@over9000christian So what does your ignorant, uneducated ill timed, ill informed and illusionary fairy tale for the weak have to do with the curtis JN-4? People like you are the reason the rest of us either fly and or ride motorcycles...to get away from crazies like you.
its a shame to lose a great airport like that. wally was a good person not only did he teach me to fly but also got to work on his planes and ended up flying all of them that i work. he once said to me is it fix and i reply yes and then with a smile he said cant let a student in it till you fly it. gave me a smile and turned and walk away. after that i work on his planes all the time.. sure miss those days.. chuck lloyd
It's always scared me, the thought of starting a plane like that. I'm sure it's safe with the right know how, but I've never had the chance to be taught.
I Got my license here .. I seen His daughter at Winco a year ago. real shame it shut down. I deliver product to winco So why they still have the North south runway? And beacon lights on poles?
It may have 8 cylinders, but the "power" is largely theoretical. 8 hamsters in their wheels would produce more power than an OX-5. Kudos to anybody willing to keep one of those contraptions flying!
It is remarkable to see a working Curtiss OX-5 engine. I have seen a Curtiss Jenny fly. The one I've seen fly is the rare JN-4H with the Hispano-Souza 150 HP V8 engine. The aircraft is based at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome and has flown there for many years.
Wow, this brings back memories. My grandpa is Wally Olson - the guy who rebuilt the Jenny. At the end, the lady to the left of the sign is the one who made the sign, my mother/Wally's oldest daughter. I'm sure I'm in the crowd there somewhere, as I never missed an airshow at Evergreen. I miss those days more than words can say.
You Grandpa "Wally" and I flown together as I a student and our last flight we survived a crash landing and this month I celebrate another year of living thanks to his skills. Back in 1994 he was my instructor and we were forced down northeast of the airport from doing touch and go's. I learn from him how to stay "COOL" under pressure. He told me to look for a field and I told him there was a small field surrounded by houses(he was flying from the right hand seat. We survived and walked away.
After all was settle down I asked Wally, "So, how many that makes you survived"? He said "I don't keep count" but mumbled "3". Wally was always smiling when I was flying w/him. I found him humorous. He took me and my wife in the biwing trainner(2 seats up front) and I remember his smiling and waving to my camera. I truely miss his teachings and character. To me he's a legend. So sad to hear they closed Evergreen. Makes me want to cry. Good luck in future flyings.
I'm going to Vancouver next week to see the big hangar one last time. I just heard last week that the line of hangars running north-south are down as well as the one to the east of the Evergreen office. I grew up running around there. I should post it - I have a video of the last (legal) plane out of Evergreen; a taildragger who was a regular and learned to fly there, how appropriate.

Yes, Wally Olson was my first flight instructor back in 1965. I was 10.
I ended up knowing Wally until his passing away.
The Jenny he labored to build and then rebuild after the crash is at the interpretive center near Stevenson Washington.
The Evergreen airport is bulldozed flat, and ready for Walmarts, and the like.
Its just a memory now.

Now THAT, is power.

I remember Wally as my first instructor. I was about age 10 flying the Taylorcraft.
This video was about a year after Wally passed away from cancer. Then the airport was poorly run and was finally sold off to developers.
