I ate guinea pig when I worked in Peru. Also had iquana in Belize(bamboo chicken), tepescuintle in Guatemala(think giant swamp rat). GP is dry, iquana tastes like chicken tepe is like a greasy veal. Guinea pig makes sense since the Indians feed them on grass and weeds they gather by the road. So its free protein. Rat... If you raised it cleanly..OK. But just not much meat. Grasshoppers fried with chili and lime in Oaxaca-a vegetarian protein. Lobster is a scavenger of rotten fish.
@goodtimebob Thanks for the feedback. I'll have to try some of those! Personally I've never been a huge fan of Lobster myself, preferring another bottom feeding scavenger, the crab :D
I've had fried rat before, it really DOES taste like chicken! It was by mistake at a restaurant in New York. I became deathly ill. OMG - I thought I was going to die!!!
Gaging food abundance of western world and an 3rd world countries its not fair ,, cause most of population still live below poverty and at the bottom of food chain .. only corrupt official enjoy high life ..
Do rats have white meat or red meat? Because in this video, it looks like white meat but then that confuses me a bit cause they are mammals like cows and sheep.
@wattzboyz well mine were fried with greens and garlic some lemon or lime juice nt sure which and it came out tender and delicious kinda of like hmmm, i don't wanna say chicken but as tasty as a chicken and light taste of pork
actually doesn't look as appetising as roast guinea pig mmm that is tasty mostly south american though DO NOT order near yuccatan region your probobly being served dog there
not gonna lie had BBQd rat once... wasnt that great. They burned it so it was just bitter.. haha well this looks pretty bad too once the crispy skin is off...
hmmm biyter doesn't sound too good. I had heard the meat was sweet... I guess next time I'm in vietnam (or some other place where I'm offered it) I'll have to try a nibble.
@tinfamily In norway we eat guinea pigs. Not like.. normally, but it tastes good. Almost the same taste as rabbits. Of course we use them as pets as well =P I have never tastet guinea pig meat.
if you have the stomach for these, u can feed your family for mere pennies and keep them healthy. hell, just get a large cage of some sort and grow bunch of rats and other animals and simply eat them
If the dollar ever fails (not saying it will for sure), then who knows what we'll be willing to eat. If it comes down to starving or not, I'll start a veggie farm and if I have to, corn or rice raised vermin would be worth a try. Rather raise chickens tho! :D
I agree. i can pluck a chicken but not a rat ;D. I'm actually seriously thinking of growing my own fish in an aquarium just like they do in certain restaurants.
hi, i hav one question i ate at one vietnamese restaurant and the"chicken" had alot of hard gristle and from my experience chicken doesnt hav gristle so i wanted to knw wat meat could that hav possibly been any ideas????? i know that the vietnamese also cook dog meat but wat meat could hav that hard extra chewy unchewable stuff lol just inquiring.............
That's a good question. I know that chicken in the Philippines, as well as in China, Thailand, and Vietnam and Cambodia (places I've eaten Chicken) use chickens that taste a little different than ours. I've figured that it's because theirs are not pumped full of antibiotics and hormones like ours. I don't remember tons of gristle, though. Who knows what meat it was... You're still here to tell the story, though, so it can't be too bad! :)
I guess you usually eat chicken breast (and those type of 'boneless meat' part) but never a whole chicken.
Of course chicken have gristle! lots of gristle! like any other animal! coz that's the main thing to connect bone and muscle, bone and bone.
It can happen that the restaurant didn't prepare it well. but I'm pretty ok to see gristles in my food coz it's part of the meat. It's just like when you see small tea leaves floating in your tea.
ah..I was answering priscillajames's question.....probably posted it to you by mistake...
I'm also Chinese, so we are on the same boat! :D not just chinese, koreans, japanese and other asian countries are not much different. My roommate japanese girl and I used to chat about our food culture. Like what you've quoted "we eat all the nasty stuff" LOL

I guess, you can describe it that way if you want. Rat in this case turns out to be field rat. I was in Vietnam last week/week and a half ago and they said that they use tree rat and rats from the rice fields so they taste good, not the kind that eats from the garbage :)
I'd go for the plate of frog first. I've had that before. It was just meat (I guess it all is in the end, right?). I've had it a couple ways. Not something I would look for, but it's ok.
I saw rat & snake offered in Vietnam. Next time I'm there I'm going to make it a point to have them both.
Did the snake rice-wine thing this past week, which is different than the snake blood in wine thing, but the one I had is more for tourists I'm pretty sure. The one I had wasn't tasty. :P
