  • Mr Obama was only being courteous to a hereditary head of state.

One could argue that his bow was deeper than those made by his predecessors or other elected heads of states. A bow of acknowledgement from his neck would have sufficed.

Perhaps he was not briefed well enough on protocols by the US Embassy in Tokyo or he was being very appreciative which only adds to the relationship between the two countries.

  • This presenter speaks good Japanese. I am impressed.

  • I love this video and love the way you talk and present your point of view. The cake thing is funny and I agree totally about the politicisation of everything that moves, breaths and stands still....Go man, I love what you do :)

  • You do bow when you are friends with a country and are being polite and not arrogant. I don't think I would feel the same if he were doing it to the "Dear Leader". I don't think he should be respected.

  • I was living in Japan for this controversy too, and I used the Fox news article as a discussion piece in my adult classes. Best responses I got:

    - Obama is bowing so deep out of respect to the emperor's advanced age.

    - Well, Mr. Obama is very tall, you see... and the emperor is very short...

    - Bowing + shaking hands = rookie mistake. But full points for effort!

Article: "One blogger called the act 'treasonous.'"

Student: "One blogger"? Like, one guy on the internet? That's not news, is it?

  • his bow was appropriate. he seeks to win their hearts and minds.

  • 小浜市?

    which prefecture?

  • Do you realize how stupid is the first part of this video? Your entire discussion of Sarah Palin focused on her appearance on Newsweek's cover. Nothing whatsoever about policy. And she's a politician! This is the level to which American political discussion has devolved: Unimportant personal details.

    _________

Today, in the news, the entire discussion of a woman running for governor of South Carolina focused on her religious beliefs. What do such things have to do with policy? What?

  • @bapyou

1-This video is 7 months old.

2-The first part of the video is about Obama.

3-Moron, I was countering her argument -- which was ONLY about looks. I was pointing out her argument was only about looks. NOT policy. I completely agree that it should be about issues.

4-I don't think religion should be as big an issue as it is, but it would be naive and unreasonable to ask all Americans to ignore it. People care about religion. I care about policy.

  • Please don't call me a moron. It's unnecesary. And yes I know the video is seven months old. I was merely stating the obvious about political discourse in America. I do not believe it "naive" to ask people to ignore a politician's religion. Turn back the clock 50 years & you will see that such a thing was unimaginable in public. Only with the rise of religious whacko influence of the 80s did you see a politician's religion become an issue.

  • @bapyou

Yes, unnecessary, but fun & you deserved it. Btw why don't I get an apology when you completely screw up an argument? That's unnecessary too, isn't it. Don't see you admitting your wrong. And you point out no policies either so nyah, nyah, nyah. Let's move on.

Kennedy was elected President about 50 years ago. First Catholic President. You think religion was not an issue back then? LOL. I beg to differ. Religion has always and will always been an issue in America. Too bad, though.

  • "you deserved (being called a moron)" No I didn't. Sarah Palin deserves being called a moron.

" you point out no policies either" The subject was not me, it was political discourse in American media.

"Kennedy... religion was not an issue back then?"

I'm well aware of this. But, in contrast to the present, Kennedy's Catholicism was a momentary issue & the country moved on. Look at Presidents b4 & after JFK (until Reagan). Today religion is a constant mindless harangue.

    Peace.

  • @bapyou

Why so defensive? You wrote something moronic & I called you out on it. I do it too. EVERYONE is a moron at one time or another. But I agree, Palin is a moron & that's MOST of the time she opens her mouth.

If religion was only a momentary issue with Kennedy why aren't there any Catholic presidents before him?

I'm betting religion was always a mindless harangue. But to be honest, I don't know. But since neither of us has provided any real evidence. Let's say we're both morons & move on.

  • "why aren't there any Catholic presidents before him?" Took some time for anyone other than Protestants (America's founders) to create a power base. Old Joe was quite the hustler. Nothing in the past resembles the mindless reigiousity one sees today in American politics. If you're interested, look around YouTube for talks by Barry Goldwater, the political godfather of modern American conservatism. Goldwater loathed the religious crazies infiltrating the Republican party. Absolutely loathed them.

  • Dude. You look like Obama in this video. The ears; the eye-brows. Very weird. Maybe it's the lighting.

  • I have that game! In the game you have 30 seconds to bow to each of the other people playing.

  • nice way to remind us to rate at the end there ;)

  • I definitely agree with your statements Victor.

I've always been of the opinion that Obama was simply showing cultural sensitivity, politeness and respect to the emperor, and he was conservative with his bow to be honest. Nothing about submissiveness or inferiority, really, at the end of the day what makes you more of a douche, being polite or in polite? I wish I could subscribe to you like a thousand times XD

  • you're right man, wtf is the big deal! these guys are just ignorant...

  • Technically we could make a fuss over the cake being racist if it were vanilla too... just sayin.

  • hah this sucks go to camdump, blogspot, com

  • Your site has already been erased, Einstein.

  • right wing and the left are both the same. Wow youre a dumbass

  • Try using correct grammar when addressing another person's lack of intelligence. What you do is akin to a chimp throwing its feces at passersby. You are so frustrated by your inability to communicate.

  • lol what about my grammar? haha what a dumbass

  • There goes the feces. Do you eat it as well?

  • Lol@this faggot still replying to me

  • Of course I am. Your comments help me video slowly inch up in the rankings of YT. Idiots like you are so easy to manipulate.

  • sure

  • @NearlyFreeSpeech - In this case, feeding the troll is profitable.

  • I was wondering what kind of "prep" he was given.

I know that most Japanese don't expect gaijin to bow, but I didn't know if in the case of the Emperor, it would be a must or not.

I guess I just thought strange part of the whole thing was that he shook hands at the same time...it looked a bit odd.The greeting to the empress was much more natural...more of a handshake with a nod.

It reminded me how easy it is to pick up a nod when you are around Japanese people!

  • This is how i was taught to bow in japan by my Japanese grandparents. if there is someone "higher up" than you, you always bow lower than that person. Since the emperor of japan lost the war and he knows that, he would bow lower than Obama. but since Obama shook his hand and bowed at the same time it didn't give the emperor a chance to bow, therefore being disrespectful. but you and your student are regular citizens, Obama is the most powerful person in the world right now.

  • I love how is face is gradually getting bigger behind you.

  • great information, thanks!

  • watch?v=k8KUieycigI

Check this out. Even a huge Japanese rock star is nothing but a small kid in front of the Emperor of Japan.

  • I saw an interesting facebook poll yesterday: Is Sarah Palin a reality TV star, or a serious politician? 60% say reality TV star. I would agree.

  • poll; data of iditos?LOL

  • I would take TV stars more seriously.

  • 登録国が日本になっているがおかしくないか?

  • The customary deep japanese bow

In Chna, Obama also bowed a few times when meeting China's President

I dont know if he bowed to President Lee of South Korea, where bowing is also customary

  • @tenacioustaut stfu. the RAPE of Nanking happened. Just ask the Chinese survivors, or are you going to tell me how Japan did nothing wrong to China and Korea during WWII.

  • What the Pope is to Catholics is as what the Emperor of Japan is to Japanese.

In addition, the history of the Emperor of Japan is 2700 years, although Jesus was born merely 2000 years ago,

The Pope shows respect to the Emperor of Japan.

  • The Emperor of Japan is a divine being.

The Emperor of Japan is a living shrine.

Bush bowed at Japanese shrines as Obama bowed to the Emepror.

Those who criticize Obama do not even know what the Emperor of Japan is. Especially this idiot.

    watch?v=KxWD8gOgQfg&feature=video_response

  • Nobody criticized Bush for bowing to the Pope.

    How strange! Hahaha

  • Sorry for spam, but, as a Japanese in the US, I couldn't stand the Japanese lady's attitude. I wanted her to be serious and responsible. If you were Japanese and talk about Japanese Emperor, you got to keep it in mind that he is the 'symbol' of the state and it is a matter of Japanese 'soul'. Don't take it light. If you were Japanese, be a Japanese. Before you study English, never forget the fact that you are a Japanese and preserve the past and history of Japan. Those are priceless.

  • Truman said that Japan would not surrender by the Potsdam Declaration, but to give Japan a chance would justify the usage of the a-bombs. Truman knew what the Japanese government would accent and would not. Truman could have made Japan surrender, if he HAD WANTED it.

Truman had already deciphered the Japanese telegraphic code by the Potsdam Declaration.

  • I could tell Obama made a bow in a proper way and surely made a good impression on Japanese people. I did feel his humbleness and honesty and I'm a Japanese.

  • $12 trillion is written in figures as

    $ 12,000,000,000,000 ( US foreign debt)

$ 2.1 trillion in foreign reserve for China

    $2,100,000,000,000

  • Obama bows too deep while shaking hands....WRONG!

  • You said it best when you said " the emperor doesn't bow to anyone" that is how BHO should do---- never bow to anyone unless he just wants it up his A@@

  • My body is not flexible enough to do that more-then-90 degree bowing T_T

  • Kinda glad obama won. If mccain won and visited japan and tried to bow he may snap a bone. Go obama!

  • If Sarah Palin was a Democrat she would be touted as the quintessential American Mom

    As for President Obama, meh.

  • maybe the hole is O for Obama?

  • fuck Obama

  • So by analyzing the bow, people are making a big deal of yet a bow is important in certain Cultures. How leaders of the world greet each other is important. It didnt piss me off I just think it was too low and out of line for the President to do.

IF is so aware and culturally sensitive, I would expect he would know how far you bow does mean something.

I know it sounds silly to you but I dont like to see The President of the United States to show such submissiveness to another leader.

  • It's not submission, it's respect.

  • I'm japanese. A bow is just a greeting. its also a simple sign of RESPECT. not submission. your view of this bow, makes me think that you think Japan is of lower status than America.

  • They seem to think that every country is of lower status. It's rather sad.

  • Nearly every president in recent history has bowed to foreign leaders. Even the first president George Washington would customarily bow to white house guests out of a personal preference to not shake hands. If the father of our nation showing submissiveness to every breathing person who set foot in the white house doesn't establish some kind of precedent, I don't know what else does.

  • Dont be so ignorant LOL

Bush bowed to the Dalai Lama

    Bush bowed in Japanese shrines.

the Emperor of Japna is Not a leader; He is a religious leader LOL

  • one, bowing in shrines is different, read up on it i dont want to explain it to you. Two, the Japanese emperor is the head of the shinto religion but he appoint the prime minister of japan. I think that is a little important.

  • lol...I have got to agree with your vid. Some people were making a big deal over someone who is trying to be respectful and culturally sensitive...I have no idea how that makes a country weak. In my opinion, it makes the country look strong as opposed to looking arrogant and "above everyone else."

Lol, people just need to grow up. :)

  • The guy in the barbershop is sexy :P

  • It was almost like watching my white uncle greet my grandparents in spanish. A little awkward and kind of funny, but overall in good intent to respect a different culture. By the way its evident your dog is bilingual, she anticipated the over 90 degree bow for a face lick.

  • I'm taking your advice of closing my eyes and trying to forget you ever existed

but i I'm not sure I can type very wiwell this way

  • trying is better than not trying at all. Yeah, I agree with That Japanese Girl

  • i don't think the bow matters at all, but one conservative pointed out to me why bowing to emperors might be wrong. he said that the USA is not supposed to recognize royalty or monarchy of any kind. the USA is supposed to hold its own and only respect democratic forms of governance.

I don't see a problem with the bow(s) though because it brings peace and respect to most who receive the bow/gesture.

  • Awesome video, I always love your videos, and how you insert Japanese culture and language, along side good blogging, and making it all entertaining! Please keep it up! 5 stars

  • cool key chain

    take care

  • I had a feeling you'd make a video about this, and yeah I agree so much drama over something that shouldn't be drama

  • Hey, thats bow is way way way toooooo much! Her bow looks even funny to me and I'm a native, born and raised, Japanese! Is she serious? or joking? must be joking. That's NOT the proper way...てか、お辞儀、やりすぎ!すげー変なんだけど。ギャグ?

  • Relax! I think she was joking. But who knows.

  • THIS IS SPARTA!!!!!!!!!

Man everyone needs to ignore these wing nuts especially the media. The more attention to them the more they talk.

Obama did what he should have done plain and simple.

These are the people that complain about Hispanics coming in to the U.S. for honest work and trying to learn English but not already knowing it but go buy a house in Mexico (or any other country) and expect everyone to speak English.

  • i agree

  • ah sarah.. if she would just shut her damm yapper, no one would have noticed .

the bow? hell i live in republican country and people here could care less. everyone here is focused on matters much more important...the new twilight movie is coming out

  • Puuundit ( ^-^)

I've wondered if there's such a thing as classes in 'how to bow' in Japan. I'm sure I read somewhere there was a class for OLs on formal bowing.

Difficult thing to get right but surely you'd get kudos for trying...

  • that slap in your forehead was funny.

  • I think it's funny how the kanji on the box is rendered out because it was probably green or blue. lol

  • Yeah i totally agree with you, i was thinking the exact same thing, i couldn't see anything offensive in the bow, and the simple fact is, people are stirring shit more and more nowdays, and eventually somethings gonna have to pass, or it will be hard to see the middle line in the future.

  • Fist pounding should become the official greeting between all national figure heads.

  • I'm impressed and very happy that Obama bowed to the the emperor. I mean, the U.S.'s reputation is better now that Bush is gone, but much of the world still holds a grudge. When Obama bowed, he suggested that not all of us are power crazed, self-obsessed, bloodthirsty bullies. The emporer was hosting him; a gesture of appreciation, goodwill, and respect was more than appropriate.

  • I forgot about the Clinton thing - good point. They really are damned if they do and damned if they don't.

You're not a moron. Stop that!

    *slaps yo hand*

Victor, I'm sure someone else wil congratulate you here for getting a woman to bend over so many times in a video... !! ... but I'M just enjoying the insight into Japanese culture.

  • The following is a conversation aboard Air Force One:

Obama: "So, how should I bow to Emperor Akihito?"

Chief of Protocol: "Imagine that you're picking up a 1 yen coin off the ground."

Obama: "That may work, but...give me something else more memorable."

Chief of Protocol: "Try make believing that you are French kissing a dog at the Emperor's feet."

Obama: "That's it! Now Japan and the other countries will know how low I am willing to go for the United States."

  • lol it should be a strawberry cake ~_^

  • You got a keychain of the long-legged mac daddy of the US

  • Thanks Victor. You see the situation pretty much the same way I do. A whole lot of hype over nothing. But, I was not sure if the Japanese saw it the same way. After all, bowing is a part of Japanese culture but Americans haven't a clue what it is all about. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Right?

  • The world knows america is powerful, we don't have to go around jamming it in there faces by being disrespectful.

  • Besides, there are other legitimate things to complain/talk about with regard to Obama, so if people want to be taken seriously they need to stick with legitimate arguments

  • It could be taken as submissive, but it really doesn't matter at all. It might have mattered if we were in a really unstable environment like medieval times or during the time of samurai, but this has absolutely no bearing on any decision making at all.

In my experience, which is modest at best, the best way you want to look to the Japanese if you want them on your side, and we do, is polite and respectful.

"Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far."

  • sigh, this is why i can't stand republicans. they do not know japanese customs.

  • Not politeness, but protocol. :p

Either way, this is good for the media (and that fox thing that likes to ridicule itself) to both attack and make obama more popular.

I wonder though, if a bow AND a handshake is off limits, then... Naked hula dance is ok? o.O

  • Obama's naked hula is amazing!

  • It's just a greeting.

Its pretty simple, the media will just use anything at all to start discord.

Obama did the right thing to do, the emperor is an important guy that must be treated with respect.

Its just a matter of diplomacy for fucks sake.

  • I was reading about these issues last night & completely agree with your point of view. I also feel Maggies pain, I can't eat chocolate cake either :-[

  • hey victor my japanese teacher who is 80 years old told us on the first day of class that bowing past 90 degrees is disrespectful because your butt would be sticking up and be shown to the person you are bowing to. I found that interesting. She said the deeper the bow the more important the person is also.

  • Your teacher is probably right. I wonder about protocol with Emperors though...

  • People get so upset over nothing. I bow to you, Victor.

  • The American leader must never bow to anyone. Ever. A gracious hand shake while looking the other straight in the eye is all that is required. The core meaning of the bow is a sign of submission to a superior. I choose not to view it as a sign of respect. So will others.

If he were to bow to the Queen of England there would be protesters in the street. Actions have historic meanings especially in diplomacy.

To bend the head, knee, or body, in token of reverence or submission; [1913 Webster]

  • What a egotistical comment. The "American" leader should bow to no one. HA!

Dude, bowing is shown in Japan for respect. A bow NO LONGER stands for submission.

Honestly man get your head out of your ass.

  • It has nothing to do with ego. It has everything to do with keeping the American President on the same level as all of the other leaders in the world. No higher, no lower.

I agree that a bow can be a sign of respect under certain circumstances. But not in the context of interaction between world leaders. Different game altogether.

Small actions have historical consequences. That is why so much planning goes into these kind of events. So there isn't a social mistake for either side.

  • Oh and you can express your opinion without being a dick

  • Yes, you can. But this is SPARTA! Um, I mean YOUTUBE!

Re the bow, I would agree with you if not for 2 things.

    1) The Emperor is NOT a world leader. He's simply a figure head. It's like paying respect to an old retired principal. Or grandad. Or Don Corleone when he retired.

    2) Japan and the USA are NOT in a state of war or aggression. We are allies. This changes nothing.

Question, with all the things going wrong right now in the USA you really think THIS subject was worth any time at all?

  • That was aimed at Atlantarock. I understand that the Emperor is just a figurehead. But I just have to stand by my opinion. When I was young the thinking was that Americans just don't bow to leaders or royalty. Bowing as a social courtesy is different. But bowing in acknowledgment of royalty or leadership was out of the question. The argument went "We defeated the British so we didn't have to bow to kings and queens".

  • The problem is that when a president does it there is no way of knowing whether they are bowing because they are being courteous or submissive. Since the assumption is submission then the best course of action is to just not do it.

In the grand scheme of things does it really matter? Probably not. Is it political to take this opinion? I don't think so. I think it has more to do with protocol than politics.

  • Yeah, it's better to kiss them and hold their hand for an hour. I heard Bush even did a little "reach around" when no one was looking.

  • "The core meaning of the bow is a sign of submission to a superior."

This is not the case in Japan and Obama was IN Japan. Therefore your meaning doesn't apply. "The American leader must never bow to anyone." Give me a fucking break.

"If he were to bow to the Queen of England there would be protesters in the street."

A bow in this context would have a different meaning. A bow in Japan is much more significant than in England. It is equivalent to a handshake. You're just being bloody ignorant.

  • I'm faintly surprised that Obama wasn't criticised for not carrying a gun.

Most empires decay after having achieved some measure of cultural significance. The US seems to have dispensed with that wasteful stage.

It's rather telling that Obama's cultural sensitivity, and plain good manners, is being perceived as a sign of weakness. Doesn't bode well.

  • Presumably you understand that the origin of the handshake is also a form of submission? No, didn't think so.

  • I heard the point of the handshake was to show you were not carrying weapons. Is that submission?

And the ORIGIN of something is irrelevant. Did you know "gay" used to mean happy? See what I mean?

  • There are a few meanings. Submission: humility; meekness; acceptance of authority; obedient conduct.

I'd say that's a fair description of the behavior employed by the medieval knights. It's not much different to bowing and that's the message I was attempting to convey to JimmerSD.

The origin is not irrelevant at all it: provides a cultural reference. When understood, these origins make any language and culture much more interesting and understandable, whether it be East or West.

  • The origin is irrelevant to present day understanding. I think it's personally interesting, though.

  • Dude, good point!

  • Did the same argument rose when he (Obama) kneeled to the king of Saudi-Arabia?

I don't really see that The US has any reason to be hatefull to Japan, it's a great and civiliced country. Besides, the Empreor is the only empreor in the world, that makes him deserve some respect.

I'm not american tho, so it's really none of my buisness..

  • Yes the same argument did arise at that time. To not bowing in not a sign of hate.

  • Much Ado about Nothing.

The same gesture can mean very different things, especially in different cultures/countries. Something which apparently escapes many of those folks crying out about Obama's bow in the USA.

In Germany there are only news reports about the fact that Obama is being criticized in the USA by some of his own people because of the bow, which is puzzling people here.

The mere fact he bowed would never have made news in Germany.

  • Good thing that there is not an Osama-City or Taliban-city in Japan. What a wird criterium for political support

  • You know that Obama, Japan was a city in Japan before Obama was even a glint in his mother's eyes and even before his mother's great, great, great grandmother was a glint in her mother's eye. Right?

  • NOOOOOO. was it really? I thought they named a city after him...That kind of underlines my point does it not. Say you had a Bush-City in Japan. Should people in this city then support George Bush because of a random use of the same sounding word in two different launguages. It does not make much sense now does it

  • Yes, it's ok to bow. I bow to my friends. A 15 degree bow is common. It is a courteous exchange. And it's common for a Japanese to bow lower than 90 degrees to the Emperor, showing submission. But for a head of state to bow that far, it shows submission. Our leader has shown he is submissive to most of the countries of the world. Maybe that's a good thing, I don't know but I grew up thinking the US was a leader, and when our leader grovels with a stack of nukes behind him, it just looks strange

  • Ha!! THIS IS SPARTA!!! ^_^ Kicking people into nearby wells is a great course of action I feel... *chuckle* ^_^ Great video, you're blogs are really interesting [x]

  • My question is this, is there a difference between the President and someone who is actually a subject of the emperor?

    I would think there is.

And because one person is a subject and the other not, why would the bows be expected to be equal. why should the president bow to the same level as a subject of the emperor?

good video, I will have to watch more!

  • Please do more of these blog type videos Victor. I enjoy listening to your well spoken thoughts. You should really consider going into radio sometime, I think you'd have a knack for it.

  • LMFAOOO chocolate flavour...

anyways, wtf I CAN'T believe ppl made a big deal about the bowing, thats so ridiculous! the ignorance is beyond me.

  • I follow the news, both "right" fox and "left" cnn, and haven't really seen anyone pissed off about this. If you are seeing it, it's probably a result of some wacko (and let's face it, their are quite a few wackos on both sides of the fence). Now there may have been a piece on this to go along with some rhetoric about Obama's bow to the shaw of Iran (or whoever that was) but it's pretty obvious bullshit. I have right leanings, mainly fiscally, and I saw nothing wrong with this in any way.

  • Old saying "When in rome you do as the romans do." WTF so obama had respect for the leader of Japan. Obama was in Japan, and therefore should follow the traditions etc of the Country that he is a guest in. He could of been in Saudi, where they make you bow your head and then chop the fucker off.

  • You have Obama hair! :)

  • Wow, so much fuss... I dont think i would be able to live in the US, so much drama (or so it seems)!

  • damned if you do, damned if you don't.

  • Her demonstration was a bad example because she isn't the president of the US. Even bowing to a teacher means bowing to a superior. The emperor is not Obama's superior, he is our superior. No big deal, his advisor messed up. Other world leaders besides Cheney didn't bow.

Obama makes plenty of mistakes that look bad enough, no need to turn non issues like bowing into an issue. He is a terrible economist and he is bumbling around with our military. Who cares how he greets the Emperor?

  • your anaolgy of the teacher in a logical fallacy. Just because bowing to a teacher may be bowing to a superior it dos not imply that all cases of bowing are bowing to a superior... now add that your assuming that you know all cultural contextual analysis's of bowing more then Obama your more educated president... makes me wonder...

  • I'm just saying that this doesn't prove that bowing so low was normal. Her demonstration proved nothing because of its' premise. Not every leader greets the Emperor like that. But like I said, I don't really care. If anything, some White House advisor messed up a little. Obama haters are falling into the same trap that Bush haters fell into. Just because they are terrible presidents doesn't mean that EVERYTHING they do is terrible.

  • Normality is perspective... If you mean the same as other leaders who have sought to export their own greetings... then you are right.. if you mean for Japanese.. you are wrong. The US/ Japanese relations were seen as a little unclear as of late with the new government in Japan. Obama choosing to act like is required in Japanese edicate instead of assuming the Emporer should use American edicate only seems to show your president was using his brain.

  • The only point I was making about that was that a demonstration of how a Japanese person would great a teacher is not necessarily appropriate. I don't wish to argue about something i don't really care about. I don't know if it's submissive to bow that low, I just know that the demonstration didn't show how peers should greet each other. Why was Obama's head lower than the emperor's? At best Obama was being polite. At worst, an advisor of his made a minor mistake.

  • I want Obama cake =]

    I love chocolate

    Americans get touchy about EVERYTHING.

And its not all of them... but a crazy group here and a crazy group there... and in the end it just leads to at least one person pissed off about each thing that ever happens.

Did that make any sense lol

  • Lmao to the sound of "this is Sparta"!

  • we must never show weakness in front of the japanese! xD

  • I would have been extremely surprised if Obama DIDN'T bow.

  • Great video!

What if you have back problems, for bowing??

  • Fox's news said the same thing about Queen... but Obama did not properly bow or nod to the queen if I remember right and he caught flack for that and did a bow to the Saudi king and caught flack..... I think Obama should stick to the Prime ministers much safer. Oh the Queen I am referring to is my Queen the Queen of Canada Elizabeth II of the UK

  • He could have punched the guy and conservatives would say it was not hard enough. Right wing nuts need to go somewhere quiet and retire.

  • The only correct answer would be "assault rifle" ;o)

  • As always, entertaining vid.

  • folks look for reasons to be offended, eh? lol oye

  • News entertainment genius...Obviously a huge effort went into making this Victor and you're got your fingers in a lot of pies but you could EASILY go head to head with SxePhil and Whatthebuck.....Seriously...

    Focus?

  • good video, thanks!

  • Obama is a president who will try to achieve goals by building good relationships, not by fighting wars or try to dominate other countries!

Problems such as the environment and terrorism can only be solved through multilateral cooperation, so Americans have got the right man for the job.

By the way, I think Obama's bow looks so natural, bowing at different degrees to different people and doing some light nods afterwards.

    It's a credit to his inter-cultural ability.

  • I remember when Bush Sr. puked on the Japanese Prime Minister back in 1992.

  • Yeah...

I don't see the big deal either. I thought his bow was respectful, AND he shook his hand too.

    People are idiots.

    Oh and Great video!

  • "one more time so we can get the side view"

  • If I ever meet a person who thinks that it was morally wrong for Obama to bow to the fucking EMPEROR OF JAPAN, rest assured I will set him or her straight. Because it's all just racism, ppl cant stand for an American leader to show respect to anyone. And that's why most of the world hates us, so good job assholes

  • 5 stars Victor! Thank you for showing the video and demonstrating how Japanese people bow - it really put the whole thing into perspective. I gotta say I was a little surprised by the photo but now see it misconstrues the event.

Also, thank you for apologising for using the "r" word. My sister is intellectually disabled and I'd gotten used to people not caring about causing offense. I know most people don't think about it in that way but it still isn't nice to hear.

  • what if you are a fat guy and your belly is in the way so you cannot bow more than 90 degree? ;p

  • Dumbing-down has turned the Internet into a feces flinging fight in the monkey cage.

Fear and anger against Muslims, Islamic lunatics

going on rampages combined with Obama appointing devote Muslims to high positions.

    Distraction, control.

The real issues are record foreclosures which Obama promised to fix when he ran for office, unemployment, the deepening new great depression and the escalating illegal war.

    People bow in Japan.

    Just more distraction.

  • I studied Karate for years so my concern when meeting a Japanese person is that I don't automatically drop into a bow with eyes facing forwards. What's the Japanese for Faux Pas?

  • Really Newsweek is just covering the CSM going digital now? They've been doing it for a year.

  • No. The article is over a year old. Check links.

  • Ah... I've been watching this video in parts between classes.

Based on your video footage, it appears that Obama was doing nothing more than a "Hey buddy, how ya doing?" bow. I for one think that it was a great thing, since it's about time that there is an American leader that is respectful of foreign cultures.

  • Seems everbody is trying to be Sigmund frojd and read too deep into everthing fyi without his rep the guys a nutter. i only read into the hole bowing thing if Obma turned around and bent that way. he probley the most culturely sensetive prestedent they ever had and far passes (shock moment) royal family here in england good god i won't send any over anywere there really bugger it up.

If you go to any country obey there rules it's not submissve it's manners plus starts off a better Repure.

  • I can't stand Fox news.
