  • amazing groove!!!

  • /watch?v=Ko0kdCf0zTE

  • Is this not one of the most incredible performances you've ever heard???? Long live jazz!!!!!!!

  • anybody know if there's a full version of this on youtube? i looked awhile back but never did find it

  • 1st song.....Vinnie's all over the place...you can see the other musicians are like "Wha tha fugg are you doing, Vinnie?"

2nd song, Vinnie's in the pocket.

No diss on Vinnie tho. He's a monster. Anyone who can handle Zappa's madness has to be talented as hell.

  • that drummer is insane

  • @seanmitchell88 Yes my friend, you are correct. Vinnie's talents have clearly made him the most sought after session drummer right now on the planet.

  • @seanmitchell88 Yes, you are correct my friend. Vinnie's talents have made him the most sought after session drummer on the planet today.

  • 1:50 Cantaloupe Island epicness

  • You must play musically . You must Play the tune . Drummers play drums . Musicians play Music . My instrument is the drums , and I play Music with my instrument . That's how Tony Williams , Art Blakey , Max , Billy and all the great Musicians who happen to play drums do it . So that's how I'm rolling Homey .

  • @luvtogothere Billy Higgins said "You must play musically . You must Play the tune . Drummers play drums ." Musicians play Music . My instrument is the drums , and I play Music with my instrument . That's how Tony Williams , Art Blakey , Max , Billy and all the great Musicians who happen to play drums do it . So that's how I'm rolling Homey .

  • @luvtogothere Not even ... I actually like Mike Clark's playing better with Herbie . Vinnie is far to busy trying to impress Drum Geeks to actually play the Music . I was mentored by some great Kats like Billy Higgins , Donald Dean , and Son Ship Theus . Not to mention that Nathan East has played with me in my own living room

( Dennis Chambers and Scott Henderson as well to name a few ) .

  • Respond to this video...Please check out (Steve Colman and the five elements ) and see how crazy time signatures can Groove. I didn't mean to insult your drum hero lol. My video is on my page.

  • @luvtogothere .

I totally get the fact that it's a odd meter . BUT IT AINT GROOVING ! AND IT AINT SWINGING . PERIOD !

Dennis Chambers would have done a better job with this tune ( because he CAN groove )

  • anyone who thinks he is messing up is wrong. he is vinnie, he does this shit all the time.

  • Sorry Vinnie is not swinging at ALL !

The time is a little screwed up .

  • @jammmessenger i think its supposed to be!

  • this is the art of the drums

  • Compiler error, analyses aborted. Correct time signature throughout is: SICK / GROOVE

  • woooohooo! where is the whole song? this is just end:(

  • jeez people - you're tryin too hard to analyse & making it more difficult than it is! Just tap your foot dude - IT'S IN 4/4!!

  • @oldrmmr Well, the second half is in 4/4. The first is in 9/8

  • @oldrmmr no, the first part is very certainly not 4 anything, not for 36 bars anyway, as it's in 9.

  • 9/8 it is.

  • DOES HE USE A GRETSCH NEW CLASSIC SNARE TOO ?

  • Tune!

  • echt gutes video hey wer will chattn ich ben so angeödet ^^ wer will meldet sich

  • how does vinnie keep time so perfectly with all of this crazy stuff going on? WWWWWWWWWWWWWWHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY,

  • 9/8 throughout this song, then they segue to "Cantaloup Island". That's the 4/4 bit.

  • search: Amorphic drum .....( 1st video result ).

    what technique is this??

  • I think the intro is in 9/8 time, later goes to simple 4/4 time.

  • It is impossible to showcase the wall of sound this man can create with a drum kit in a recording. If you ever have the chance to see Vinnie play live, don't pass it up.

  • I don't understand how the featured "herbie fully loaded" video has more view than this...

  • VINNIE RULES!

  • funny story bout these two.vinnie was doing seshions for josh groban on an albulm called awake.there this one song that features herbie on it called "machine".coincidental run in eh.check it out.its sooooo farking tight "MACHINE"

  • I saw the Herbie Hancock at the Moldejazz-festival, and I didn't know Vinnie was the drummer, so I came in my pants when he entered the stage.

  • 1:44 Vinnie is starting on a groove that Herbie must have heard a million times but he plays it so funky and right on that Herbie is cracking a smile and digging the groove...to me that smile is a huge compliment to Vinnie

  • Vinnie is the man!

  • tight

  • I wish MD was playing with them....

  • Vinnie Colaiuta... What a monster player!

  • Vinnie's cymbals sound AWESOME!!!!

  • @jsbruzina thats coz there mainly A customs man.there wat ive got and they are just the most pure orgasmic brilliant sound you can get out of a cymbal

  • no coment!

  • shit, vinnie is killin it at the beginning!

  • retard!!! haha

  • @kankeranker lol. i hope you're kidding

  • I have never been more kidding in my life. I doubt that Lars could play this, if his life was depending on it. And thats NOT kidding ;-)

  • the vinnsta's a bad boy!!

  • indeed!

  • what a crazy mofo..

  • yes the vinnie's solo is in 9. and it just barely holds together...

  • I hope you mean that in a good sense. The tension is killer. I presume that is what you meant by barely holding together. And yes, he is ; THE VINNIE!

  • CANTOULOPE ISLAND

  • wat a great combo!

  • Vinnie is awesome.................

  • I don't know if I counted ths right. Is it in 9/8 ?

  • you counted right, 9/8 it is :)

  • @aronizer no, some of it is :)

  • @raelkid Yeah, that's what I actually meant :P

  • @aronizer yeah bro

  • @aronizer I mean, I guess it depends on how you want to interpret it. It feels like 3/4 and 3/8 alternating every bar, which could be written in 9/8. I'm curious to know how Vinnie thinks about it.

  • Comment removed

  • @aronizer yyyyyup.

  • @aronizer no, it is 18/16!

  • @drporter2009 same thing....

  • @drporter2009 Same Thing Dude

  • @JustonGroove Sorry just a prank, I know it is the same thing no harm intended especially since we both agree with many others that Vinnie is one heck of a master drummer. Cheers Juston.

  • @drporter2009 Sorry :-P,I Agree !

  • Does anybody know the title of the first excerpt? The second - of course - is "Cantaloupe Islands...

  • immenso vincenzo colaiuta.

  • his sound's amazing

  • Simply Perfect!

  • Vinnie fuckin shows the way.

  • 1:27 HH doesn't even know his part! LMBO! LONG LIVE ZAPPA!!!

  • U can always count on Vinnie ;)

  • Classical example for the difficulties of drummers soloing over kicks, played not so tied and steady ( bass- player f.e.). Vinnie is fighting, leads and rules the band with help from Mr. Hancock.

  • he is good (vinnie)

  • No...he is GOD (Vinnie)....

  • Saw Vinnie with Jeff Beck at Brighton Dome 24th June this year, awesome drummer, plays with technique and loads of feel, very intuitive player!

  • I love Vinnie's, but i really miss Tony

  • the bass player, play with eric clapton too ?

  • yep

  • Comment removed

  • Yes, I like Peter very much....great drummer and teacher...You to?

  • I know what you're saying, but Peter Erskine is your alternative? Come on, now.

  • i feel you man

i mean i think he's more of a rock flashy guy instead

but so many ppl think he's perfect at jazz but he really isn't

not saying he's bad or anything vinnine's fucking amazing but if i had a choice for a jazz gig i would much rather get someone like dejohnette and this thing's a lot more like fusion/funk not really straight up american jazz

  • I never get sick of this.

  • Vinnie is always new. The the master of the masters, he always keeps learning new stuff until he can play 99.9% of what exists in drumming :)

  • I would love to see him play some death metal. That would be beautiful

  • Death metal? Have you heard him play with Frank Zappa back in the day?

  • No i have not. Im just saying he would have some sick fills if he was into death metal lol.

  • yo do know he plays the drums in Megadeath's album "The System Has Failed" right?...it's not actually death metal but its thrash metal

  • Did not. Thanks. Learn something new everyday..

  • richard christy does some of those "crazy" jazzlike fills that ur talking about on the album "the sound of perseverance" by death. check it out.

    greetz.

  • Yes one of the former Frank Zappa's Drummer!

  • I know. He's always playing something new. Vinnie is the man..

  • i'm still waitng to hear some "modern new sound" from anyone of the thousands of music geniuses i'm reading on the tube's comments

do i wait for so long?

  • look up this guy named spanky mccurdy. look at any of his frankfurt musikmesse videos. he is one of the greatest new sounds of drums

  • You my friend, say the things I'm scared to say for fear of fusion-geek anger fallout.

  • great music and great stuff played by vinnie colaiuta

  • Vinnie is THE MAN!!!

  • are you kidding...its called syncopation

  • I LAWLED at your incompetence, good job :)

  • i see what thriftdig is saying, i think he's talking about around the 1:00 mark. herbie was a little slow on the timing for a second but recovered just fine. Other than that though i thought it was grooving hard.

  • The beginning solo is OK. Vinnie is a great drummer no doubt. But it sorta sounds like a "Buck the band off the horse" moment for me. C. Island is the thing that doesn't sound cohesive to me. Nathan's tone for starters, and then his pocket . Version no.1 for me is Donald Byrd's than Hancock's.

  • I agree with you there. Vinnie is one of the best drummers ever in my opinion, but the solo seemed to be overkill and not very tasteful. When the whole band starts to play though, thats when it gets good!

  • you my friend.. seem to have no idea of this kind of music.

  • Thank God!

  • any1 know who the bass player is??

  • Nathan East

  • nathan east

  • its 9/8

  • yes exactly

  • Not that I dislike Jazz, though I'd love to see Vinnie play some rock/metal stuff. I'm positive that he could do it...

  • He has/does play other stuff. He played with frank zappa for a while and Sting and even did the sessions for a megadeath album recently. He is just a badass on all fronts and his chops plus whacked out ideas of time make him by far my favorite drummer.

  • Can you PM me some of that other stuff? It sounds pretty bad ass.

  • Check out his stuff with Jeff Beck ,right here on Youtube...

  • Is that a 21/16 ?

  • Yes. It's 4/4 add 5 16th notes 4/4 is 16/16

  • LOL!!

  • Comment removed

  • Love Vinnie...he looks like an accountant...but can play the hell out of the drums

  • he can play evrythings He is incredible!!!.D

  • ahaha énorme, merci sincèrement, c'est génial cette reprise, je suis très content, je vous en remercie monsieur qui envoit des videos de cette sorte sur le internet, c'est formidable, je suis content là!

  • thanks for dressing up, vinnie...

  • lol

  • I want more!

  • vinnie is vinnie

  • FZ for life

  • la cago el gueon seco

  • shut up!

O tempo do vinnie colaiuta é um dos mais aclamados do mundo, se vinnie fez assim é pq a música pede para ser assim!

  • damn vinnie is good. i'm pretty new to his drumming but ever since i saw him with dave weckl and steve gadd i knew he was obviously an incredible musician.

  • wow a 9/8 solo with groooove.

    he's the man

  • the feel these guys have for music is almost like there from another planet...born freaks.

  • god dammmmmmmmmmm look at that fuckin sexy ass guitar mannnnnn.

  • vinnie.. is so... DRUMMER !!

  • This is the total stuff in a drummer.

  • I think it's the USA made kit with the smaller tube lugs.......could be wrong..I've owned DWs, Tamas, Slingerland, Ludwig, Rogers and they were all good drums I must say I love the sound of my Gretsch kit. There truly is something to "that great Gretsch sound"

  • Totally man, i've owned a gretsch renown maple set for a couple years, the sound is perfectly warm, and it plays so naturally.

  • He's playing the Gretsch New Classic set. They sound pretty awesome!

  • what kind of a gretsch drum set is that??

  • tony williams(the best)

  • lo m mejor de lo mejor

  • I wonder what drummer Herbie enjoyed playing with most. What do you guys think? I think it would probably be Tony.

  • mike clark

  • Tony Williams

  • DADDY VINNIE!!!! hahaha

  • me parece el mejor video que vi en you tube junto a sus consiguientes videos jajaj que piola esta bueno aprendan jazzzzzzzzzz fusion

  • Vinnie you're the king !!!

  • Did Hancock release any albums with Vinnie apart from the Joni latters?

  • River im pretty sure

  • Thanks but that's the same album

  • just saw him with Herbie and Dave Holland at The Klein on the 15th... phenominal!

  • Where were you sitting!? Amazing huh? Did you get a pic with him like me? lol

  • middle of first row - mezz. Missus and I and a bevy or 2. Yeah, a great engagement!

  • just saw the same line-up at the Hampton Beach Casino...excellent show...

  • VINNIE!

  • gretsch new classic, dayum nice pipes

  • probably my favourite video of vinnie i also believe he has the best sound in this one

  • y does vinnie always wear singlet's n t-shirts...but the only time ive seen him in a suit was at the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert. But other than that, he's phoenomenal

  • probly because he'd die of heat exhaustion playing like he does under those lights in a suit

  • what's the name of the song they are playing in the beginning?

  • The in the beginning before Cantaloupe Island, the song is called 'Virgin Forest'.

  • It's called Cantelope Island
