I was on the other side of that runway that day parked up next to the fire station! I believe that 744 was a military charter and was on its way back to Auckland to return to normal service. It had been parked up at the Air NZ hangar most of that day for the Engineering base open day and visitors were allowed a tour of the interior. You will notice that the 744 hardly used much runway...i believe it was empty.
hey yeah i went to the open day at the hanger, a great day managed to get into the cockpit of the big 744 was fantastic. Plane just came from Auckland for the open day, went home that sunday night and then did NZ39 to London via Hong Kong. Me and my mate were watching in astonishment in the amount of runway it used lol
