I heard this on tv the other day. I had completely forgotten the song, and when it played (behind some people talking on a documentary) I just froze, I suddenly remembered hearing it as a child, and I didn't know if I felt happy or sad.
I just know that being so very simple it must be one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.
@RichardElden Have you listened to his voice properly and felt what he is singing, its heartfelt and beautiful. Ive heard a number of reditions of this song. In my opinion this is the best. Deeper voices eminate from a pain in the heart, drinking helps too ha ha... this is lovely
Chitty chitty bang bang was my favourite childhood film but I always thought that the child catcher was a woman who had an unfortunate tone of voice and face.
Wow. What can you say, incredible singer, actor, comedian, dancer... some people are just gifted. I'd implore any younger viewers to check out his material.
i own this movie and whenever i watch it i just love to hear this song... and i love singing along with all the songs hahaha i havent watch it in a while... im suprised i still remember all the words to these songs(: <3 I love Dick Van Dyke hahaha
given the fact that chitty-chitty bang bang and the james bond books were written by ian fleming, and given the fact that albert broccoli produced the movies based on chitty chitty bang bang and some of the james bond books, it seems that broccoli had an affection for fleming stuff. or else broccoli was only trying to make money by using fleming stuff. though chitty--- is not a disney movie, it seems like the kind of movie that disney often made.
=D ive never been as attached to a song as this one! Dick, though i dont know him, everytime i hear this its just like hes my father! I cry all the time to this song. It will be my favorite lullaby to sing to my little cousins, and i sing it to the point it drives my parents to insanity! I garauntee that as an adult this will be the lullaby i sing to my children.. no questions asked, because it just has such a fatherly feeling on me! chitty bang bang songs are just beautiful and genious!
They really don't make movies like this any more, but then if they did, we wouldn't truly appreciate them.
I absolutely love Dick Van Dyke and I freakin' love this song. It's one of the most soothing songs I have ever heard.
I hope Hollywood doesn't try and remake old classics like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, because if they end up like a remake of Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, there is no hope for remakes... But that's my opinion.
Ahhhhh...the days where actors had to be able to sing, dance, and actually act. Now they are just overrated and all glam; it is about how you look nowadays.
Great movie though. I would give anything to see a new movie that was as good as this. Enough with the pixar animation crap.
@jquinn25 Me too!! Since my dad was always away in another part of the country or completely in another country, I've always looked up to him. I used to watch his movies everyday and just sing and sing and sing. It makes me feel good inside.
@sliferproductions i believe it, and I'm 23... the songs aren't as good in movies... the Sherman Brothers ROCK! They did music for Mary Poppins and Bedknobs and Broomsticks too.
When i was younger me and my brother always used to fast forward over this song because it used to seem to last forever. But now i can appreciate how lovely it actually is. It's my favorite one from the film.(:
This is the kind of movie that should never be forgotten along with Annie and Mary Poppins. It's such a shame they dont make films like this anymore. ):

This is my most favorite song from Chitty. It's a lovely ballad and if I had kids I'd learn the words to sing it to them. I LOVE Chitty Chitty Bang Bang so much!
This is a beautiful song and he has the perfect voice for it. I loved him in this and mary poppins. infact i love him in diagnosis murder and (even if he is the villian) night in the museum (yesh i might get that wrong) Brilliant acter, Brilliant singer, Brilliant man.
I love this song so so much. My dad used to sing this to me when I was little to help me fall asleep it always worked. This song always makes me cry because itt's such a nice lovely song. I love Dick Van Diyke so much he has an amazing singing voice. He is a wonderful actor too. I like him in Mary Poppins as Bert. I like him in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as well. I wish I had this song on my phone and my I pod does anyone know where to download it?. Because I wiill always love this song. 100 stars.
the child catcher always made me laugh!! but I LOVE this song, and now I sing it too my son and it is the only thing that makes him sleep when he is over tired.... x x
This was the first film I ever saw at the cinema (when I was 5) and 2 things happened:
- Robert Helpmann's performance as the child-catcher is the most terrifying thing any child will ever see (and every child should see it);
- And Dick van Dyke's performance is the most wonderful portrayal of a father that any child could see (and every child should see it) (and one of the great voices of all time as well) so I love this song and anyone who doesn't is ...........( a fool)

the great dick van dyke singing his masterpiece! from the 1968 movie '' chitty chitty bang bang''. some of his finest work ever. the other being his performance in ''mary poppins'' [1963].
If I ever said I didn't have a favorite actor I'd be lying a lot....it's definitely Dick Van Dyke. Chitty and and Mary Poppins are my favorite movies he was in, mostly because of how his acting was and the characters he portrayed-carefree to the point of appearing irresponsible, but as Dick Van Dyke proves here he's a really kind and gentle person. I didn't like many sitcoms but the Dick Van Dyke Show I like a lot now...namely the walnut episode XD

Don't you wish Dick Van Dyke (and Julie Andrews) didn't get old?!! I mean I've seen both of them in recent films and they both are still some of the greatest actors out there. but you look at both of them and its sad when you know there potential and to see what they are reduced to.
Wow.... she's still been in a couple of things since then, thats good. you know, singing used to be a requierment to be in a movie. now they just have a band play instead of the actors. ah the good old days...
Im sorry but this song sounds creepy

Don't you wish Dick Van Dyke (and Julie Andrews) didn't get old?!! I mean I've seen both of them in recent films and they both are still some of the greatest actors out there. but you look at both of them and its sad when you know there potential and to see what they are reduced to.

i agree. They're great still, but can't do all the things they once could.
I'm so sad that Julie had to have surgery on her vocal chords... she can still sing though!

No way?!! Julie Andrews had surgery?!!
broadwaydude2378 3 years ago
yeah, back in 1997 or 98 she had surgery on her throat that effected her vocal chords.

Wow.... she's still been in a couple of things since then, thats good. you know, singing used to be a requierment to be in a movie. now they just have a band play instead of the actors. ah the good old days...
