But after all this time and reading about his state of mind in the months leading up to Feb 95 i dont think hes with us anymore.

hard to believe it was 15 years ago on this day that Richey disappeared. yet all these long years later, i am thinking of you, missing you & hoping that you found the peace & happiness that you didn't have before you left. i miss you Richey & wish you were still around, but i understand & sympathize with why you had to leave....

there's so much more i can say about Richey & how i feel about him. i feel so much for him. but sometimes, i get at a loss of words because of the intensity of the emotions behind my feelings for him & the whole situation of him missing, etc.
but i personally believe that he is much happier now than before he left. that brings me some solace.
i hope he's celebrating & feels extra happy on his special day.

i'm so happy that richey was back in the spotlight this year as well. i think that james , nicky and sean did justice to richey's amazing lyrics and made a truly fantastic album. there's just something about richey's lyrics that brings out the best in them.
paul. i agree that Richey was a talented songwriter. he was more of a poet IMO. i know that you didn't mention anything about Kurt Cobain, only about Richey's songwriting, but it made me think of 90's music & the songwriteres of that time. i know Richey admired Kurt & i know a lot of people think that Kurt was the best songwriter of his generation, but IMO, i think Richey was a much better songwriter than Kurt. much better. i don't think Richey got enough credit that he deserved for his lyrics!

I think he's alive. There's no body found, and he has frequently been spotted in de Canarian Islands and when they call him he runs away. I think he wanted to get away from it all and somehow just went to walk around the world. But it'd be great if he came back.
i believe Richey is alive too for the reason you stated and more...i and i agree too that it would be great if he came back, though honestly, for Richey's sake, i think that would be the worst thing for him to do. the press and fans would never stop bothering him if he came back, making it far more worse than it was before he left. so for that reason, i think he should remain where he is and not come back. but he is greatly missed. i'd give just about anything to see him again.

@warriorprince1010, amen to that. i agree 110%. also, i know Richey was a fan of Kurt Cobain & many fans of Kurt in the past, & now, still think Kurt was the best poet of all time. but IMO, Kurt had NOTHING on Richey. when it came to being a truly brilliant, smart , honest & raw writer/poet, Richey's lyrics were much stonger than Kurt's ever was. just my opinion, but i will always stand by it. Richey lyrics were the best & he was a poet in every single aspect. simply put, Richey was a genuis!
I guess that self-harm and depressions are traces of artistic nature most of the time. Richey's eyes are so beautiful...I believe that pain makes eyes so expressive and makes the look sharp as a knife.
I also can relate to richy. I suffer from dapression and self-harm. About 3 days ago I could have said I had not self-harmed in 4 months, but sadly I started again. I am 15 in a few days.

I thought that the artwork on the cover of Journal For Plague Lovers might have been one of the pieces of artwork that perhaps Richey had left behind, but it is in fact from the artist who did the artwork on the cover of The Holy Bible.
Thanks for the tribute. What a shame. The Holy Bible is easily one of the top 15 albums of the past 20 years. Had Richey not bolted on the eve of the US tour, the Manics story would be alot different today.

hello again kamilloquai. yes, i have seen that video. i've watched it several times before, but find it upsetting to watch. altho i really admire Richey's sister since I can only imagine how difficult making that plea must have been for her. I was deeply touched tho at how respectful she was of Richey and his whole situation. saying they'd understand if he couldn't come back, but that they just wanted to know, at the very least, that he was okay. so very loving and yet very heartbreaking :(

kamilloquai. just to clarify, being "declared dead" & being declacred as "presumed dead" is not the same thing. if Richey was "declared dead" that would mean that his body was found, that there was physical proof that he died. But "presumed dead" is without having any actual evidence, & is more of an assumation that he probably is dead by this point. so that's why it still could mean that Rich is alive, coz there was never any physical proof that he died. & yes, i am a big Richey/Manics fan :)

Richey has been declared "legally dead", meaning his body was not found, but that they closed his Missing persons case. but i get what you're sayin, and i know Richey liked Kurt/Nirvana
Fenvox...yes, Richey's family decided to close his case, therefore he is "legally" declared as dead. i'm very sad over this news cuz it feels like there's no hope left in finding him, tho i respect his family's decision. you can read a bit more about it at my main page here at my channel info.

Richey was legally declared dead, it's very very sad. to think of all those years that his family held onto hope and kept his case open for a longer period of time than what is standard (which is 7 years after a person goes missing) so i can only imagine how difficult it had to be for Richey's family to declare him dead. but i hope, at least, it brings them some sense of closure or peace. still so sad :(

@saraj12. yes, it is quite possible Richey killed himself, but studies have shown that people who self harm actually do it to avoid suicide. it's like a release of internal pain, rather than wanting to end it all.
asdffd. are you asking what happened to Richey before he went missing or afterwards? yes, it is possible he is still alive, though a lot of people think he's dead. some believe he killed himself, others don't but think maybe he died another way. then again, lots of people think he is out there somewhere. anything is possible. but there is no concrete evidence as to what exactly happened to Richey after he disappeared.
I remember reading a quote somebody said about Syd Barett that he looked like he had the beauty of a poet from the 1800s. I think Mr Edward had the same look. Fantastic video. Very moving and well made.

To me, I always thought of Richey as wanting to be more of a poet over a "rockstar". Well, Richey was a poet, a lyrical genuis. I'm just not sure he could handle, or really wanted to be a "rockstar". Maybe in the beginning, but he seemed to want to depart from that the longer he was in the Manics. Just a therory.
I agree. I mean, it's not Richey (as well for Ian\Jim\Layne\etc) who wanted to be a rockstar, maybe. But surely, everyone calls him a rockstar for his madness, for his missing, for his anorexia, MORE than for his music and his creativity. Why must everyone consider him a great artist just because he disappeared, and not for writing\playing 3 great rock albums with Manics?
I really don't know how to answer that, except that sometimes people's pain, like Richey's anorexia & him disappearing somehow gets glorified. You see it in the media about all sorts of people all the time. Plus maybe people focus on Richey's problems over his music since his problems came to a head during the time we were last left with him. I personally don't see that defining him as a person, he was SO much more than his problems - a very beautiful, smart, well spoken & talented man, 4ever!<3
No one knows if Richey died, but he lived a life of amazing emotional and psychological intensity, I hope he drank his fill of life while he had it, from great sadness to joy.

A very under rated Manics song, there is lovely version on the 10" B sides of a single from holy bible but I can't remember which one.
Richie was a fantastic song writer but considering in a short space of time they did songs called "Suicide is painless" (well it was actually called theme from mash) "Spectators of Suicide" and the excellent "Suicide Ally" it does suggest someone had it on his mind.
For me the Manics died when Richie vanished, their later work is poor.

I believe Richey was the kind of person who was simply born unhappy.
It's so unfair how some people can be happy and others - who are in the exact same (or even better) situation - can't.
I hope whatever happened to him, made him happier or a little less unhappy.

I think he's alive. There's no body found, and he has frequently been spotted in de Canarian Islands and when they call him he runs away. I think he wanted to get away from it all and somehow just went to walk around the world. But it'd be great if he came back.

i believe Richey is alive too for the reason you stated and more...i and i agree too that it would be great if he came back, though honestly, for Richey's sake, i think that would be the worst thing for him to do. the press and fans would never stop bothering him if he came back, making it far more worse than it was before he left. so for that reason, i think he should remain where he is and not come back. but he is greatly missed. i'd give just about anything to see him again.

I usually argue with others when I'm responding to music and posted vids/music, but I'm with you there misstooper99...I totally believe he's alive especially with the evidence he left behind if you're aware of it all.
I'm driving 6 hours tomorrow to Minneapolis from Omaha, NE to see MSP! Have they ever even been to the USA? Despite their supposed tour the day after Richeys dissappearance???

@warriorprince1010, amen to that. i agree 110%. also, i know Richey was a fan of Kurt Cobain & many fans of Kurt in the past, & now, still think Kurt was the best poet of all time. but IMO, Kurt had NOTHING on Richey. when it came to being a truly brilliant, smart , honest & raw writer/poet, Richey's lyrics were much stonger than Kurt's ever was. just my opinion, but i will always stand by it. Richey lyrics were the best & he was a poet in every single aspect. simply put, Richey was a genuis!

I guess that self-harm and depressions are traces of artistic nature most of the time. Richey's eyes are so beautiful...I believe that pain makes eyes so expressive and makes the look sharp as a knife.

I also can relate to richy. I suffer from dapression and self-harm. About 3 days ago I could have said I had not self-harmed in 4 months, but sadly I started again. I am 15 in a few days.

no probs!!!i can relate to richey's situation,as have suffered long term depression,and used to burn/cut myself,but nowhere near as bad as richey did!!!thankfully stopped doing it now,but will always suffer with depression,i think?peace and good luck to you and everyone else!!!

hi again race, i too relate with Richey in similar ways in what you have gone through personally as you posted here, like the depression & history of SI. i'm glad to know you have stopped hurting yourself, good for you! it's been a couple years since i last self injured. IMO, i feel SI is something that is only a short term temporary relief, but it never truly fixes the problems on the inside that makes people SI in the first place. thanx 4 the well wishes to me. peace & good luck to you too! =)

Got my 2 CD Deluxe SIGNED Special Edition of Journal For Plague Lovers yesterday, (Sat.16th) over the moon!
The booklet containing Richey's original lyrics and artwork is just amazing, i think it's really good of the band to share this with the fans, it really means a lot in my opinion.

I thought that the artwork on the cover of Journal For Plague Lovers might have been one of the pieces of artwork that perhaps Richey had left behind, but it is in fact from the artist who did the artwork on the cover of The Holy Bible.

Thanks for the tribute. What a shame. The Holy Bible is easily one of the top 15 albums of the past 20 years. Had Richey not bolted on the eve of the US tour, the Manics story would be alot different today.

Does anyone know why the Documentary The Vanishing Of Richey Manic is still currently unavailable on Youtube? i've watched it a few times in the past on Youtube. Missed it when it was aired on tv and also missed The Manic Street Preachers Close Up Documentary when that was aired on tv. Wish i could have recorded them both. DAMN !!!!

hello again kamilloquai. yes, i have seen that video. i've watched it several times before, but find it upsetting to watch. altho i really admire Richey's sister since I can only imagine how difficult making that plea must have been for her. I was deeply touched tho at how respectful she was of Richey and his whole situation. saying they'd understand if he couldn't come back, but that they just wanted to know, at the very least, that he was okay. so very loving and yet very heartbreaking :(

I take back the comment that i posted previously about Richey saying that he hasn't been declared dead, he's been declared 'presumed dead' because thinking about it now i suppose in a way it's the same thing, i think you said yourself on your channel 'or' page that it doesn't mean that Richey is actually dead. I take it your a big Manics/Richey fan like myself.

kamilloquai. just to clarify, being "declared dead" & being declacred as "presumed dead" is not the same thing. if Richey was "declared dead" that would mean that his body was found, that there was physical proof that he died. But "presumed dead" is without having any actual evidence, & is more of an assumation that he probably is dead by this point. so that's why it still could mean that Rich is alive, coz there was never any physical proof that he died. & yes, i am a big Richey/Manics fan :)

thank you kittilish. i'm sure Richey is indeed staying beautiful wherever he is. i'm still trying to come to terms that he's been declared legally "dead" & have been very sad over it. if it helps his family, friends & loved ones, then i respect their decision. i just don't understand why, after keeping his case open for so long, that they decided to close it now? it confuses me. but i understand his family obviously felt it was the right thing to do, or the right time to do it. still sad tho :(

mcwinker - well techincally, we don't know for sure that Richey did kill himself, although that could have been a possibility. Richey has been declared "legally dead", meaning his body was not found, but that they closed his Missing persons case. but i get what you're sayin, and i know Richey liked Kurt/Nirvana

Fenvox...yes, Richey's family decided to close his case, therefore he is "legally" declared as dead. i'm very sad over this news cuz it feels like there's no hope left in finding him, tho i respect his family's decision. you can read a bit more about it at my main page here at my channel info.

Richey was legally declared dead, it's very very sad. to think of all those years that his family held onto hope and kept his case open for a longer period of time than what is standard (which is 7 years after a person goes missing) so i can only imagine how difficult it had to be for Richey's family to declare him dead. but i hope, at least, it brings them some sense of closure or peace. still so sad :(

Is he alive? Quite possibly but I doubt he's ever going to be found - he was far too intelligent and if he wanted to remain lost, he would do. Let's hope anonymity was all he thought it would be!

i believe Richey is alive. i also believe if he is actually alive, that he won't come back. i think that could possibly be the worst thing for him cuz then he'd really never have any privacy! i agree he was so smart, that no matter what he did, he could pull it off. and i agree too that i hope anonymity was all that he thought it would be. a very beautiful sensitment sdavies25. cheers!

@saraj12. yes, it is quite possible Richey killed himself, but studies have shown that people who self harm actually do it to avoid suicide. it's like a release of internal pain, rather than wanting to end it all.

asdffd. are you asking what happened to Richey before he went missing or afterwards? yes, it is possible he is still alive, though a lot of people think he's dead. some believe he killed himself, others don't but think maybe he died another way. then again, lots of people think he is out there somewhere. anything is possible. but there is no concrete evidence as to what exactly happened to Richey after he disappeared.

I remember reading a quote somebody said about Syd Barett that he looked like he had the beauty of a poet from the 1800s. I think Mr Edward had the same look. Fantastic video. Very moving and well made.

To me, I always thought of Richey as wanting to be more of a poet over a "rockstar". Well, Richey was a poet, a lyrical genuis. I'm just not sure he could handle, or really wanted to be a "rockstar". Maybe in the beginning, but he seemed to want to depart from that the longer he was in the Manics. Just a therory.

I agree. I mean, it's not Richey (as well for Ian\Jim\Layne\etc) who wanted to be a rockstar, maybe. But surely, everyone calls him a rockstar for his madness, for his missing, for his anorexia, MORE than for his music and his creativity. Why must everyone consider him a great artist just because he disappeared, and not for writing\playing 3 great rock albums with Manics?

I really don't know how to answer that, except that sometimes people's pain, like Richey's anorexia & him disappearing somehow gets glorified. You see it in the media about all sorts of people all the time. Plus maybe people focus on Richey's problems over his music since his problems came to a head during the time we were last left with him. I personally don't see that defining him as a person, he was SO much more than his problems - a very beautiful, smart, well spoken & talented man, 4ever!<3

A very under rated Manics song, there is lovely version on the 10" B sides of a single from holy bible but I can't remember which one.
Richie was a fantastic song writer but considering in a short space of time they did songs called "Suicide is painless" (well it was actually called theme from mash) "Spectators of Suicide" and the excellent "Suicide Ally" it does suggest someone had it on his mind.
For me the Manics died when Richie vanished, their later work is poor.
