The reason I said air compressor jaws was because I couldn't think of the term at the time. I meant hydraulic. Also, he's not really free to film what he wants; it's a violation of privacy.
Chicago has one of the best fire departments in the country. I've driven past this site thousands of times, that stupid concrete has been there at least back to the mid 60's. I wonder how many lives it has claimed. As far as the driver, he had to have a snoot full. While dangerous this overpass bridge is clearly visible from at least half a mile away. Give me a break.
Not to be rude or anything, but out of respect for the victims, this is completely inappropriate. You should not be filming stuff like that. Also, on the note of fire departments, when they're using the Jaws of Life, it's better to use air compressor Jaws. The spreaders, cutters, etc. work better with air, as demonstrated in this video, because there's more power to it. Sorry if I come off rude, but this is all my opinion.
@1906639 You don't come off as rude, you come off as not knowing what you're talking about. Air compressor Jaws??? There are Hydraulic and Electric extrication tools. Mostly electric used in this video, but you can see some of the hydraulic (traditional) jaws. Are you talking about an air chisel or something? Also....public property, ergo: he's free to film what he wants.
If the patient was indeed DUI, would the safety barrier have made a difference? just another drunk shit head. Probably has no license or insurance, or health insurance for that matter, pay up hard working people of Chicago!!
@justinml Never, never, never monkey with the electrics in a car when there is entrapment. A spark could occur which would or could set off leaking fluids. Live with the horn - after a while as you are working on the scene and you are into the job you don't even notice the horn. Believe me, been there, done that, have the t-shirt.
Though I agree that barrier wasn't highly visible, DUI and high speed were the largest factor. The City likes to spend all of its money on the high visibility tourist areas rather than the low visibility traffic obstructions.
The driver was DUI, would safety changes really help? I agree that they should be implemented but in this case the driver should not have been driving.
I believe it was a great extrication, as a firefighter and EMS provider i believe this situation was handled well.
