@vintageguitarguru You mustn't have listened to much of his music. Have you not heard his fingerpicking in Tears in Heaven, Layla, Wonderful Tonight, etc..?
I just read on the Layla video that he went into a racist anti-black rant back in 1976. Man, Eric, say it isn't so my man. I checked into it and it is true as the day. What do I do with all my Eric Clapton vinyls now? I don't want to support a racist but the things he said were pretty bad - actually awful. He said blacks had no place in white Britain. What would Bob Marley think? Man my head is in a spin and my gut is just punched man. Eric man, not you! Racism sucks. I'm crushed

awosoul - Let's be honest here; Eric is a heroin addict, cocaine addict, alcoholic, womanizer and lousy father. THEN, he's a musician.
How about the all the kids who got hooked on heroine trying to emulate their hero, Eric Clapton? Many are dead now. Some are homeless. In this sense, Eric is a criminal. If Eric Clapton sat next to me at a local cafe, I would throw my coffee on him. "That's for cashing in on your dead kid, druggie"! Tears in Heaven, my ass! He CRIED all the way to the BANK!

@MasterJackAubrey - While most celebrities would have DONATED all of the proceeds from a song dedicated to a dead child, Eric chose to keep every nickel for himself. The REASON most of celebrities donate this kind of money to a charity is to avoid looking ghoulish. Profiting off the death of your child can be fatal to your career. In Eric's case, it almost didn't matter. Most of his fans are, themselves, drug addicts and have a memory span of about 15 seconds. Eric's fans are not the brightest.

Yes, because you are French and, whilst personally Piaf isn't my type of singer, her approach is much closer to the Blues idiom of Bessy Smith et al that informed the music of the likes of EC back in the 1960s.
MasterJack (I don't know how you got the master part) can't you ease up and just enjoy. A good friend of mine (an accomplished blues player) once told me, "Either it moves you or it don't, that's it!" My name's Fran Raya and I'm a female singer/songwriter from the UK. I was invited to support Eric Clapton on his Scandinavian tour performing my own songs. He's a true musician and artist in the purest sense. After my spot I used to stand at the side of the stage and watch him play. Inspirational to say the least. He has and always will have a musicians soul. I am so proud to have toured with him.
Filippoman- Look, let's be honest here. Eric Clapton is good, but he hasn't been GREAT since 1969. His fans don't seem to care WHAT he does, so...he doesn't even really try. Most of his concerts are lack-luster affairs that make him huge profits. Eric's more of a business man now than a musician. Boring pentatonics and standard "guitar lesson" finger-plucking. In the end, Eric is kind of like a fashion pair of jeans. As long as the label is there, nobody seems to care about quality.
There are some who think that, but most of his fans think he makes great music to this day. I saw him just a few months ago with Steve Winwood, and he STILL plays amazing guitar. Are there guitar players better than him? Yeah, technically. But his music is very expressive, it doesn't need to be flashy. He often speaks about how much his music means to him, how its practically an obsession. Maybe you need to listen with different ears rather than blame him for playing "lack-luster?"
Obviously you're entitled to your opinion, but I'm baffled as to why you make 1969 the cutoff point. Are you saying he stopped being great when Blind Faith split? The Layla album is widely considered to be his best achievement, and it was recorded in 1970. If you wanted to distinguish between young Clapton and the solo artist, make 70/71 the cutoff. He took a heroin-induced hiatus for a few years and emerged in 74 as the Clapton you seem to dislike. He's changed in the 35 years since, though.
evanguy - Keep in mind "Layla" was up there with other "achievements" like Three Dog Night's "Mama Told Me Not To Come" and Neil Diamond's "Cracklin' Rose". These come from an era when we were TOLD things like Patty Boyd was a "muse", when others might be inclined to call her a wandering whore. Besides, my heroes are cut from a different cloth. For one thing, they write better than Eric. Passing out and waking up in one's own vomit is hardly the basis of a good autobiography.
evanguy - I imagine your idea of "civil" is somebody who AGREES with you? What I would like to see here on Youtube and everywhere else is the process of DISCERNING. In a world full of talented people, why do we keep throwing money at the same people? Year after year it's always the same old men. Mind you, Eric Clapton is not the problem. I don't blame a dog for eating shit, that's just his nature. I blame the mindless public for LETTING him.
I have no problem with legit criticism. Your first reply to the vid was pretty much that, and I simply offered my opinion in response and asked you to clarify. I did not insult you or your tastes, and I was surprised by your response. You seem unnecessarily hate-filled and vitriolic toward a popular musician. He's... just a musician. Lighten up. Listen to your favorite music and stop thinking about dogs eating their own shit.
i dont like simon climie and his productions with eric since in 1997..i prefer the "old" clapton of journeyman and fromthecradle & the all albums of the70 80 years, for my, clapton with blackmoore and hendrix..best in all time!!!!

OK, let me just drive my point 'into the ground' again. I always looked up to Eric's stuff. He wasn't just a great guitarist, he wasn't just a guy who knew where to be at the right time to make it big. He played from his soul and sang from his heart.
And I totally applaud him to move into a new way of songwriting and to not be 'stagnant'.
But this song (even though it's nice) has a somewhat rambling structure of chords.
This is a great song. I love Eric Clapton - like George Harrison, he brings a very earnest, plain-spoken sincerity to his songs that connects to me on an emotional level. I think he's very underrated as a songwriter (although I could do without his Phil Collins period stuff).
It's just Eric. He does everything so smooth and fluid. The playing really isn't that complex, its just fingerpicked chords. But when he plays it; its just.... WOW. He really can make the simplest song into a masterpiece.
May you play for many long years, Eric. God Bless.
I musta played it about 5 times and gave up. I suppose if I put in the hours I'd get it eventually. Thing is he plays this accoustic version mainly on the bass strings while the studio track has about three guitars playing all over the neck.
I really like his accoustic fingerpicking, "Three Little Girls", "Tears in Heaven" are all great.
I really prefer this acoustic version.... Pure, simple, and its just Clapton. If John Mayer touches this song, I swear I will SHOOT him. That guy needs to doing covers of Clapton's songs. Crossroads was alright, but only because he played WITH Clapton. His Old Love sucked. The guitar playing wasn't anything special, and his voice.... ugh it was disgusting!
There is something very special about Eric Clapton regardless of his detractors. His voice has always seemed to fit perfectly with his guitar playing. Sheer Genius.
this is supreme guitar playing ,this kind of playing is well harder than most people think, one of the hardest in my opinion!! play tis faultless-ly then call urself accomplished!
no, alicia keys is skeet. her newist song is like "refrian" over and over. no one, no one no one can get in the way of what im feeling. ten minutes later, same thing over. her songs are too basic for clapton to play with.
He is a legend. An amazing voice that keeps getting better, blazing guitar skills. The best blues, ballads...everything..and yeah, he looks like a kind again man.
well, he has said many times that he has no idea what peope like and he just plays what he wants and hopes people will like it. I think sometimes he ust enjoys plaing mellow music. It cant all be fast electric guitar solos and marshall stacks
Master...No words to describe his finesse. He's amazing!!!!

Eric Clapton, you rock!
One of my all-time favorite artists.
I saw him in San Diego, March 2011, and he is one of the most talented and classy acts ever.
He ranks up there with Jeff Beck and B. B. King as a genuine legend.
Thank you for the post!

HE MAKES THIS LOOK SO DAMN EASY
tlp26atx 3 years ago 12
Its not that hard, actually it looks (or better sounds) a lot harder than it is. Its the the same picking pattern during the whole song.

Can you make a video of yourself playing this song? I would sure like to learn. Thanks!

This is the best of Erics slow and sad songs, and it sounds better live only on acoustic guitar, CLAPTON IS A GOD!!!!!!!

I have always been so much into Eric Clapton (!)
but I feel that he is kind of 'fishing' for interesting chords here to fit into the 'modern' trend of songwriting.
I don't mind if I make a hundred enemies here ... I only said what I think.
PS. I'll listen to it a few more times - maybe it will grow on me.
But, so far, none of Eric's stuff needed to grow on me. It usually always made it to me straight.

meh, your right, its right to expect him to stagnate as an artist and never change ever after a 35 year musical career, evolution is for fags

PS. No need to be sarcastic about my comment

This is a great song. I love Eric Clapton - like George Harrison, he brings a very earnest, plain-spoken sincerity to his songs that connects to me on an emotional level. I think he's very underrated as a songwriter (although I could do without his Phil Collins period stuff).
bbqplatypus318 3 years ago 2
Thanks for posting, now if I can just figure out how he plays it. . .
jpmist 3 years ago 2
It's just Eric. He does everything so smooth and fluid. The playing really isn't that complex, its just fingerpicked chords. But when he plays it; its just.... WOW. He really can make the simplest song into a masterpiece.
May you play for many long years, Eric. God Bless.
mustangman442002 3 years ago 2
I musta played it about 5 times and gave up. I suppose if I put in the hours I'd get it eventually. Thing is he plays this accoustic version mainly on the bass strings while the studio track has about three guitars playing all over the neck.
I really like his accoustic fingerpicking, "Three Little Girls", "Tears in Heaven" are all great.
jpmist 3 years ago
I really prefer this acoustic version.... Pure, simple, and its just Clapton. If John Mayer touches this song, I swear I will SHOOT him. That guy needs to doing covers of Clapton's songs. Crossroads was alright, but only because he played WITH Clapton. His Old Love sucked. The guitar playing wasn't anything special, and his voice.... ugh it was disgusting!

i hope john mayer dies...f@#$k hate him

I just started reading Eric's autobiography.
He was THE hero guitar player for all of us in the late 60's and 70's.

There is something very special about Eric Clapton regardless of his detractors. His voice has always seemed to fit perfectly with his guitar playing. Sheer Genius.

Eric Clapton, can I suggets that do an album with Alicia Keys? Think about it.
Jadyellow8 4 years ago
no, alicia keys is skeet. her newist song is like "refrian" over and over. no one, no one no one can get in the way of what im feeling. ten minutes later, same thing over. her songs are too basic for clapton to play with.
staplestrat 4 years ago 2
He is a legend. An amazing voice that keeps getting better, blazing guitar skills. The best blues, ballads...everything..and yeah, he looks like a kind again man.

oh he till has bite. believe me, i saw him back in March and i thought i had been hit by lightning
Hektor88 4 years ago
I think you may be right from what I have heard.
but i do miss the hard delta edge he once had.
"ramblin" with the blues breakers just very honest and true. The sessions for Robert Johnson
would have been much better. Then Me and Mr Johnson.Sometimes he is way too mellow and aiming for the masses
andrew6678 4 years ago
well, he has said many times that he has no idea what peope like and he just plays what he wants and hopes people will like it. I think sometimes he ust enjoys plaing mellow music. It cant all be fast electric guitar solos and marshall stacks
