i always foud rockin dopsey a bit too much lazy blues and redneck shit, but i love how he played here with nathan! nathan iis well good. for those who dont know much old time cajun yet (which kicks the shit out of the new electric redneck shite) also check out the balfa brothers
The 1st tune is that Rockin' Dopsie Sr. is on is referred to by Rockin Dopsie Jr's band as "Oh Bah Bah" (sp?) when they play it. The vocal is the same as Clifton Chenier's "Louisiana Two-Step" (not to be confused with the tune Dopsie Sr. called "Louisiana Two-Step", often recorded as "Bosco Stomp"), and Dopsie's accordion part is close to "Josephine Se Par Ma Femme". That song in turn was the basis for Paul Simon's "That Was Your Mother" featuring Dopsie Sr and his band.
oh please what is the name of the first tune with Rockin Dopsie Sr, i can't find it, it sounds a lille bit like "don't mess with my toot toot" but not exactly.
I'm half Irish, half Maltese and live in England. Don't know much about Cajun music or Acadians - but I know passion for music and for where you come from when I see it, and this is the genuine article. Vintage Stuff...
Dewey gives a nice watered down version of the Acadian expulsion. In reality, it was violent and very emotional with husbands and wives with children being separated and put on different ships with unknown destinations. Some were from New Brunswick and Isle St. Jean (Prince Edward Isle), not only Nouvelle Ecosse! (Nova Scotia). Le Grand Derangement (1755) was a great human tragedy that has proven the resilience of the Acadian descendents.
@timcomeau .....ALSO, As an 11th generation Acadian, Tim Comeau states for all Acadians, "Though we have been scattered, we KNOW where we're from!" Trade marked! :) VIVE L'ACADIE!!
I was fortunate enough to be a fiddle student of Dewey Balfa and I still am in mourning for his passing. He was perhaps the warmest most genuine person I've ever met. Back in the eighties he taught fiddle at the Augusta Heritage Festival in Elkins, WV near where I lived at the time. Great Video.
Pour Mr ou Mme Apententakel: If the language was in your hands it WOULD die a" sad, natural" death", apparently .
I did not say that you let your own language die... now imagine how cajuns feel, as you focus on the death of their's.... while what you said may be true, it is not is not a helpful comment ,really. It seemed insensitive because the video speaks of hope, of what is working. Cajuns already know of the difficulties. Look for the positive! Doom and gloom is not helping. I can say a number of true things about people. Many of this things would be purely painful for them to hear, and nothing else.
Man, it seems like it is going fast. My mom spoke cajun french, as did her siblings. None of their children speak, though, me included. It is sad indeed. I still love the music, though.
Except the French word is blonde, (or blond for masculine). They are actually old English words, adopted by the French. Anyway, great song whatever, lol.
you obviously have never spent much time in Louisiana. Arcadian and Creole French are to modern French like English on the British Isles is to American English.... similar but not the same
well it would have been useful if daveman's comment (to which I replied) had mentioned that the title was Arcadian or Creole French rather than just "French". Oh well, as you say I've never been to Louisiana.
This video helps me to recall so many happy memories of growing up in New Orleans. I hope everyone from South Louisiana who views this video is inspired to preserve the language and music.
preserve your culture!
