The one and only time when the weak and pathetic Ottomans managed to defeat the British Empire... and only down to bad planning. The Ottomans were weak and had been a joke for nearly half a century.
@oxl81 Yes, Turks are indeed fierce fighters, but it's proven that the fall of the Roman Empire brought backwardness to the world. I mean, they bathed every day and had central heating! What the hell, right? Two things we only started to have in XIX century. Whatever, merry christmas.
@3choBlaster but cant blame you, because the higher ups of anzac made you people believe that turks are cruel, man eating and merciless, so your thoughts was: gotta rid those monsters from this world...but when you saw a turkish young man dying then you realised that you are being lied by those hgher ups but before you could stop you died...but most people wanted to see war, blood, action and chaos...
No matter, what let no one say that any soldier involved, Turk, Aussie, New Zealand, did not fight with the utmost bravery. They deserve that at least.
Blame the leaders, rushed planning in warfare almost ALWAYS leads to a disaster, if not that then a harder fight then necessary.
my great grandfather was stationed in Yemen, then the war broke out they had to retreat from Yemen after couple hard battles that they could not win, however he survived so that he could walk all those miles back to Turkeys inner land and all the way up to the Agean so that he could have his victory in Gallipoli! We still Honour him for helping to save us and give us a bright future, not as slaves to the Brittish or the French!!! my great grandfather died 1985, 103years old. RIP to all solders!

@olivierkepo I think it's one part from the BBC documentary called 'The Great War', it was first released in the 60's. You can get the boxset on DVD from amazon.
I know most things one is needed to know about World War 2, and I know I'm going back in time from World War 2 and I know pretty much only 2 things about World War 1: Germany did try to get Mexico to join them and attack the United States and 2: We Americans did do very little in World War 1, but we did help against Germany. Couple things I wanna know about Turkey during World War 1/In general: How much land in the Middle East did Turkey capture (If they did)? Are Turks actually Arab or no?
Turkey did not exist at the time of WW1; what did exist was the Ottoman Empire. This had reached its largest and most powerful in the 16th Century. By the start of the 20th century it had lost power and shrunk to a fraction of its former size but still held lands in eastern Europe, Greece and parts of the middle east. Other powers referred to it as the sick man of Europe. The Ottomans lost land during WW1 and continued to do so until the Turkish Republic was establshed in 1923.
Turks are not Arabs. The Turks originated in central Asia where they were in constant conflict with the Chinese. Eventually the Turks migrated into Anatolia in the 11th Century. The Ottoman empire started as a collection of Turkish tribes banded together under one Lord, Osman, in the late 13th century. It should be noted that the 'Turkish' soldiers that fought in WW1 were Turk, Arab, Greek, Kurd.... The languages of these peoples are all completely different.
@Guzunderstrop Well, it's still pretty interesting. But they're still a Middle Eastern/Muslim nation, right? I kinda figured Turks aren't Arabs so I don't know why I asked that question. I guess it was just so it was a for sure thing.
I finished reading a military biography of Churchill and the arrogance of the British officer class was the cause of this campaign being a complete failure.
He was advised that the only was to take Gallipoli was a joint Naval, Army and air assault, they ignored it.
You'd think the Brits would have learned their lesson about arrogance in the Boer Wars.

And the "letters he talked about" are not ignored. If you really knew the name changed 7 times why the hell did you say "it was istanbul since 1453?" You changed your position on the armenian massacre. First you say it was fake, then you say it wasn't a REAL REASON of british invasion. "Freedom fighters dont blow up mosques."

...what a fool and weak-argument chatter box. Your "comment" is like a head piping out from the blue. And I say to you WHAT A FOOL WITH NO ARGUMENTS ARE YOU REALLY BOY!
I can not see how come and the Bulgaria was seen as a potential ally of the entenet as her pro-prussian sympathies were widely demonstrated.
Furthermore, Goeben and Breslau were going eastwards for that and only reason, to reinforce the weak Turkish navy and "decompensate" the loss of the two battleships that underwent seizure by the British been still on the shipyards of the "old Albion".
Last but not least, Armenians were not the onlyones that felt the turkish yatagan.
Something that I forgot about the so called "chase" of Goeben and Breslaou... Brits were not so distressed to find out that the German cruisers had "escaped" to the Ottomans. Why is that? In a single phrase: Because they wanted to give a hard time to the Tsar and his lust to descent to the South and gain control of a warm sea port, let alone the control of the entire Black Sea!
Moreover the damage of the failed Gallipoli expedition was much more greave for the Russians rather than the Brits and this because the weak Russian industry (let alone the obliterated logistics of the Tsaris Army) was not capable of providing arms nor adequate ratios! So the needed manna, so needed and expected from the unfreezing and unblocked (by the Germans) waters of the South never came. The result is known to everybody; mutiny, revolution, civil war, and so on
P.S. About the Goeben and Breslaou "escape" if you do not belive what I have stated about all this been a big hoax then you can replay me and I will provide you with some hints-evidents about this matter.
I do not have any opposition but rather want t stress that Greeks, Christians Assyrians and Syrians were also massacred, violently deported and...(no reason to replay the atrocities committed from an army know about its ferocity against the unarmed, the women and the old and its particular interest in looting and pillaging) during the years of the Great war (not to mention that this "bloody party" continued in the year of 1922).
