my favorite part about this sketch is thinking of how tricky it was for the two of them. of course they are best friends, and professionals, but i can picture stephen being a bit awkward about having to flirt with hugh.
*Giggles hystericly* So very very WRONG, but painfully hilarious, and because it's Stephen, strangely compelling... I adore QI, but I wish he had a chance to really flex his funnymuscles again!
@Phil4545 I believe it's Klothilde... old high german for "hlut" = strong or famous, "hilta" = fighter (and I am very sorry to admid that I've got this information from a very silly how-to-call-my-baby site...)
OMG that was BRILLIANT!! I was totally fooled up until they revealed it at the end... I was so shocked to find that they were really both getting it! And then shocked at the 'it started when I was four, with my Grandfather' part. This is one of my favourites now!
I love the double conceit in this. The two of them apparently talking about two different things provides endless laughs, but then upon reaching the end to discover they were on the same page all the time is just genius. The best comedy writing you'll ever see.
Geniuses! They need to work together again in comedy. SF recently said that they both realise the best is behind them. It can hardly get much better than this, I agree, but surely they're both still capable of writing and acting perfect comedy.
It is impossible to pick a favourite clip from "A bit of fry and Laurie" they are pure genius. I love the poetry sketch which has the classic line "I don't profess to know anything about poetry, I'm an English teacher not a homosexual". Actually I think I'll see if that's on here.
oh my god.. this is the funniest clip ive ever seen. sooo many moments are ludicrously funny! fry looking around the street, "when he sees strange men", "i picked it up in 1963 that and so much more besides", "a camel?!", "so often the way". hahahhaha! thank you so much
I cannot stop watching this sketch. It has introduced many things into my life--an extension of my miniscule knowledge of the French language, oubliettes, the only English archetype I was unfamiliar with, more about hyssop than I ever wanted to know, and "much else besides".
AHHH IT'S BRILLIANT. MY FRIEND & I HAVE MEMORIZED MOST OF IT AND WE PLAN TO RECITE THE MORE DISTURBING BITS IN PUBLIC... PERPETUALLY. But if anyone can assure me of the cat's exact name, I would be infinitely greatful.
I thought it was "Fluffhilda!" :) Um, is the lipsynch off when anybody else watches this? And is the cocktail supposed to match Fry's silk tie? And his hair?? Excellent sketch. Which season of Fry and Laurie is this bit from? Kara

On a slightly less intelligent note, THE CAT LICKED STEPHEN. Just. Yep. True story.
CharmsLithe 3 months ago
I like to think that the reason Stephen's character can communicate with his cat is that he's actually the Chesire Cat masquerading as a human.

Oh, Hugh, why do you always set yourself up to be raped by Stephen?
8thPrincessofHeart1 4 months ago 5
Oh lord. The hyssop. The hyssop makes all the difference in this sketch. I adore hyssop. Don't you?

I bought the Fry & Laurie box set about 2 years ago.... best $80 I ever spent. My brother and I still watch the show regularly. :)

I have a hat that's quite a bit like the one Stephen Fry has on in this sketch. Pity I bought it for my brother...

It's all too easy to hear Stephen's tone in this sketch quoting something like "There can BE no TRUE beauty without decay..."
And "I shall NEVER play the Dame.... :'( "
Hehehe get the feeling there was inspiration there. Brilliant.

"It is I..."
The face Stephen does while saying that always gives me giggles in my mouth, and "SO much else beside" in this sketch, of course.
It really smells Fry's writing all over this...
