Sure their militia is part of the reason, but Switzerland doesn't have poverty and drug problems like we do...

I support the second amendment, but we should be focusing on other factors that contribute to crime instead of letting any ex convict have an AK47 right away.

@TheEnviroFriend Switzerland has an IMMENSE drug problem; it's the major problem facing that society today, as a matter of fact. The Swiss don't worry too much about drug users breaking into their homes or robbing their businesses because EVERYONE IS ARMED to the teeth. An armed society is a peaceful, polite society.

They fortified their borders plus they made a fortress of the high Alps; they had food and ammo enough up there for a century. Their secret service had informants in the Nazi high command. The Nazis knew it but couldn't find the "mole", so they dared not attack. The Swiss have the rights of referendum, recall and initiative, so the citizens control the State, unlike in the USA, where it's the other way round.

@dave97202 The Swiss military IS the citizenry. Only a few are "full-time" military, and those are trainers for the most part. Swiss men do two years' training at age 19, then several weeks a year of "refresher" training until they are 40 years old. The Swiss can recall anyone in government at any time and they have the guns to back that up with.

the swiss gov is way smart. 500,00? thats serious firepower even considering they only keep 50 rounds for their rifle at home. thats basically the ultimate defense mechanism from invasion. they also subsidise ammo and encourage competition. . .because it makes people better shooters. so if you have to train on/off for twelve years(till you reach 30) you'll be a pretty damned good shot.

Everyone talks about defending themselves but no one ever does. Wall street just ripped billions our of your pocket and what did you do? Nothing. Having spent significant time in Switzerland the reason the crime rate is low is not that every Swiss home has an army rifle. It is low because the standard of living is high, the social safety net solid, little poverty and a respect by all Swiss in the recognition that laws should be followed. The stupidity of the argument that these army rifles prevent crime is like saying that the can of unopened Raid keeps insects at bay.

I agree high standard of living, less poverty, more equal distribution of wealth etc have more effect on violent crime than everyone owning a gun. Conversely, a population that doesn't own guns also has little effect on violent crime.

A better argument might be that gun ownership affords the owner the possibility of self defense, whereas non gun ownership all but guarantees you of being a victim.

Not a good idea to bring a knife(or less) to a gunfight!
