Okay so I have a serious question. That move she does on 1:13-1:15 when she straddles the beam. Is that one of the reasons why guys don't do balance beam?
she did a triple twist dismout??? nastia does a 2 1/2, doesnt she? i loved this girl when i was little, and now i love her even more since i understand gymnastics a lot better
Wow the difficulty in that routine would be fairly competitive in today's standards too. And she did that full turn much better than most of the girls today, lol.
@Imaginary114 I don't think so. I think Amanda borden was the last one because she wasn't the most amazing, but she had the most heart. Amanda struggled the most out of the Mag 7 to ensure her spot on the team. But I think that Amy's difficulty came from being so inexperienced. She had competed the least out of all the girls so it was hard for her to be consistent. But non-the-less, Amy was an AMAZING gymnast and truely came into her own as a gymnast after the Olympics.
Not only finished the routine, but did so with attitude, she attacked the rest of the program. That full twisting back was like groundbreaking gymnastics back in 1996
Amy's performance after she hits her eye... then does a standing full on the beam, full twisting flip down to the beam, and then a triple twist dismount... wow... she's good! She's such an amazing gymnasts and I'm so proud of her and glad she went to the Olympics to represent America... she's got guts... and it makes me proud to see her... her Kerri Strug moment.
the gmr gymnastics company(10.0) (type it in on google) has a video of all of the womens competitions from the 97 games optionals to. its only like 20 bucks. im ordering it.
how the hell do you hit your eye? well, the eye is in the middle of the part of her face that hit the beam. The sportscasters could have said "she seems to have injured the area between her zygomatic, maxilla and frontal skull bones" but there probably wasn't enough time.
Fall was pretty much same kinda of fall that Gogean had in 1994, she just seemed to rotate faster in her LOSO - but gogean back then had GORGEOUS extension in her acro series so that's probably why she rotated slower (full extension of the legs in full split).
Alli- It is 100% possible to fall like that on the beam doing what Amy did. I know people who broke their nose doing backhandsprings and lay-outs; if you miss the beam at all; you can fall off like that.
i think its amazong that she could finish that routine after that fall, i remember watchin that in 96, and that was why she became one of my favorite gymnasts
Actually, this vid is more about her resiliency and ability to finish the routine to make the Olympic Games even after taking that fall. Interesting that you seemed to focus on her fall though.
OH MY GOSH ...and no im not talking about the fall. Amy sure had a lot of difficulty in that routine well except for that mount. I wonder why they didnt use her on beam in Atlanta
I think she had so much difficult and so many risky skills that they wanted the more conservative and conventional gymnasts to compete in the team final. That's what Tim Daggett says during his commentary, at least.
I feel so bad for Amy it's remarkable how she finished the routine. I am a 23 yr old female and I love gymnastics. I am glad she made the Olympic team
That is one of the most impressive things I've ever seen.
Finishing a routine after crashing out like that so near the start is hard enough, but pulling off that dismount? Faaarken hell.

I remember that fall! They showed clips of it over and over and over again for the rest of the trials and Olympics.

IIRC that left her with a black eye for a few weeks.

Was she the last to be picked for the Olympic team?
I read in a few news articles that she had the most difficult time during the actual Olympics out of the 7 who made it...

What a trooper, to hit your face on the beam during a back flip and get back up and finish the routine, she's got heart!
