OMG! When I FIRST saw this clip, I could NOT believe how utterly beautiful and THIN Aretha was here. I read that she got down to 125 lbs and she looks thinner than that on this clip. And her gown was so elegant, so tasteful, as was her jewelry and I love the hue and tint of her hair color back then. I've just never seen her bone thin before. Though it seems she's slimmed down ALOT recently. I wonder if she started smoking again?

I'd venture she's dropped close to 80-100 lbs. I wish I could take Aretha's lead...I smoke full flavored Kools 100s myself (for real) to keep MY weight down to a manageable level.

Actually that isn't Cissy in the background nor is it The Sweet Inspirations, The background vocals you hear in the back are the Sweethearts of Soul who sung with Aretha from 1971 to the 1990's and the vibrato voice you hear is Brenda, who is Aretha's cousin.

@happylarry Yes i do believe Cissy was one of the background singers for Respect, if not than it was Aretha's sister Carolyn's group, Aretha recorded Respect in 1967 and i believe Cissy and the Sweet Inspirations stop singing backup for Aretha in 1970 or 1971.

I watched this live performance and then searched and watched performances by other artist doing this song. No disrespect to Jimmy, Donna or the rest but Aretha just transformed this song in a weird emotional journey! She just has the ability to vocally transfer emotions like no other artist that I have heard. Amazing!

I disagree with that. No one sings with the soul and conviction as Aretha. And Ross is a nice singer and all but she doesn't do much for me emotionally. Aretha and Ross are two very different singers. Aretha was more about her voice and Ross use her glamour to get attention. Also i think Aretha was a very beautiful woman. In my opinion prettier than Ross. But Aretha wasn't about the glamour as Ross. But Ross is good but not my type of singer, if you know what i mean.
