i am a coal miner and yes SOME not all of us make that kind of wage but the reason is you just dont see any old coal miners a coal miner rarely reaches the retirement age if you spread our wage over the span of a normal career you would see that we have worked for a lot less than you think the work is hard and our bodies rarely make it to retirement age i am home now unable to do the simlest tasks i have 4 herniated disks and rhumatoid arthrits as well as the trademark black lung dont forget
@wturner0018 You know miners that make that kind of money today, but only a very select few. You have to be a certified eletrician to make that kind of money in the mines. The fair wage talk goes back to the day when miners made less than $3 a day, and kids picking slate out of coal got 6 cents an hour. And they did not pay you cash money, or a check you could cash. Instead, they paid you with a token that you could use at their company store to buy products that are outdated and high priced.
@WadeHolland I am from Harlan County, Kentucky I know about scripts and fathers making their kids go to work with them. I was comparing this to current coal miners which is totally different. Being from Appalachia I understand that without coal there would be no economy or self supporting people just government aid. The average coal miner makes $23.27/hr from the united states department of labor.
As the wife of miner...I probably shouldn't be watching these while he is working! Brought tears to my eyes! Thanks baby and all those who go to hell every day so we have electricity (and everything else in my case) Love you guys!
big pharma didnt do anything but proudce a drug that has helped many people not there blame people miss use it it is there parents blame to teach right from wrong union union union my dad died 04-11-2001 in a umwa coal mine god bless
the people of Appalachia have benn beatin down by mine operators, the government and maligned and victimized by big city press agencies for well over a hundred years...all we ever wanted to do is live and raise families, and hang on to our heritage, but people saw a resource to make money, coal companies then the govt and lately big pharma is flooding what's left of our communities with oxycodone, and other shit like that..making our young people zombies and ruining a once proud tradition...goto Hell
General Motors blames the Union for their demise. Coal mine owners claim they can't afford more money for wages and benefits. I believe both situations are connected. If you put both in a pot and boiled it down you would end up with a big ol ball of greed. Every man deserves a wage he can live on, not sustain, live. And living means more than an outhouse and foodstamps..and funerals.
Well said and some of those fat ass'ed c.e.o.'s, and engineers who could not draw up cars to compete with others nations got hundreds od thousands or millions a year and the working man got blamed for the failures!...Seems like a crock of crap to me to sell out for cheap wages. They wanted our cars to fail so they'd have reason to let 1.35 a hour workers build your engines in your fords and chevy's!
It's hard to listen to this beautiful song...My brother was killed in the Sandy Fork Coal Mine in Clay County in 1982.I realize you're making a political statement but it was so much more than that for me....
Excellent song I got this on my ipod and enjoy it so much as I travel over the mountain tops were I drive it may not be Harlan County but its close to it. When I put this tune on and listen as I drive through them tall pines its sure makes my day. Keep up the good fight there boys. Much respect for you coal miners.
What was amazing about all of that was he actually thought people from West Virginia were dumb enough to believe that a coal baron like him would actually run ads "for the sake of the kids." I think every Republican he took out ads for in the legislature lost. One even lost to a gay man (representing a very fundamentalist district), if that tells you anything.
Gosh, you know they'd give a West Virginia politician even more than that. And they'd buy both parties at once. And then they'd run a campaign against the Democrats "for the sake of the kids." Which is true, if by "kids," you mean Don Blankenship's money.
