Mandrax is the main thingy about Syd Barrett, if i remember correct from the book about his life. And yes he's very artistic and he took lots of LSD too. I think there was more to it though. If anyone here is interested to think twice, i recommend the odd documentary "The devil and Daniel Johnston", about this extraordinary young creative dude, who wrote very fascinating and odd lyrics and music and he was starting to get famous. His story reminds me of Syd. It gives some perspective to it all.
Oh stop with the drug-caused-mental-illness already. He simply did not want to sell his soul to the devil and left the scene when realized that the industry is fucked up. And if you don't hear voices in your head then there's something wrong with you. I hear them all the time. I call them conscience.
His "friends" overdosed him, they used to play pranks on eachother dosing when the other wasn't aware of it. Of course they didn't know much about LSD at the time then.
Lsd is a mind drug....heroin is a physical, heroin is said to be the drug that the top of the drugs ladder....but believe lsd can seriously knock you sideways....i stopped taking drugs 11yrs ago due to bouts of psycosis just like syd..... all drugs have there dangers beileve it or not dope is the worst one for me.....i have the same illness as syd...
All things considered, Syd lived to be 60 years old. For someone that supposedly did heavy drugs and had mental illness, he managed to live a long life without falling into the same pitfalls as Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley.
Syd Barrett had such a great singing voice, that it makes me cry listening to some his songs, because he fucked up his life with heavy drugs and shit.
He didnt really fuck his life up with heavy drugs. It was a group effort. People would spike him with large doses of LSD almost daily. They thought it was funny. Not too funny now...
@Seattlecarnut It's debatable whether the "heavy drugs" ruined his life. If anything the LSD simply triggered the psychotic breakdown that would have occurred anyway (although at a later time).
The way I see it is that Syd couldn't handle his own creativity. Poor man broke under his own artistic pressures.

@Winyamo No, it's not. I used to have an older brother who did drugs and alcohol. That sure fucked him up.

@Seattlecarnut No way! The drugs made him so mysterious...
Sad but true...

@Ratcaller Sad indeed. My favourite songs he did included Jugband Blues, See Emily Play and Bike.
