if u get in an accident, it is more likely that you will not be able to reach a landline as compared to the likeliness of being unable to speak (cellphone, pocket, need i say more?)
Even my mom who is old school thought about getting rid of her land line. I have never had a land line. I have had a cell phone since I was 17 nohing bad has happened yet where I will need a land line.

On the topic of land lines, they're wholly useless these days. And why would you be in some horrific car crash in your house?! Get the gas mixed up with the brake and go smashing through your garage into the kitchen? I think not.

my family hasn't had a land line for about 5 years but we recently got one because we wanted an alarm system and needed a land line in order to do that but we got the cheapest phone plan we could get and we don't really use the phone unless my parents friends are trying to get in touch with me and don't have my cell number
We canceled our land line because we all have cell phones and wanted to save money, but then no one could ever get ahold of us as we'd have our phones off for work and school and messages wouldn't always go through...so after about a week we got our landline back. Couldn't be without it!

We , in france, pay 30 times more than america for cell phone (i mean communication costs and all) so cell phones calls are so expensive we can't leave our landlines and that sucks. So i was quite surprised... and always was anyway, fucking 10 cents a text message, about i don't know 15 dollars for an hour and a half of phone call, what does it cost you?
yeah, all cell phones have gps and when you call 911 they're able to locate you. Also since you're using signal from cell towers they can triangulate your location with even more accuracy if needed.
iPad: No camera on a device that falls in between an iPod and an iMac Air... I'm thinking the lack of a camera is going to be a significant hurdle to adoption.

Another thing her statement makes no sense. if you have an "accident" where you can no longer speak, it is most likely going to be a stroke. Having a stroke will most of the time render you unable to move atleast one side of your body. Making it diffucutl to use either phone system.

funny and interesting point: if you have a phone plugged in to the wall WITHOUT ANY PAID SERVICE! you can still always dial 911! Those scare tactics they use not only are ridiculous and slightly horrifying to the conciseness, but even more importantly, you don;t need their service to dial 911 anyways, so why are they pretending that you do??!!

The days of landlines are numbered. Also I'm more likely to have an accident away from home & what good would the landline phone at home be for that! Mobile companies can accurately pinpoint the location of one of their customers within a matter of feet & on top of that, they can also tap into the various "Big Brother" mast & security cameras to actually validate your location on their own GPS systems! Oh & phone companies specifically train their "Retention" teams in all sorts of scare tactics!
I think that landlines are helpful, for saving some money and it will not bother you on ur cell if ur at work or at a party.... lol but whatever u all want it fine, but i like the landlines because kids with no phones can use that to call their friends! haha
In Japan no one has land lines any more only businesses. The GPS capability of your cell is better than a landline since it would pin point you no matter WHERE you were. Consider this if you had an accident in the back yard how is the LL going to help you?

well if you're in an accident and can't speak and you don't have a landline, cellphones have built in gps for the police so they know where you are, and also there is such a thing as texting, so if you can't speak then you can just text a friend to have them come help you or something.

The landline would only help you in such an accident if you were actually home. That said, even if you were home it may be that if the accident were bad enough that you couldn't get to your phone. You are much more likely to have your cell phone on you at all times than a land line phone.
On the ipad question, i think it well find it uses, in particular with the rise of using wifi shared access hardrives to store movies and music, people will use it to be able to watch a movie any where in there house ie a portable screen, and as a remote for there entire house, i.e. speakers, tv's, heating, even the power to ceartin objects, systems like this are growing in popularity all the time in the UK, so while yes it isn't as revolutionary as we expect, i think it will find its own niche

iPad looks cool. But like when the iPhone came out, I'm thinking,"I'll wait for a more advanced version to come out." Even though I haven't gotten an iPhone Yet (and maybe never will), a portable tablet laptop square thingie is something I'd definitely use--no question.
Neutral about the land line thing. My family still has one, but we pay the cheapest plan for it since it's rarely used. The scare tactics probably would work on me.
If you want to avoid another trip to the courthouse I'd really strongly recommend against that idea at the end. It was probably a joke, but just in case. All modern cell phones have an emergency mode that is activated when you dial 911 that pretty much does what you said, triangulates using cell towers to tell the dispatcher exactly where you are. I had to use 911 a few months ago, and it works.
Also, if you do it from your iPhone, your GPS will probably kick in as well.

The only thing you need to be safe is one of those inflatable life jackets on airplanes, the ones with a flash light and that extra red tube to blow in in case it doesn't inflate right away. Without that, you will most certainly die.
I have been contemplating cutting off my landline for a long time but I still havent done it yet either! I use my cell phone for everything. I got dooped into an all in one package and if i drop it my bill goes up just like I never dropped it! Damn I am stuck! lol

You asked "what would happen" if you incapacitated Link, and then called 911. Well, I think what would happen is that you guys would get in trouble with the law (Link), and get fined or whatever other legal action they may take. So basically it wouldn't be good for you guys.
Landlines are really not necessary if everyone in the family has a cellphone... as for the iPad, its just a bigger version of an iPhone. If you want a touchscreen computer - that's still a computer - get a HP TouchSmart PC.
Dude if you can't speak but you're like, a house that's about to be flooded, if you call 911 and they're like HELLO but you can't answer, they will track your call, call you back, and if you don't answer they will automatically send out a siren-ing police car/ambulance/fire truck or whatever. All new cell phones have cell tower locating. The only place it doesn't really work very well is in hilly areas. So my questions is how long is it going to take for you to post bail once you make that unnecessary 911 call?

Price was right, everything else was wrong. Just not gonna happen for me.
As for the land line, it's not a bad idea to have one. Landline gives 911 your exact address you are calling from. Cell phones give an approximate location of where you are. Plus, the call won't drop to spite you. :P
On a related side note, if you get your internet connection through the phone company a la DSL, It's actually illegal for them to stop you from dialing out to 911 (not 100% sure on this, but was what I was told) over the DSL phone line. So at least in this case, you can cancel your phone and keep you internet and still have emergency services.
...and receive calls in if you want, but can't make calls out.
2. We still have a land line because it's rolled into a package with Comcast (internet, phone, cable). If we didn't get the 3-in-1 discount we'd be just on cells.

I was getting ready to say guys, every cell phone by law has to have an E911 chip that can be tracked by the local cell tower. A cell phone is no less safe than any other kind of phone. You could argue that it's safer since people generally have their cell phones on them all the time.
When Apple first came out with the iMac it didn't have a disc slot, and its laptop lacked a firewire port. Expect some major tweaks with the next generation if this generates a lot of criticism.
I'm not a fan of Apple's products lately. I admit they had a good idea with the iPod but they are really milking the "multiple devices in one" market. Honestly... the ipod touch, the iphone and the ipad really aren't all that different... just different intended purposes.
I am a apple fanatic, love there products and everything. except this, its dumb. This would be cool if it were a true mac and had flash etc :D then id buy it. But its the same as an iPhone 3GS (which I have) except a big screen and it wont fit it in your pocket. Sorry, this was a fail apple.

You don't need a landline! If more than...60% of the people you talk to use cell phones, there's really no reason. At college, I live by my cellphone. There's no landline in our apartment, it's not necessary.
no thats bull crap. all you have to do is to make sure that in your settings location for 911 is on, besides if the world is really ending, or something awful happened, i'm not sure i'd want to be found.
id say it's nice to have a land line just in case something happens to your cell phone or your service carrier for your cell phone. Not necessarily needed, but definitely a convenience to have.
It seems really cool and I want one but it is WAY over my budget.

I don't know if it's worth it to buy the ipad, but it defiantly seem to be pretty freakin' cool. It seems like it's just something for fun, but wouldn't be very practical.
And the world will not end by cutting off land lines! I've been wanting to do the same thing but they keep telling me I have to keep one for my DSL, which doesn't seem right...

The days of landlines are numbered. Also I'm more likely to have an accident away from home & what good would the landline phone at home be for that! Mobile companies can accurately pinpoint the location of one of their customers within a matter of feet & on top of that, they can also tap into the various "Big Brother" mast & security cameras to actually validate your location on their own GPS systems! Oh & phone companies specifically train their "Retention" teams in all sorts of scare tactics!

I think that landlines are helpful, for saving some money and it will not bother you on ur cell if ur at work or at a party.... lol but whatever u all want it fine, but i like the landlines because kids with no phones can use that to call their friends! haha

In Japan no one has land lines any more only businesses. The GPS capability of your cell is better than a landline since it would pin point you no matter WHERE you were. Consider this if you had an accident in the back yard how is the LL going to help you?
I am waiting for the day I am not chained to mine because we need it to get DSL in here.

My family is thinking about getting rid of our landline, too. Since I have an irrational fear of phones, I feel that this is just fine and dandy.
As for the iPad...... Me, my sister, and my mother all thought the exact same thing when we heard the name. NOT a good name...

well if you're in an accident and can't speak and you don't have a landline, cellphones have built in gps for the police so they know where you are, and also there is such a thing as texting, so if you can't speak then you can just text a friend to have them come help you or something.

The landline would only help you in such an accident if you were actually home. That said, even if you were home it may be that if the accident were bad enough that you couldn't get to your phone. You are much more likely to have your cell phone on you at all times than a land line phone.

On the ipad question, i think it well find it uses, in particular with the rise of using wifi shared access hardrives to store movies and music, people will use it to be able to watch a movie any where in there house ie a portable screen, and as a remote for there entire house, i.e. speakers, tv's, heating, even the power to ceartin objects, systems like this are growing in popularity all the time in the UK, so while yes it isn't as revolutionary as we expect, i think it will find its own niche

i got rid of our landline 2 years ago and they tried to stop me too but i resisted. you just have to keep insisting that you dont want it and they will shut up eventually:) oh and i love it when i call AT&T or comcast about my cable or phone and they say "i see here you dont have a landline with us. can i sign you up for that now for only 19.99 a month??" lmao so annoying. love you guys!

iPad looks cool. But like when the iPhone came out, I'm thinking,"I'll wait for a more advanced version to come out." Even though I haven't gotten an iPhone Yet (and maybe never will), a portable tablet laptop square thingie is something I'd definitely use--no question.
Neutral about the land line thing. My family still has one, but we pay the cheapest plan for it since it's rarely used. The scare tactics probably would work on me.

If you want to avoid another trip to the courthouse I'd really strongly recommend against that idea at the end. It was probably a joke, but just in case. All modern cell phones have an emergency mode that is activated when you dial 911 that pretty much does what you said, triangulates using cell towers to tell the dispatcher exactly where you are. I had to use 911 a few months ago, and it works.
Also, if you do it from your iPhone, your GPS will probably kick in as well.

Dude if you can't speak but you're like, a house that's about to be flooded, if you call 911 and they're like HELLO but you can't answer, they will track your call, call you back, and if you don't answer they will automatically send out a siren-ing police car/ambulance/fire truck or whatever. All new cell phones have cell tower locating. The only place it doesn't really work very well is in hilly areas. So my questions is how long is it going to take for you to post bail once you make that unnecessary 911 call?

I wanted an iPad... up until I found out the specs. I've never owned a Mac before, and figured I'd take the plunge with this assuming it wasn't hella expensive like all the other mac computers...
Price was right, everything else was wrong. Just not gonna happen for me.
As for the land line, it's not a bad idea to have one. Landline gives 911 your exact address you are calling from. Cell phones give an approximate location of where you are. Plus, the call won't drop to spite you. :P

On a related side note, if you get your internet connection through the phone company a la DSL, It's actually illegal for them to stop you from dialing out to 911 (not 100% sure on this, but was what I was told) over the DSL phone line. So at least in this case, you can cancel your phone and keep you internet and still have emergency services.
...and receive calls in if you want, but can't make calls out.

I was getting ready to say guys, every cell phone by law has to have an E911 chip that can be tracked by the local cell tower. A cell phone is no less safe than any other kind of phone. You could argue that it's safer since people generally have their cell phones on them all the time.

When Apple first came out with the iMac it didn't have a disc slot, and its laptop lacked a firewire port. Expect some major tweaks with the next generation if this generates a lot of criticism.

I don't have a particular fear of unspeakable horrors occurring to me, in my life, as a result of my lack o' land line.
I mean, it's cool to have one if you can afford it..
But you can always set your cellphone on your nightstand or sleep with it in your pocket or something.. and I think the same safety net is in place. But that's just my opinion.

You don't need a landline! If more than...60% of the people you talk to use cell phones, there's really no reason. At college, I live by my cellphone. There's no landline in our apartment, it's not necessary.
