When I use to do coke a alot. I'd eventually wake up 2 days later, realizing I'd had this song on repeat the whole time. Those fine white lines will get ya, stay away from that shit.
jaco somehow manages to be the dominant force behind the music, yet is part of the group and keeps the sound of the band in unity. this is the toughest thing to do for any musician.
Pat DOES play harmonics in this song...look at 1:04-1:06 of this song. Pat does it throughout....Jaco isn't the only ome playing harmonics. Can't you tell a bass from a guitar harmonic?
Stop being so quick to deify Jaco folks and enjoy the music.
I would have to disagree. Something about this version really grabs me. Jaco and Pat along with Joni really works. One of my all time favorite songs for sure.
Here's a question: why'd Joni do that to her hair? Does she suffer from what all girls appear to suffer from: whatever kind of hair I have, I hate it and wish it was the other kind? Hence, women with straight hair complain that it's not curly, curly haired women bemoan not having straight hair, etc. This would make this God-like creature somewhat more like other women, so this reason I guess cannot apply. The reason must lie elsewhere because Joni is God!
What a shame Joni never entered X factor and American Idol. The tsunami of her huge genuine talent -- a real X factor -- would have hit Cowell, and maybe the shock would have killed him.
How is it possible to utilise the words Joni and X Factor in the same sentance ? ....Im confused? - This is simply one of the greatest songs ever performed/written? - A phrase I suspect I have never used while having to endure X Factor .......!!
I hope you understand that I used Joni Mitchell and X Factor in the same sentence, because I was saying X Factor fans are very stupid, and sad too, because of the great music they're missing.
Chills, chills and more chills! This song just kills! The singing, the bass, the guitar, the lyrics.... Truly a gift from God!
The structure of Joni's music is AMAZING... there truly is no other music like it.... Her phrasing is incredible... likewise the phrasing of the gutiar. And the bass line, maybe one of the best ever played! Thanks Joni, Jaco, Pat... (Larry Carlton), Don..... incredible!
Fascinating to me the way this lady evolved: over the years, she transitioned seamlessly from folk to jazz, and that unearthly soprano voice turned into this husky, smoky jazz voice. Tobacco helped: but few people sing jazz as well as Joni did.
Come on come over...as fast as you can. No sorry, don't know of any. I heard though that Jaco didn't make any videos of his songs with singing on them. He thought of his videos as educational more than anything else. Unless someone got it out of a live concert...sorry ST077E wish I could help. I like that song too.
She sings "this flame you put in this eskimo". I always thought she meant her state of mind, but well.. she has some Norwegian-Samean origins doesn't she? So she is referring to herself as well.
What is a God? Someone you worship, fear, obey? If that's so Americans worship the God of `the system' everyday while the system kills the world and feeds the system that Americans call patriotism.
i have been a bass player for over 25 years and i am very familiar with both jaco and joni's music and i have to say that this is some of jaco's finest playing. i have been listening to this for years and i am still struck by the stark beauty of the music and the loving way the music is treated by all of the musicians. i love jaco's jazz and fusion stuff as well but this is a testament to the fact that really understood music and how/how not to play. i wonder what he would be doing today.
so sad Bird. You tried. Such a waste, all that talent gone. Love this song, I graduated in 76, Hejira and Silk Degrees and The Royal Scam were the best that year, i could NEVER understand all the commotion over Frampton, one of the most over-rated albums of all time, imho.
I understand what you said about Frampton. But, how could sell a song like "Coyote"? Or "Amelia"? Those songs are so uncommercial, don't you think? If "Court and Spark" was her most successful album is because it was the most radio-friendly. It's a shame that she began to lose her commercial fortunes since then.
I met Jaco in New York City a short time before he died. His drinking and emotional problems were out of control; and I was one of the many people who tried to '12th step' him into our program; or some other kind of treatment. He wasn't interested.
We were all saddened but not too surprised when he died in FL. I'd personally witnessed a few confrontations he got into along Bleecker St, where there were some music venues, at that time.
unlike other songs, i find myself listening to this over and over. To me it's timeless. I can't express how this song makes me feel. Jaco and Pat are amazing aswell.
I've been intrigued for almost 30 years at how Jaco arrived at the choice of notes, the phrasing he played to take the song out. Begins with E E C D ... etc. Summing up is so beautiful it speaks and it soared. Very few players trancend the mundane, they are too enamored by the art form, or trying to impress, or securing their career status. There were moments here when Jaco went beyond that. Thanks for posting this video.
Song from the movie of my life! Who knew then that I would one day have drinks with Jaco, the greatest electric bass player to ever live!!!!! I love you JONI
Yeah, man, it is a LOVELY animal scene that makes you go "aaaaaaw, how cute!". By he way, I discovered JM's music thanks to this song, featured in the Martin Scorsese's film/concert/docummentary "THE LAST WALTZ"
Jaco truly lights up this composition on the bass. His sound and technique are continually fresh and visonary -- even listening to it 20 years later. The world of music deeply misses his genius.
Thanks for your reply enilegnave21. It must have been great to have been there. The coyote vid probably better at a live performance as background to the band. Great track and a great concert.
