2nd-- Accumulating stuff like Total Stunt points, Total Miles, Coins, finishing Circuit Mode... is what unlocks stuff.
There are cheat codes to open it all right away, but you have to do them every time you power on the N64, and they can be annoyingly hard to input. Needless to say, you really need a save file.
You can find those codes (and exactly what unlocks what) on game sites such as GameFAQS.
Oh my God! The music at the end is from Rush: The Rock right? On the Alcatraz track? Holy crap, I used to listen to that song every single time I played that game. :p

You only need 500,000 total stunt points, then this track is just there to select. At 1m points, you'll have the obstacle course.

very cool! i have this game but never got all the places to drive because of the "unlock" system...i really hated it.
