It would be nice in key of C... Mine from Chuck is a Eflat minor scale "Egyptian" flute. I love it. I would actually like to have a higher one because I play this and other flutes at a local drum circle (they have to play the drums quieter) that I help facilitate and would like a higher key one in this scale so it could be heard above the drums. Would really like to have one with this scale of this type..Let me know if you decide to make more of these flutes, OK? C
Great job on that flute. Are you making them to sell now? It has been several years since you made that one. If you are I would like to hear from you. I have one of Chuck's of Bountiful Earth near Daytona Bch, Fl and it is stellar. Would like another with this scale. C
@keyccrazy...Hello and thank you for the comment. Unfortunately, I still have not made any more of these style flutes. I know Chuck's work and I agree. He does make a stellar flute. This flute in the key of C would be really nice as well. If I get into making more of them, I'll keep you in mind.
@KristenVastQuest Thank you for your comment. :) Unfortunately, I'm not currently filling flute orders. I may start back up again at some point, but at the moment, I can't allocate the time to it. If and when that time comes, I will make an effort to contact you regarding it. Namaste, Kristen.
Nice sounding flute, nice technique. I make simple flutes of elderberry. I use a kind of pentatonic middle eastern-sounding scale, I like to imagine that it sounds like ancient Greek music. My flutes don't project like that, You inspire me to get a plains flute!
how can i find artists so i can buy cds or sumthing.. cz im looking for Middle eastern and Native American songs ... Cz i have a project n i need to have sum of these materials ...

@DNAblues - Thank you. If you want an excellent source for flute making, I highly recommend joining the NativeFluteWoodWorking group at Yahoo. I, and many others, use the group to share photos, calculations, insight, etc. and they're all a great bunch of people. Over 3500 members and still growing.
is it possible to make a flute which sounds like that, but with the Western Concert Flute fingering system. so it will be possible to play chromatically, and with a larger diapason like a regular flute?
This scale can be built into a sideblown embouchure-style flute and the hole placement will basically be the same, but if someone out there with some Western Concert Flute knowledge could help answer this question for 'goingtobe', we would be most grateful. Thanks!
That is a magnificent piece! Sounds like you really know what you were doing. I am a NA flute maker myself, and for a while wanted to create middle eastern scale flute. Unfortunatelly there is not much info on the middle eastern scale on the web. If it is not much to ask, can you share some info on it. Thanks.
@416995 -- Thank you for your question. No, this is not a Nay. A Nay has an open top, which the player blows over, similar to, but not exactly like blowing over a bottle top. The Nay scale is also different. This is simply a Native flute that has holes in it designed to play a different scale. The fipple design and tied on fetish (or bird) is the same as the Native flute. Other scales can be designed into these flutes as well.
@JaiMaJames -- I've only made two of these so far and I have folks who are lined up for them, but there's no telling when I'll be making more. Thankfully, there are other makers out there that are making them as well. I know Chuck Theroux makes some and he can be reached at his BountifulEarth website.
@JaiMaJames -- Yes, I've actually played one. A friend of mine picked one up from Ebay. What a great instrument! Wears out my cheek muscles when I play it, but what a beautiful sound.
@yeshesdevi - Thank you! There are 7 holes on this flute. The 7th hole is the octave note. The number of holes will differ depending on the scale used on the flute.
Hi, thanx for sharing this video. Really like it, the scale, the way of playing. thank you. Not so long ago i tried to play arabian style on a loveflute too. Maybe you like it. I called it anasazi thoughts on a loveflute.
Very nice effort. I've been listening to several flutes tuned to "arabic" or "middle eastern" scales; this is the first I've seen of a NAF done so; subsequently found the Stellar NAF makers who have done something similar, although not sure the scale is the same as yours; i'm always impressed with craftsmen and women who can make something so tangible with the potential to create even more beauty in the world; i hope you continue your woodworking with flutes and whatever else you do
Hi... I LOVE N.A. Flutes and want to learn how to make my own. So where is a good place to start to learn how to make these flutes? I subscribed to you because i think your really cool.
Thanks Scotty! That's great to hear! :) The best place I've found to learn how to make the NA style flute is on Yahoo's NativeFluteWoodWorking Group. The people there are very friendly and they really know their stuff! Peace :)
I want to learn the traditional way of making the flute. I don't have access to a lathe to form the flute. So this will have to be the kind where you split the wood and hand carve it. So I will definately check out the site you suggested. Thanks again..
lol cud you do like an entire middle eastern song like i mean make it sound like your in desert sunset can a crazy tune when imma driving lol much appreciated
Nice work! Btw: what kind of wood did you use to make the flute? I used to make NA-style flutes from bamboo, myself.
Congrats on being able to tune your flute to an actual scale and to make the tone sound clearly. My attempts have resulted in breathy tones. Guess it's a matter of making sure the block fits snugly to the flute body.
Thanks! I finished the side-blown and I'm in the midst of making my second one. You can check out Pics of the finished product on my myspace page if you'd like.
I've played a Duduk before and it is a pretty cool instrument! Takes a lot of air to make it work, but the sound is very unique. I like them a lot.
That depends on the type of wood used, the detail, the scale of the flute, etc. I'm never very good at pricing flutes, but I try to keep my prices in the average range of fellow flute makers. But if a flute feels right for a particular person, I may just give it to them, since it was probably meant for them in the first place.
interesting scale...hey you know...as a native flutist wanting to branch out...I've been looking for a native style flute (preferably woodlands but plains ok) in the key of the turkish ney flute...your flute here is very similar to this idea...did you make?
Yes, I've made two of these so far. One right-handed and one left-handed. I agree that the ney scale would be very nice, but I imagine the higher overtones would be difficult to duplicate on a fipple flute. Even so, it would probably sound really good.
Hi and thanks! :) The flute is somewhat of a hybrid, using the Native American style construction along with the notes of the Spanish Gypsy Scale. That's as much as I can tell you on this particular flute. To learn more about the Spanish Gypsy Scale, try a quick Google search.
Interesting to hear a middle eastern scale/mode coming from a Native American style end-blown 'fipple' flute. It sounds great, having a fairly 'reedy' sound, which I think gives it an authentic middle eastern flair...aren't wind instruments in the middle east which play this sort of sound/scale often a reeded instrument? Forgive my lack of familiarity. +++ on you playing and your flute.
Yes, I believe some Middle-eastern flutes are reed instruments, but many are also played by blowing over an embouchure, very similar to a concert flute. I welcome anyone else's comments on this, since I don't have all the answers on the subject.
change the title of the video into "native american flute middle eastern music" becuase this is definately not a mid eastern flute. the mid eastern flute is a NAY flute, i play it, and the native american flute is no match for the Nay..
I believe that there are more flutes from the Middle East than just the Ney/Nay. Wouldn't the Mizmar and Arghul also be considered flutes?
In addition, I certainly wouldn't dismiss the Native American flute as "no match" for the Ney, especially not based on just one example. The Native American flute is a rich, meditative, soulful instrument.
@paledeerwoman I dunno, I'd classify the Mizmar and Arghul with the clarinets. Flutes to me are pure air being blown over an edge, whereas those mentioned above rely on vibrating reeds. And yes, NA flutes are amazing. I've got 5 of them and love 'em to death.
You might find it easier to straighten your fingers a bit. Also, you could also play with your second knuckles. This improves intonation by getting the holes completely covered. I noticed you had a tough time covering some of the holes. Good luck!
It would be nice in key of C... Mine from Chuck is a Eflat minor scale "Egyptian" flute. I love it. YES I'VE HEARD THAT THE dUDUK IS ONE THE MOST
CHALLENGING WIND INSTUMENTS THERE IS!!
CONGRATS ON MAKING AN INTRUMENT THAT HAS SIMULAR
QUALITIES BUT MUCH EASIER ON THE MOUTH, BREATH ETC...
DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD EVER MAKE ANOTHER ONE LIKE THAT FOR SALE...
