wonderful words of text, must be recognized to Paul the magnitude transform and rearrange a Baroque aria into something as magical ... this at least in my personal opinion. Best wishes

  • @entertainerthe Agreed, except this isn't an aria. for clarification's sake

  • J.S. Bach's music is wonderful, a true gift. This music itself is sacred, regardless of one's religious proclivities. Peace & blessing on all who read this.

  • wow!an appointment for some retarded nihilist!

  • beg your pardon?

    greetings from an agnostic.

  • if you are agnostic, you don't need any "pardons"

  • as an agnostic and not german- native- speaker, it's not possible to sing this with passion

  • if you say isn't possible to sing this music with passion it's a pity, 'cause the music is not the same without passion.

  • i don't think that this has something to do with your religion or...non-religion^^

and about the language...i am german so maybe my opinion is wrong, but it's able to sing with passion in english...dunno if it's the same the other way round^^

  • @bebert3000

you should be ashamed of yourself for those comments, if you have a heart and mind.

But perhaps that is what Jesus was about, for those who put Blut und Wunden on him.

  • oh yeah;i deserve to be burned in the public place for my blaspheme!

but which (witch, haha:humour) blaspheme i made?

  • It's so hard to see these paintings but the good news is HE ROSE FROM THE DEAD! Amen!

  • I love this hymnn!

  • brings tears to my eyes time and time again, even though i lost faith thirty-five years ago.

did not lose faith in social values, however.

thanks ever so much for sharing

  • stop the fights, just listen to the music....just listen.....

  • @donvinny44

thank you for saying so! simple words, strong message.

  • Bach was the only reason I persisted in remaining a Christian when I was a child. I grew up, of course, but luckily you don't have to believe the fiction to appreciate the beauty.

  • Lyrics:

Oh head covered with blood and wounds,

full of pain and full of insults!

    Oh head, wreathed for mockery

    with a crown of thorns!

    Oh head, once splendidly adorned

    with highest honor and adornment,

    but now outrageously abused,

    be hailed by me!

  • Noble countenance,

at which once shrank and cowered

    the mightiest of world powers,

    how you are spat on!

    How pallid you are!

    Who has so shamefully reduced

    the light of your eyes,

    which no other light

can equal, to such a sorry state?

  • Soli Deo Gloria.

Absolutely beautiful. I cry every time.

  • I wish I could be athiest myself. I'm sure it would be much easier than believing in what I've never seen. As an athiest I would only believe in what I see, and if I saw it, I'm not even sure that it wouldn't even be enough... Anyway, I completely agree with you about Bach, he really rocks.

  • yoou confuse materialism with atheism. they are similar, yet not the same.

  • Agreed, if you have not heard this live, then RUN to the next performance given where you live...it is extraordinary music.

  • Thank You LadyMask01 for leaving the words in German here..!!!

Today on Good Friday I have read and re read them as I hear the music and voices lifting the spirit higher and higher.

    Danke...!!! Viel Danke...!!!

    Paul Gerhardt, 1656

O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden,

    Voll Schmerz und voller Hohn,

    O Haupt, zum Spott gebunden

    Mit einer Dornenkron',

    O Haupt, sonst schön gezieret

    Mit höchster Ehr' und Zier,

    Jetzt aber höchst schimpfieret:

    Gegrüßet sei'st du mir!

  • It's very humbling to see what God did for us, by sending His Son to earth, to die on the cross for our sins. We complain about our daily stress, or our daily problems, but seeing videos like this about the Passion really puts things into the proper perspective.

    Praise God!

  • It´s very pity that the most people of you are not able to understand these wonderfull text of the lead
