  • Hey, stumbled on this looking for a cover of this great track i hadn't heard. Can i say as a fello9w musician i am really impressed by this, you are well talented! Thanks for this :)

  • How many guitars do you have? 100?:) Great job.

  • I also like this version more than the original. Very good!

  • very cool... (read : talented bastard)

do you write or play live?

    with your ability, you should.

  • To be honest, I kind of prefer this version over XTC's... I like the rhythm guitar part in this. It'd be cool to hear a cover of "Generals and Majors".

  • Thank you very much. I will definitely do more XTC. One thing I regret about this is that I should have stuck in a verse from The Police's 'De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da' (the verse of that being a shocking rip off of this!)

  • you nailed it. great interpretation!

  • pretty good but the original and Primus' will remain my favourites.

    Nice blue Ricky, though!

  • you all are the same person and sampled it? genious!

  • excellent stuff!

  • whats the vocal set up re reverb effect.we share a lot of the same anorak tendencies but in a good way.used to dream of rickenbacker 360 's,gretches etc all things sixties the i discoverd tom waits and momus.your stuffs good and well played /produced. regards "the lunatic engineer"

  • fantastic cover of a classic mate

  • Lovely.

  • Really nice cover! Is the drum part played the same? The original sounds like he is riding the low tom. Or am I just making it way to hard?

  • no...your right...in the original it's a low tom ride

  • oh good, I was afraid I was playing it wrong. It took me a long time to figure out how to play it that way.

  • nigel would be proud! haha, i see the mac mini on the side too :P did you use imovie and garage band to make this? very very good man!

  • 'This man could balance mastering the flute while eating breakfast'. You've obviously been watching too much porn, your an idiot or just doing drugs

  • This is fantastic!! I wish you had this on the download list! :(

    Love your music so much!

  • Like your blue guitar.

    Great rendition!

  • Really excellent cover of the classic.!!!

  • Well... I can say that I liked it.

You have Nigel's seal of approval. (y)

  • Great job fellow musician. Much truer than the Primus attempt. Nigel would be proud! Retro-bliss.

  • nice one!

  • N'importe quoi ...

  • Great cover as usual sir, you definately are one of the greatest musicians out there.

  • I'd love you to do a cover of 'Shopping' by The Jam...that would be great...I'll bet you'd really do it justice...It's just the flute solo that's a problem...

  • This man could balance mastering the flute while eating breakfast in one sitting. I think we needn't worry...

  • I wanted to say it sounds like a real carbon copy, but no... we can think it's the same but if you hear well, it's better. great work. this version sounds... how to say that ? wiser maybe. in the way that XTC version sounds to much 80's with all the crazyness who is going with it. and now in 2008 we must admit that a lot of 80's songs are a bit annoying even if we still love them. *excuse my english* I hope you understand what I wanted to say.

  • whoa!

    that Azure Glo is awesome!

I have a MG/BT that was Jet Glo refin....

    get it?

    Rokkitt

  • Thats great work, it really takes me back. A technical feat of musical engineering on your part. Bravo. (And yes I am a fan of XTC too)

  • Thats great work, it really takes me back. A technical feat of musical engineering on your part. Bravo. (And yes I am a fan of XTC too)

  • awesome, really awesome!

  • Would anyone else agree with me if I said this was indie rock in the 70s? Way too ahead of its time.

  • punk rock

  • any plans to do a Stone Roses cover? I'd love to hear your take on "I am the Resurrection". I can only assume that you appreciate John Squire's guitar work.

  • Thanks (as always) for the compliments. There's more to XTC than this song - others I considered covering: The Mayor of Simpleton, Sgt. Rock, Life Begins at the Hop, This is Pop, King for a Day, Wake up, Senses Working Overtime, Ten Feet Tall and especially No Thugs In Our House. All on the 'Fossil Fuel' singles compilation.

  • Would love to hear a cover of King for a Day. It would be fascinating to see what you bring to that song.

  • Yeah I bought a XTC disk because of this song and none of the other tracks match up! Oh well they cant all be the smiths.

  • OMG..a face!

  • you know Ive been having this song stuck in my head for the last 2 weeks

and I have seen the XTC original and I think I like Dan's better

  • me three..

  • i wonder if people still think you're Mr. Marr.

  • I was never convinced.

  • haha.

  • The electronic drums sound great.

  • These are the built-in sounds of the Roland TD-12. They're okay but a bit limited. I've since got a beefy new Mac with enough memory to run BFD2, and the sound from that is unbelievable. Sounds more real than my attempts at recording real drums ever did.

  • Dan how do you just know the chords to the songs you cover?

    Amazing ears.

  • Yeah a electronic drum kit now!

Very jealous. (not that I can play drums but I love electro baby)

  • [jealous]how do you afford all of your equipment?[/jealous]

  • Funny you should mention that, I've got to go to work right now.

  • Thanks for these comments!

  • Yeah the production work done on this video is better then the original recording. What an age we live in.

Never heard of XTC before but I think I just found another band to research. Thanks again Dan.

You listen to the track as you play? Hardcore.

  • >You listen to the track as you play? Hardcore.

Not the original XTC track - this version is quite a bit faster than the original. I started by playing a guide track of guitar to a click track. Then did the drums, the tremolo'd Gretsch, the Telecaster lead (the video didn't come out well), the bass and finally the vocals. The earplugs are Futuresonics that I usually monitor with. If I want to hear it "out loud" I have the Roland DM-2100 system but I don't recommend it.

  • Ahhhh face, whats the world coming to?

I had never heard this song before this video, but honestly I think its better than the original. Your guitar work is much better. Keep posting, please.

  • great, as always.

Of course, as always, the successor to Johnny Marr.

  • Superb stuff. What about a cover of Pylon's Crazy, as done by R.E.M? I reckon you could nail that brilliantly.

  • great cover I love all your Smiths performances but Im so glad you do others as well like REM

I can only guess whats next
