I don't know if its been mentioned before, but if you can't find any coal veins, you can always use wood to create charcoal, which can be used to make torches also :)

@TheDLaw230 monsters can't brake in to your house unless you leave the door open. they may be able to break down wooden doors in hard mode in the newest update. And monsters come out every night

Charcoal could actually work. There have been many times I spawned in an area with stone but no coal, so I simply got wood, made some tools (and saved some normal Wood) and got 8 stone. I put it on the crafting table and made a furnace. I used some wooden planks to smelt the spare Wood into Charcoal, which is a replacement for coal in everything it`s used for, including torches.

And if that still doesn't help, or you can't figure it out, in game you can open the graphics options and turn the clouds off, particles on low, graphics on fast, put it on max fps, and render distance on short or tiny. It's not a lot of fun playing like that, but it should at least help.

if you're running on a 64 bit OS, you can generate a command prompt executable program that will launch minecraft with the 64 bit java instead of the 32 bit which is it's default setting. Search how to run minecraft in 64 bit java on youtube. there are a couple of great tutorial vids on it that have exactly what you need to do to generate the command prompt program. You can even tell your computer how much of your RAM to give minecraft. Pretty cool stuff.

In my first day, I saw a zombie. In my first night, I survived a skeleton, 3 creepers, and 2 zombies (by running away of course (but I fought the skeleton)) without shelter and befor learning how to mine minerals and wood. :/ I almost peed my pants.
