But the japanese irezumi did not originate with the japanese mafia but rather was adopted by them.

Irezumi doesnt automatically mean the person wearing it is associated with the yakuza. Yakuza members get irezumi not because of the meaning of the tattoo's but rather to show thier superiors that they can see a difficult task through to the end no matter how long it takes or how painful it may be. It represents the life of the yakuza member. I agree with you that getting a gangster tattoo and not being a gangster amounts to being a poser and could possibly be dangerous.
