As far as torture goes, no torture is not acceptable under any circumstance. Especially in the CIA's case where it's US citizens they are torturing and sometimes murdering. As for the "suspected terrorists," maybe torture wasn't acceptable, who knows. They were doing what they had to do. Getting information vital to the protection of the United States. It's a very tough call to make. If what they did broke the law, they should be punished. If not, let them go.
I just finished reading "Legacy of Ashes", while the torturing, the placing of brutal rulers around the world and just plain criminal activities that are often reserved for organized crime didn't surprised me ( those of us who had lived outside the US have known this for years) what did surprised me was the complete and total ineptitude and the arrogant view that the rest of the world should adapt to the US instead of the other way around.
That was the real painful lesson of 9/11 in my opinion.

This book is the most complete and up-to-date unbiased journalistic analysis of the CIA that I have read. It seems complete in references of newly released documents through 2005-6. From my prior knowledge I agreed with the 98% of the facts. Tim you probably know the other 2% I refer to...but if not, it's your info on 9/11.

But, its biased by Weiner's thesis re: CIA's incompetence, which is correct, but Weiner does not suffer CIA even the most minor success. EVERYTHING he includes in the book is a failure or a success marginalized as very minor, dumb luck, or a near-miss. When everything in a work of history conveniently conforms to the thesis, it raises some doubts about bias.
This book is an incredibly well sourced and lucid indictment of American imperialism. The cowboy arrogance and serio-comic bungling we have seen from the current administration has deep roots and it is clear that Truman, Eisenhower and JFK [ I am almost halfway through it]had as much innocent blood on their hands re preserving American hegemony as does the dolt from Crawford. Most chilling is the consistent contempt for the American public, who have been routinely deceived for half a century.

As far as torture goes, no torture is not acceptable under any circumstance. Especially in the CIA's case where it's US citizens they are torturing and sometimes murdering. As for the "suspected terrorists," maybe torture wasn't acceptable, who knows. They were doing what they had to do. Getting information vital to the protection of the United States. I just finished reading "Legacy of Ashes", while the torturing, the placing of brutal rulers around the world and just plain criminal activities that are often reserved for organized crime didn't surprised me ( those of us who had lived outside the US have known this for years) what did surprised me was the complete and total ineptitude and the arrogant view that the rest of the world should adapt to the US instead of the other way around.
That was the real painful lesson of 9/11 in my opinion.

War is big business. Do you think JFK and RFK were simply killed by some random nut? No. They were political murders having to do with the fact that both those guys wanted a withdrawal from the Vietnam war and peace with the communists. I believe what the CIA does is very necessary to our national security, but they DO abuse their power from time to time. There just needs to be more oversight from people that cannot be bought off.

I say sometimes what they do is necessary because sacrificing a couple agents to stop a national incident, or doing something to stop a full on war, saves the lives of American citizens. Think of it this way. Would you rather sacrifice a couple agents, or sacrifice 50k American lives like in Vietnam over something stupid? What they do is ugly, I admit it, but often, it's very necessary. People only find out about shit they do cuz they have more leaks than an old roof.

This book is the most complete and up-to-date unbiased journalistic analysis of the CIA that I have read. It seems complete in references of newly released documents through 2005-6. From my prior knowledge I agreed with the 98% of the facts. Tim you probably know the other 2% I refer to...but if not, it's your info on 9/11.

"Unbiased"? Not quite. I enjoyed the book and think its an invaluable synthesis of the record. But, its biased by Weiner's thesis re: CIA's incompetence, which is correct, but Weiner does not suffer CIA even the most minor success. EVERYTHING he includes in the book is a failure or a success marginalized as very minor, dumb luck, or a near-miss. When everything in a work of history conveniently conforms to the thesis, it raises some doubts about bias.

This book is an incredibly well sourced and lucid indictment of American imperialism. The cowboy arrogance and serio-comic bungling we have seen from the current administration has deep roots and it is clear that Truman, Eisenhower and JFK [ I am almost halfway through it]had as much innocent blood on their hands re preserving American hegemony as does the dolt from Crawford. Most chilling is the consistent contempt for the American public, who have been routinely deceived for half a century.
