  • I Just noticed tornado in the 1952 scene when scotsman was in BR Blue. 60163 wasnt built by then.

  • This is the best one of the best episodes you have ever produced Well done#

  • hi when will the next BRWS episode come out! just tell me the name (also if i remember what i read some where it is going to be called tale of the tay! )

  • Can u make a flying scotsman bachmann/hornby review

  • @BooBooChooChoo561 - yeah, I'm going to need a lot more than a few hundred quid from selling some models. That's why I got a job with flexible hours: to try and build the capital to do it all.

  • 6:11 The number 60163 is visble on a blue A1 in the backround isn't this over 50 years early for the tornado to appear. ;).

  • At 2:39, did Scott just say, "damn"?

  • 1:22 is that Hawk!

  • that whistle in the beginning blew up some ear drums!

  • @BramGroatFilms - People keep saying that to me, and I just don't understand it. The word "damn" even came up in the Awdry books once or twice...! The age range it is aimed at (7-11) will understand it in its proper context in any event.

  • @simierski can you please name the books numbers ?

  • 4:00 there's a strand of hair on scott's handrail it's waving a bit with the "wind"

  • I think scott's being a little puffed up star biller in the credits

  • 3:26 *cough* *cough* great scott . . . just great

  • nice job!

  • Thank God for Scott's crew!

  • "What are gonna do for an encore? Drop your fire?"

  • 9:40

"WE KNOW THAT!" one of the tank engines said, as he magically disappears as Stephen resumed talking! xD

Just a small goof I've noticed, just watching these again, the more I watch them the more I appreciate the research and dedication you put into the series, well done as always =)

  • From seeing episode one and them looking at this I would think that it was a completely different series altogether. Oh and there was no zombie adverts in front of this episode this time round .

  • And Allen choking on the smoke, also HILARIOUS!!! And so is Sir Ralph's reply "My lovely paintwork!!"

  • Well Scot, I guess that's what happens when you get a rebuild: you get a resemblance to Herbert and the other engines start teasing about it. LOL And Sir Ralph's argument with him, HILARIOUS!!!

  • can i add this series to my tv channel /channel_one_tv as it would advertise your show and bring in people to watch the rest on youtube all credit would go to you

  • I know you do not put the advert in front of your films but they was on about zombie and I think f a child so it it may shock them a lot.

Just tort I would tell you.

  • @penninefilms - I haven't any control over the adverts, and they change from area to area. What you may see in one country will be different in another, and as I have discovered, also dependent on which area of said country you are in.

I can only offer my apologies, but I can do nothing about it.

  • @simierski No you do not need to apologies for that.

The only reason I thought I would tell you was it was a bit of a shock when a zombie came flying at the screen I did not expect The British Railway Series to get the frighting. Any way looking forward to see episode 18.

  • @simierski How did you get the scene of Scotts fireman and driver in the cab and the driving wheels

still spinning??? It looks like you might have filmed with no tender but the train was still moveing.

  • Erm at 4:42 why is Tornado making a cameo?

  • @TopGearFan09 - because I picked up Tornado instead of Kestrel...they're both blue A1s in my collection and I didn't cotton on until after I'd done the episode...

  • @simierski Oh cool. I was just wandering. How did it become blue when it was apple green?

  • @TopGearFan09 - I have both a blue version and an apple green version. I made the blue version myself prior to the apple green version being released.

  • @simierski Well you did a good job. It looks like it came that way from what I could see. You'll be okay when Tornado actually gets painted blue. You won't need to buy the model from Bachmann or whoever as you'll already have it!

  • @simierski did you paint it or scratch build it? |:/

  • Comment removed

  • sir ralph looks better in lner blue

    allan looks betterin br blue

and stephen looks great in lner green

  • A question - was this edited with WMM?

  • Did Flying Scotsman really get fish in his water tank? If he did, that's probably what inspired the Rev.W Awdry to write "Thomas Goes Fishing".

  • @tellymad649 - it's happened quite a few times throughout history. I think the good reverend's story may have its inspiration elsewhere, as actually fishing from a tank, as opposed clearing it out seems more unique. Many sheds were placed near rivers for a source of water, and thus, fish were sometimes picked up!

  • ALERT!!!! ALERT!!!! Historical Innacuracy spotted at 04:55!!! 60163 has time-travelled back into 1952!!!!

  • @Nictrain123 Oh, Shut up!

  • 7:52 is that a steam tram in the BG? or a van? i cant tell

  • LMAO!!!!!!!!HAHAH

  • Will you ever make a reference to the abbotts-ripton train crash, where the flying Scotsman crashed into a train of coal trucks?

  • This puts "Thomas Goes Fishing" in rather a new light, I have to say.

  • Oh BTW. Love the new intro, that whistle sounds like the thunderous fart of god!

  • @jamiegoddard4 LOL!

  • seeing that scotsman is an LNER engine and you said the big shed at Leicester you mean the former GCR shed

  • at 09:43 that tank engine got scrapped, didn`t it...?

  • when will episode 18 be out?

  • Dropping the Fire = Passing Gas???

  • @Enigma2Me yep XD

  • @Enigma2Me nope, its the engine equivalint of someone crapping themselves ._.

  • @Enigma2Me XD

  • You didn't by any chance had one of those rolling roads for the cab shots?

  • @NewController01 - good spot! Yes indeed...they didn't quite work out sadly...

  • Did 4472 really get panited blue? It seems silly to have a loco like that. Also did 4472 have that accident? I love the Flying Scottsman. Grat Episode!!!!!

  • unless it was a tardis with a big door

  • @ShaurntheSheep - LOL! No, I just like advertising my favourite steam engine in this way. It works, mind! :)

  • how did you get a tornado when there wasnt one out then

p.s there must have been a big time machine to get tornado there :)

  • @ShaurntheSheep He converted an existing A1

  • Shouldn't some of the engines be scrapped soon?

  • is it going on dvd

  • Top Link! Thanks for sharing your creativity and humour.

  • "My lovely paintwork!"

If Statler & Waldorf were there, they'd go "DOHOHOHOHOHOHOHO!!!"

  • scott: whinging indeed I

    sir ralph: do

    scott: do not

    sir ralph: you do

scott: I most certainly do not

sir ralph: you most certainly do

    LOL!!!

  • 7:20 "LEOKIMVIDEO WUZ 'ERE!"

  • @supergamerbros - Nice spot :)

  • your layout has changed alot and how come becuase your older videos got me inspired

  • @Whizzer1 - Trying to make it look more historically accurate. Google "copley hill" and look for photographs of the shed ;)

  • i've noticed 60163 at 4:37

is that a game like wheres wally instead where tornado lol

  • Twice he's appeared, both fairly unintentional...

    Where's Tornado next appearing...

  • I don't know

  • what number is Scott at 6:05 becuase it looks like its 60163 or 60823

  • I have Been Watching this series even before i joined youtube and I have Been Griped ever since. This Episode Is Fantatic, Keep Up The Great Work.

    ~Bear~

  • Is it the first episode when one of engines cursed? 2:39.

  • @SuperDooperVideoBoy - I wouldn't say "damn" is cursing...but yes, this is the first, and probably last time. Given the response to that simple word - which I will admit, never occurred to me could be taken badly, I'll not use it again.

  • finally episode 16! its a brill video, how do you do the steam?

  • @stellbrosproducts boil some water XD

  • @stellbrosproducts - Smoke and mirrors... :)

  • where can i get the ending music is brilliant

ps i love British railway series you inspired me to make a series

  • this may soud like an odd question, but what font do you do the titles in, cos want my comp entry to match. Also, what camera do you use again (i know you told me before but i forgot and couldn't find the comment again. also, do you use it for shooting outside and real trains.

  • @jamiegoddard4 - I think it's verdana Jamie, I'll have a check. The camera I use is a casio z70, a small camera to do a big job. Exquisite shots it does, for such a cheap one too.

  • are you going to do a episode with mallard because that might be intersting to see what sir ralph and mallard would be like.

  • Um, there seems to be a problem with the video.

  • Yes, I'm well aware of it. Awaiting responses from youtube.

  • can you have a look at my videos pleas and tell me what I am doing wrong because I'm not getting lots of views and ratings

  • Video now fixed.

  • not much V2's seemed to have double chimneys

  • @hwbpa3 - Only 6 I believe in BR days had double chimneys.

  • @simierski including the A4 pacific locomotives of course!

  • @simierski herbert being one of them

  • A wonderful episode good luck on episode 17!

  • at 4:38 TORNADO

    awesome episode

  • I learned quite a bit about steam technology in this episode, I never knew they could literally drop the fire..

Are you using all new train tracks, they seem a different colour (color for our US friends), or maybe my eyes need a fix.

  • I've slightly weathered the track, and there's a mixture of peco code 100 and hornby standard track.

Dropping the fire, I have seen done once, and it was rather pretty in a film maker's sense - knowing the damage it does to both track and engine, however....

  • when the new episode coming out??

  • 30th October :)

  • good, good :D

  • Wow! Amazing job! :D

  • how would an engine explode if none of the injecters worked?

  • The injectors put water in the boiler. Not enough water and the boiler will explode.

  • so does that mean the hole locomotive blows up?

  • If the boiler explodes,The smoke box and cab most likely will be took out by the blast

  • woah... sounds scary.

  • The plug's in the top of the boiler are the safety feature to stop this. If the water level is too low the heat makes them melt. This happens just before the boiler reaches the point of explosion and saves it. Regardless of this dropping the plugs is a serious matter as it disables the loco and causes alot of damage

  • as all the water in in the boler gos the pis would rise and then bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • sounds scary for a talking steam engine...

  • has alan got the green livery too?

  • @MrThomasAndWALLE - yes.

  • I like the new face style---

Features you can just put on and remove again for future use.

That saves the trouble of doing some image-flipping, eh?

  • @MIDIacefro - nice spot! and yes...much easier! :)

  • looks like you have a new smoke machine!!

    erm....4:43 tornado's in the background, if I recall that wasn't built until 2008? this is 1952 : D

and was that based on a true story?

cant wait until next episode, and I'll be entering that character compeition :D

    Bennymilk

  • Did you base Scott's water trouble off of what happened earlier this year with the Tornado on Top Gear?

  • @KingofTomedy - No, it's a real story that happened to Flying Scotsman.

  • Well, you did a great job! ;)

  • @KingofTomedy - Thank you. :)

  • Say Simon, I was wondering, since I'm doing redubs of the railway series, would you like to play the part of Flying Scotsman in my redub of 'Enterprising Engines'?

  • Amazing video - fantastic stuff !

  • awesome episode

  • Hows the character contest going?

  • Not too bad at all :) Lots of very good entries. It's going to be a hard competition to judge!

  • I can imagine so. By the way, is it possible to use the clay you used for the faces on O scale engines?

  • A brilliant episode Si! Well done.

The failing injectors suddenly returning reminds me of the top gear ep with Tornado, only they didn't have fish :P

Brilliant work- loved the new sheds, story and smoke effects, as well as Tornado's appearances.

  • 4:40 60163 Tornado!

  • I heard that one time TFS Was broken up for repair at the NRM.

  • Not broken up...taken apart (still is, currently, under overhaul).

  • I saw it recently (July) and it looks like they are making good progress. But they are desperatly short of funds so it may take a long time.

There was also a green class 20 in bits next to it.

  • did that really happen? great video

  • It did indeed!

  • Nicely Done, Simon! :D

Ignore any bad comments you get, your an awesome film maker.

Can't wait for the next episode!

    -Culdee Fell

  • 60163 Cameo ^__^

  • By the way, am I the only one who didn't get the "What would you do for an encore? Drop your fire!" that Nigel made afrom 2:36 to 2:41? ^^;

  • Hi Leon, well the fact was Scott Blew his safety valves in anger. Safety Valves blowing means an engine has buitl up to much pressure, and engine crews don't particular like doing it, as it's a waste of water and of all the firemans shovelling.

The comment made was very much a British saying, what would you do for an encore

  • it's actually hard to explain lol. It was the one line that really made me laugh when i watched it.

Dropping the fire is what would have happened should the fusible plugs had gone which the story explains.

Hope that slightly helps, not sure it does :S

  • burst a boiler and crack a smokebox that was just outstanding

    well done

    Simon

  • Cheers! One simon to another :)

  • 02:15 Nigals Funny. :)

  • Thanks :) That was thoroughly intended!

  • great episode!!!!!

  • Thanks very much! :)

  • well, this episode has a bit more humor in it, i like that :) great job on the smoke FX what do you use for it?

  • Smoke machine, overcranked in a few ways (don't try that at home kids!)

  • Im pretty sure something like really did happen to flying scotsman because i've got the book that tells you nearly everything about flying scotsman's history

  • You are absolutely right - any chance you can tell stuttering stevie that?

  • yes if i knew who he was

  • Amazing Episode Mate =D

  • Was that a tank engine Gresley N1 or and N2? I know that's not Nigel.

  • If you mean the one that said 'we know that' it's a N7

  • actually it's an N2 ;-)

  • Though I'm more into the episodes that advance the overall plot of the series, this was a lovely story to break in the new set and show off your new effects like the in-cab shots.

You also make good use of the limited space available for the "long distance travel" shots.

I might suggest that you can just have a character grunt instead of saying that a character grunted in the narration.

  • Thank you very much - and noted on the grunt comment, one always slips through the net!

  • Very nice effects simierski. I like the addition of the theme tune for Scott. Have you seen Flying Scotsmans' Australia Tour video?

  • I have that video

  • Yep, thats why I wanted to get a copy of that tune to use. I had an orchestra lay it for me (wonderfully done).

  • I like sir ralphs new couler! he looks so smart

  • 09:42 I would call that N7 'Simon'

  • Fantastic episode! I see you used some very interesting techniques when shooting the in-cab shots. Great as always,

    -Alex

  • Astounding Episode, really magnificent my friend.

    Best As Always

    Tom

  • Ceers Tom, here's hoping episode 17 is as good...

  • my mistake I mistook 0 for an 6 and is it me but isn't the driver and fireman the wrong way round isn't the driver supposed to be on the left and the fireman on the right

  • Not for a right hand drive machine - for a left hand drive engine (like FS was in its later years) the reversing screw and controls are the opposite way round. However, some engines like the A3s, A4s and A1s have their regulator controls replicated on both sides of the cab anyway. Most engines are LHD, in all fairness. The driver can be either side of the cab, but the fireman must be in the centre to shovel!

  • Really, every steam locomotive I've had the pleasure of being in the cab was right hand driven. I've never seen, or heard of, a left hand driven steam locomotive. (well, except for CPRR's Jubilee But that thing was weird because it had some kind of a screw rather then a Johnson bar) Is that a British thing, or was there others.

  • It depended on the practices of the particular railway. Here in NSW, Australia, we based our practices on the LNWR, but we converted most of our locomotives over to left-hand drive.

  • That was great Simierski, it really reminded me of a darker version of Thomas Goes Fishing. Really had me on the edge of me seat and was very humorous. I was ROTFL at the dialogue between Scott and Nigel

  • Thank you :)

  • I love this bit whinging is it indeed I do not, you do, I must certainly do not, you do

  • simierski have you noticed scotts cab number is tornado cabs number youn see it in 6.39

  • 60103 as opposed 60163 you'll find!

  • No its not tornado's number is 60163 Scotts is 60103 which is on the cab

  • I believe I said as much - that said, its a nice coincidence that the most famous pacific locomotive and the newest should share 4 out of 5 digits of their numbers in the same order!

  • Tornado in the background at 4.50

  • Yep, my mistake...should have been 60130 "kestrel"

  • Nice to see someone else is taking advantage of the smoke units. That was just one of the things that made this episode look so, professional.

One other note, that engine at 4:42 looked familiar, like I saw it on Top Gear once...

  • Indeed :) And on that bombshell...Thanks for watching, goodnight!
