Thanks for your interpretation mainman. I am a Fairport fan, attended four or five Cropredy reunion festivals. I'm a Franciscan Tertiary of the anglican communion. I agree in principle with Jesus being the rose to bloom for all to know. However, a church I used to attend had roses carved on the end of each pew and I seem to remember someone telling me that they represent Mary. It was built, around 1650. A way of 'in the know' communicating about Mary in secret/safe from the persecution.
Such a lovely song, steeped in the medieval Catholic peasant sacramental tradition. Be thankful for good thinks BELOW. This is isn't the worst of places, Fallen though it is.
I read an article, maybe even saw a clip where RT himself said it was a sort of parody of their parents admonishments - that even though you were being treated like shit they expected you to be thankful instead of standing up for yourself
"Our Maker" has given us a conscience, free will, and the ability to love. Popes, politicians and ayotollahs don't like that very much. We have to learn to stop being sheep. Kill your oppressors before they kill you.
I agree to certain extent. The christian church and islam has always been a tool used by a few powerful men to control the rest of us and todays politicians do exactly the same but in a more subtle way. It is not Jesus or God that causes poverty, deprivation or war. It is a few evil men that do this from generation to generation. God looks down at his most brilliant creation and weeps.
on the other hand, it could be viewed as the church telling people to just suck it up and be happy they're alive, never mind all the poverty and deprivation and disease and dirt and all that good shit. semper fi. religion sucks.
it's still a great song though. oh yeah, it was written by a muslim ( though not at that time, admittedly, but still)
"In crystal waters I'll be bound", could that possibly refer to the sort of "Water Ordeal", where women accused of witchcraft were tied up and thrown into a lake - if they floated they were witches, and would be burned at the stake, if they drowned they were proclaimed innocent. None of them of course ever floated for fuck's worth.
this song is everyday in my head and heart
why must your religion give pain
the red rose blooms for all
to know

Ah, very interesting.... and, possibly, "our maker", for example, refers to "our maker".... or perhaps I'm just reading too much into it...
