I knew Glen was a studio guitarist for the Byrds, the Beach Boys, the Monkees, etc. Now I can see why - he is really good, even on his pre-dementia tour - still better than most all the current grammy winners. I especially liked this song, Wichita Lineman - still have the vinyl 45.
I had the honor of playing acoustic guitar on the demo track of this song when it was first written by Jimmy Webb back around 1968-69. It always was and still is a great
What a brilliant star! He also played along side John Wayne in "True Grit", doing a great job as the Texas ranger. I watched his TV show when I was a kid!
Awesome probably his best performance i this song I have heard, and His Ghost On The Canvas CD is one of his best also! I agree with Inkey2 Many modern stars could learn a lesson or two from this "Old Man"..who is an inspiration even in his dimmer hours now!
what an absolutely beautiful song,,never heard it before,,i actually think i will listen to this from time to time for the rest of my life.... really touching and melancholic song
"And I need you more than want you and I need you for all time". If you ever climbed a pole in the dead of winter or when the sun was just coming up you can never understand the feeling you get when you provide continuity to a line. Glen Campbell embodies the soul of the lineman of the vision Jimmy Webb must have found in such solemn nobility. Watching the sun rise or set while you dangle from eternities breath such is the bliss a line man feels when the wind dies down and he one with the line
Glen Campbell is one of the greatest performers of all time. This song has haunted me with its solemn beauty since I was child when I heard it for the first time. His performance here is flawless and I feel its such a sad irony that his present illness is robbing this world of a truly wonderful artist. Glen always remember you always embody The Whichta Lineman and your still on the Line, Thank you so much for so many great years of wonderful music. Glen your voice will forever echo in my soul
I never knew Glen Campbell was such an accomplished guitarist. I knew he could strum an acoustic guitar back when he had the 'Sunshine Hour' television show back in the late 60s/early 70s but I never knew he could play lead. What a revelation after all of these years! What a legend! - saved a lot of American lives in Vietnam; helping to keep many of the boys sane while singing his songs, so far away from home.
I'm a brother about to turn 50 this weekend, and I've always kind of dug Glen Campbell, but I never realized what a fuckin awesome guitarist he is, even still today! I did know he did some session work with the Beach Boys....
I can't really add much to the other comments - just wish it hadn't taken me over twenty years to get around to discovering this guy (not to mention Jimmy Webb's other work).
What gets me is that he isn't just going through the motions as some people of his age tend to do; Campbell very obviously loves performing (and I get the impression that he enjoys playing this song), you just have to watch his body-language. And what a voice!
wonderful tune. wonderful artist. my mother and i went through the trials of alzheimers. an insidious affliction. we see the teleprompter to cue the lyrics for glen but when he plays his guitar he needs no direction. he is the only player i know of that got a decent tone out of the lace sensor pickups and ovation guitars. good luck to glen and his family. you rock glen.
@CAPTAINQUINN Well said - there is no way you can put that good a guitar part on a teleprompter. I saw him live recently in Guildford (UK) and he put on a stellar performance.
Glen Cambell is one of the greatest musicians/angels anywhere. He is so beautiful. This song, reminds me of the Matrix somehow, as if someone calling on the wire to all of us! Not to give up hope, we've tapped into the Matrix. And we're going to get you out!
OH MY GOD! WTF! I thought Glen was just a good singer, on his hits and with the Beach Boys....but he absolutely SHREDS IT on the solo, that was just spine-tingling. Even more amazing when you consider how his health is now. What an amazing man. Just WOW. One of the best things I've ever seen because I've loved that song since I was a kid. WOW again :-D
@DannyWhitten I saw him on a PBS show doing this tune and thought the same thing. I realize he's been around and a session player for some of the best as well as his own hits but when I saw him do his solo I though the same thing. Geeezu this guy really can play the ass off his geeetar! lol! I really have a new respect for him I must say.
@Johnnywhamo Been around awhile as a session player, indeed! His session parts took a "back seat" when his solo career took off around '69,or so,w/some solo spots in between.Catch him on his "farewell" tour,if you still can.He is a major celebrity of music, always:)
LMAO!! WOWW!! That was really great!!! WOOHOO!! I'm so glad he played. The older version of this he relied on the over produced backgrounds. This one shows what he can do. Amazing how good his voice still is.
Heard this song on public radio a few weeks back. Luckily I had my iPhone to tag the song title and artist. Only today did I look it up on youtube and remembered how great that song was when I heard it the first time. And found many versions on youtube but this IS the best. I don't look like who you would think would love this song but I do. I am glad that he is still rockin that great sound and I had to applaud that extra guitar strumming in there. Great job Glen.
Having just returned from seeing Glen and his young family perform tonight at St Davids Hall - Cardiff... What can I say... Glen your a legend... Thank You for the Music from the tunes on my Dad's 8 Track in the 70's to the sounds on my iPod today... God Bless You.... Mike :)
Wow, what a great performance!! Glen is such a terrific tallent . Keep in mind that he was well into his seventies here. He is such a outstanding guitar player and singer.
Beautiful: I, Hope Glen emerges from His issues now with some otherworldly Talent of His. He, deserves so much . I believe He, somehow Will ..Believe .
Glen your voice is ageless your guitar playing is inspiring and shows the many years of skill you acquired along the path of your career. This Song will forever haunt my soul and your voice will forever echo in my heart as you embody the soul of the lone lineman working as the Setting sun goes down. Know your music will always brighten the lives of all who love what you gave us though out your career, this song will always remain my favorite. God Bless you Glen know your in my prayers!
Grew up watching his show on Sunday nights, loved him then and now. Saw the interview on the web and it made me sad to think he wont remember who he is, who his wife is or his career. They have to find a cure for this crazy thing that robs people of the knowledge of their lives...Wichita Lineman lives forever in our hearts and minds...love to Glen Campbell!
The man is a hero, and still after all these years makes my heart flutter. My fav song will always be Wichita Lineman, what a love song!! No one can sing it as good as Glen. Handsome still at his age. Love you always. Smitten middleaged lady from Ireland.
It's sad that he has alzheimer's, and won't be long until his career is gone, as his memories will be gone, too. I will remember him for years after he forgets! I tip my hat to ya, Glen! You're a class act!!

Ask almost any songwriter, this is a consensus one of the greatest songs ever written.
