@mavrickindigo I find it to be really interesting. He isn't really asking to be forgiven. He is sumply lulling them into his paradise. If they accept, they will fall under his rule, and absolute tyranny, and that is what the emperor, living, evil or light, wants above all. The fact that he lashes out when they defy him further proves that he will not tolorate dissenters, and that he has no qualms with murdering those that he deems worthy.
Ah, I see your point, however, also know that God can be seen as rather tyrannical to those who do not understand faith. From a Christian perspective, God actually rules everything absolutely, and those that rebel are cast into Hell because by rebelling against God, they are being evil. The emperor here is offering the same kind of situation that God offers. Your idea is interesting though, but I still think square has something against God for this scenario, whether the emp was being evil or no
@mavrickindigo Ah, well, I wasn't talking about god. I'm talking about the emperor, who shares no similarities with god. The emperor is not a god, or god, and that is the point. He is an extremely powerful single-minded mortal who becomes god-like. As this is as it stands, he still maintains his personality that he had while living, and that is power-hungry and tyrannical. I am not speaking in a theological perspective, but rather a phsycological and philisophical one.
On a side note, the emperor also embodies a, what we in the philosophy department like to call, a true human. We are both light and dark, and while most characters are clear-cut good or bad guys, the emperor is shown to be light and dark, even with his obvious villainous traits. Mateus is greedy, he lacks compassion, he is ruthless...and while he lacks any heroic traits, he can justify his actions through his belief that he is the most eligible person to rule society.
Finally (and yes, this is the last inbox stuffer I'll send lol), Mateus does not want to be worshiped like a god, rather, he simply wants others to submit to his will. This is not religious, it is a theme of totalitarionism that is seen time and time again. He tells them that he is the ruler, and if they do not submit, they will be punished, just like mutiners. It is like Mark Twain said "Humans make Hell." Well, Mateus sure as hell did. He is not a god, just a powerful human.
@xAznSkyxx That's what makes him so bad. He's a master manipulator. If he teamed up with Kefka, he would have done what Kefka did to Gestahl. If he teamed up with Sephiroth, he would have taken the Black Materia for himself. If he teamed up with Kuja, he would probably fabricate his origin story and make him his pawn.
And in Dissidia, he was going to take over once Chaos' and Cosmos' forces destroyed one-another.
