you will save more money if you shave after you take a shower....i have a Gillette mach 3 turbo and been using it for over 2 months....still cuts like new
I heard there was a guy who was paid a million by Gillette to shut up because he discovered an electro process or something, of re-sharpening his razors.
this works... i just shaved and the 4bladed razor was getting dull..had hairs that werent getting cut...did the jean thing and the razor shaved just like new..
WAIT, I bought a pack of Fusion Proglide heads, shaved a few times with it, but then when I used the blue jeans it destroyed the remaining lubrication on the top strip? Are you supposed to use shave until the razor lubricator is completely gone and used up, then use the jeans or can you start from the first use of the razor heads? (No, I did not slide it in the wrong direction).
@animebuff86 Can't say I've ever tried it with razors having lubrication. It would most likely make sense to wait until the lub is gone before using the jeans.
@rpaulpen I thought that all of the more expensive razor blades we buy have that additional strip above the blades on each head. I know you can buy really inexpensive ones with just the blades like packs of 10 heads for $4 bucks. Which brand and type of razor do you use when shaving?
@animebuff86 This method is meant to rehone the blades only. It is also meant to be done when the blade is ready to be tossed (which is supposed to be when the lubrication has all but worn away).
@animebuff86 If you cover the lubricated strip with a small piece of plastic wrap, you can rub it against the blue jeans without damaging the remaining lubrication.
@meanbeanmachine Yes, thank you. Very good point. I should have thought of that after my first shave. I don't really know what I was thinking that the jeans could be used with all that excess lubrication on it :)
This tip is fantastic. I came across it looking for information about the latest market gimmick otherwise known as The Razor Pit. To be honest it struck me as odd that men would complain about the cost of replacing blades and yet see The Razor Pit as good value. It is after all just an old fashioned strop. My guess is that bathrooms will soon have more of these gadgets in the back of the cupboard, just as most kitchens have many 'must haves' stored away........never to see the light of day.
Blades get less effective as hair fragments and foam and soap collects on the edge of the blade. This is why many razors feel blunt after using just once. This process wipes a lot of that gunk away and re-exposes the sharp edge.
I learned about this little trick 8 months ago and I've been using the same razor without ever it ever going dull since then. In my experience brushing the razor against a towel works as well. Good stuff.
Ha - I have done this for years not realizing it. I wondered why my razors lasted for so long. I got 3 months out of one. Also noticed over the years that the "sample" razors lasted longer than the store bought ones regardless of what I did.
razors used more than once run the risk of getting contaminated with bacteria and staph and all sorts of nasty crap that can infect a cut so why take chances? Old school safety razors and dovo shavettes are so economical you can trash them each shave and replace the blade with a sterile new one each shave for under a dollar and depending on the blade you choose sometimes less than 15 cents a shave.
the cheapest way to shave by far is to do it with a straight razor. I've been on the same razor for about 5 years now and it cuts just as if it were new. I see no end to the use of this $40 razor, unless possibly I loose it!!! It's the way to go.. try it out.
@otti7021 I had the same problem with DE razors (safety razors). My face was getting all eaten up by the blade. I gave it a year of rethinking and I tried my hands on a straight razor and I've got nothing but smooth shaving now. My skin have never been happier. I would highly recommend trying it. Not much to get started and once you get the hang of it you'll be shaving just as quick as you would with a disposable. A friend once told me "disposable razors are for disposable men!".
@rbechard yeah I have gone back to the mach3 for the time being and ditched the de razor. I am thinking of getting a dovo shavette and given it try. do you have a proper cut throat and strop it up before a shave? is it hard to do?
@otti7021 I currently own 4 "proper" straights, getting the hang of it just takes time. You'll figure out your own face and eventually you'll be shaving clean and at minimal cost. If you do get a shavette, make sure to note that the blade length is significantly shorter then a true straight razor, making the shave take a bit longer but don't be discouraged. Happy shaving and good luck.
@markevens There's no problem with the process. There is no claim that a razor will last indefinitely, but it will extent the life considerably. Yes, yes, I know that technically we are not removing metal so not sharpening, but it does give you back the sharp edge, so same difference. However, if one goes to the extreme of stropping with leather and honing compound, it is removing metal therefore sharpening.
@rpaulpen Sorry, I didn't mean to come off harsh. I'm sure this will help extend the life of a disposable cartridge considerably, I was just pointing out its shortcoming.
@dr0ckkk sharpening/honing compound. Used to rub on leather for honing a razor or sharpening knives or tools. You can get it at lee valley or any knife sharpening store.
@colorfulcrisis Doing the same thing...passing it ten times each way...across tin foil? How does that work? There is no abrasion on a smooth piece of tin foil. Curious-
Tried this and what a difference in the shave. I use the Mach 3 and with this method I push less and get no razor burn. Adding this with cleaning the razor in Rubbing Alcohol to avoid water corrosion has kept me on the same blade and nick free for three weeks. Thanks.
Wonderful! Years ago I tried the straight blade for six months but quit because I always cut myself several times, had to sharpen it about every day (I have a tough beard, now use electric). I might try your method. Completely agree about the undue cost of the blades, & throwing away the plastic and blade. 'Same goes for hand saws. Silly to dump something that's only one thousandth defective. There should be a free automatic saw & drill sharpener service in every neighbourhood. Bruce in NZ.
Well all be darned! A You tube tip that actually works! VERY well as a matter of fact.. Wish I had heard of this for the last 30 years! Imagine the money I would have saved.
@xmoroseguyx Sorry but a "value range" razor just plain does not work for me nor the majority of men. Believe me, I've tried every razor on the market (in USA) and have never found any that give me anywhere near the closeness of a Gillette triple blade. This little trick works fantastic and severely cuts down on the expense of using the premium brand.
It's just a piece of leather with green honing compound. You can get it at leevalley in canada. Not sure in the states, but I'm available anywhere that sells knifes and carpentry tools.
The green compound is very likely Chromium Oxide (CrOx). It is quite popular among straight razor users to sharpen a razor that is just starting to dull.
It comes as a dry compound that is mixed with some oil, which turns it into a paint like substance. One can then paint it onto a piece or leather, or alternatively a piece of balsa wood.
@michiganlover It's just called honing compound. It's used for knife and tool sharpening. It basically is a fine grit and takes away some of the metal you are sharpening. It comes in a square like crayon form. I just rub it on the leather. Others melt it first or heat up the leather to open up the pores. It can be purchased at any sharpening or tool place like lee valley.
I searched the Lee Valley site, the product appears to be called "Veritas® Honing Compound", and it is a combination of Chromium, and Aluminum Oxides. So not pure Chromium Oxide like I had said, but the same grit size (.5 micron) that is typically used to sharpen straight razors.
Rather than being a powder you mix with oil, this variation seems to instead be suspended in a wax like substance.
Just a little nit-pick, but you aren't actually sharpening the razor. If you look under a microscope, you can see that the cutting edge of a razor is extremely thin and curls in on itself during normal use. This merely uncurls the metal, making it usable again.
Understood, but wanted to keep the title very simple instead of "realigning edge on razor" or "uncurling as razors edge". For practical sake, the razor is being resharpened.
@rpaulpen It is not being resharpened in any sense of the word. To resharpen a razor, you would have to be removing metal. Stropping burnishes the edge, correcting an edge that has been distorted due to shaving.
Something else that will help make them last longer - once you've rinsed the razor after shaving, splash it with a high concentration of rubbing alcohol. The alcohol will displace the water on your blade, and evaporate quickly on its own, so your blade won't get even micro-rust.
