  • Iain Stewart?

  • They should've checked to see if a caveman was under there. That would probably explain the farting ice. Right?

  • Who needs to learn how to cut firewood when you got freshwater to burn? XD?

  • Oh, not the global "warming" thing again...

  • in soviet russia lake burns you

  • melting permafrost ? uh wtf ? water temperature on the bottom of the lake got 4*C for whole year ( as long as water is liquid )

the methane is from rotting things in lake...

  • This is a load of crap. Methane comes out naturally from the oceans and into the air. Global warming is caused by the sun getting hotter and expanding. The caps on Mars and the moons of Saturn and Jupiter with liquid ice are melting faster than the earth's caps and they're further from the sun than we are. Don't buy into Al Gore's bullshit. There are over 9000 scientists with PHDs that aren't convinced of his theories.

  • this video DEFINENTLY just got me an A on my science project

  • 0:45 haha, face shot...need new eyebrows now?

  • wow, i wish our lake would do that :D

this is awesome.... just poke a hole into the ice and WOOOSH out comes methane :O

  • I used to work building landfills and all the garbage decomposing would cause big bubbles of methane gas to build up under the cap of plastics covering the landfill. Usually it would be lead to the burner through pipes but sometimes it would bubble up and be very flamable and dangerous.

  • no entiendo un culo...

  • The best we can do now is to curb the effects so that it mitigates the more negative consequences of global warming.

    Join the fight.

  • ... Harvest it?

Don't scream 'OH MY GAWD, GLOBAL WARMING GAS!'

Scream 'OH MY GAWD, ALTERNATIVE FUEL!'

The world throws lemons at your face, make lemonade.

  • Free fuel! Killer!

  • global warming hmm ill give two thumbs down on the person who came up with that and if u put this as spam or delete it that means u dont want me to have free speech for the declaration of independents.!

  • Dig it all up and then put a person in the center then use a lighter, =]

  • i would pay too see that, just one bug explosion

  • If humans don't clean up their act, they're hooped.

  • Go and study some physics please! With numbers like "2%" and "98%" you are not able to conclude anything! And is it volume-% or mass-%? Did you check? Atmospherical physics and chemistry is way more complicated than that! Water vapor and methane have completely different effects in different parts of the atmosphere on different wavelength of electromagnetic waves... and there is much more to it, but there's no space here. You can't just argue with two stupid numbers here.

  • Personally, I wouldn't mind if humans don't do anything about global warming. If that happens, then so many people will be killed by huge environmental changes that we will stop having such radical effects on the environment as a species. Once humans wipe themselves out, the planet can start to heal. I'll gladly give my life to help the process along.

  • did you do it yet - hypocrite?

  • Yeah, among with thousands and thousands of other species that co-exists with us in the earth you fucking asshole.

  • Human population reduced to near extinction will be the final outcome, whether we want it or not. Humans are incapable of changing their ways. They will pump out much more greenhouse gases flying around to attend all the global warming conferences than they will ever be able to decrease pumping out.

Although I am not looking forward to my death, I will at least die with the satisfaction that this species finally got what it deserved.

  • Bye bye human species (and most others)

  • People, leave the Earth alone. Let it do it's thing. It was fine before we were here to see it and panic over it. Use this as a science lesson. But quit this stuff about doing anything about it.

  • What the......? Let it do its thing? It was "doing its thing" before we came along and interfered with the earth "doing its thing"!

  • Interfere? If anything, the global warming people that want to do things are interfering. Ya, quit trying to change the natural things that the Earth does for the sake of 'global warming'.

  • Is this in Yakutia ?

  • Siberia

  • Thats cool

  • Very interesting.

    Thank you Bill for sending.

  • Wow!

  • Is burning Methane better than letting the gas escape in terms of a greenhouse effect? YES it would have CO2 gas likely from burning but I really do not know. Anybody know?

  • Methane is a greenhouse gas roughly 20 times as potent as CO2. So burning it, in theory, would reduce its global warming impact.

But it's impractical to do it. In Siberia alone we're talking about 9 million kilometers in which to find every deposit and control it before it is liberated. There isn't enough industrial capacity or energy in the world to accomplish something on that scale.

Which means there's no point mentioning the ecosystem damage a project like that would do.

  • That's "square kilometers."

The worst isn't mentioned in this video. There are also methane clathrate deposits buried shallowly on the continental shelves, barely held in place by pressure and low temperature. Global warming also means warmer ocean currents. A current warmer by a few degrees in the right place could start releasing those deposits.

Ocean methane deposits are much vaster than anything on land. If those start to let loose, it's going to get bad. Very bad.

  • Thanks for the answer. When I started rereading on Menthane on Earth about 6 months ago, it became clear. Methane is the aspect of GW that is without doubt tghe most critcle. Burning it as you said is not at all practical. Business a usual is NOT exceptable at all.

  • Pity such an amazing thing has such a dark story behind it. Oh well. Great video.

  • 25% of the land mass of the northern hemisphere is made of permafrost. From what I have read, it is between 1200 and 2200 feet thick. Could it possible for the whole permafrost to start on fire if global warming continues. The Bible says the earth will be consumed by fire. Could this Bible Prophesy be true? No matter how you look at it, if we do not make immediate changes in our energy sources, we are in big, big trouble. C. Jeff Dyrek. North Pole Expedition Leader 2005

  • The Bible also claims the universe is less than 7,000 years old, not to be taken seriously. There is also evidence that between previous ice ages that temperatures rose much higher than today and that large amounts of methane have been released into the atmosphere before, from beneath the sea aswell as from melting permafrost. Life on earth will survive.

  • Did anyone notices that chick got french fried by that shit at 0:46 that was awesome lol

  • Unless human nature changes very quickly and I don't think it will.

Greed of governments and coorporations that hold up lies and half truths to the masses, will each add a staw that will brake the back of a liveable planet as we know it. Who is responible for the permafrost melting? Those who ignore the truth because of greed, and those who know the the truth, and don't fight for it.

We live in an age where we need to fight not for our rights but for our childrens rights, and now, the poor,

  • We still donno with 100% if the warming climate is 'mainly' becuse of humans, sure we contributed but we have been on this planet for a realy short time compared do how old the planet is and im sure it has had alot more CO2 build up from the many years before we came along.

  • We the lay people may not know for 100% certain, agreed. If you were diagnosed by a lay person that you might be about to get very very sick, you may worry, if the same diagnosis came from the best doctors I think you would seek urgent attention. The head climate scientist at Nassa James Hansen was gagged from comment about his concerns,

  • he now speaks publically under the US freedom of information act, taking time off work, 1 or more days a week. Google [PDF]or html How to Talk to a Climate Skeptic

  • True, but our research and what people really know are two different things? possible. Not to say we shouldnt take heed to the words this great scientist says and others but to blaimly make humans the sole creator of this problem compared to how long the planet was able to sustaine life to how long we humans have been on this earth doesn't seem to fit with us tkaign the blaim.Of course i could be wrong and our planet may be able to change to sudden 'pests' and their doing such as the human race?

  • Freaky...

  • excellent, brilliant, iredible... my biology teacher told me to watch a video on methant escaping from under the ice and im glad i watched this one
