  • Great !

  • I think she is divine...her sound is so warm....and despite any stylistic or techincal issues one may find we all have to celebrate the fact that there is a genuinely unique voice out there.

I do agree with the poster in regards to her "straight tone"...she uses this device (supposedly for interpretative purposes) frequently and I wish she wouldn't.

Nonetheless I do think she's marvelous and I think she could have a cross over career if she desired.

  • thank you thank you danielle, you are divine

  • There are probably several of us commenting here who have had to sing this aria. It's actually VERY difficult to make it sound even and simple. It's much harder to do well than it sounds. Brava Danielle.

  • Every time I watch opera clips on youtube, I realize what snobs opera singers are. I am a music theatre major and sing opera and music theatre and I have learned to not compare performers to anyone, even famous artists. It is disrespectful to constantly compare one artists' interpretation to anothers in this in this scathing fashion.

  • Whether Mozart can be sung with portamenti or not has been topic for debate lately as the use of variations have been; both sides bring reasons.

In my opinion portamenti are to be avoided, generally speaking (though -very rare- exceptions can be made if the singer feels the need to use one) because they add nothing to the beauty of Mozart's music

  • what a horrid scene! it looks like a submarine and it makes no sense: the fourth act MUST be a triumph of uncontrolled nature.

The aria is not badly sung, pronunciation is good too. Her lower register could be fuller and she doesn't control very well the pianos at the end of the piece. Way to go, Ms De Niese

  • thanks a lot.

  • I wish she didn't hold off on her vibrato for so long on "incoronar"! I have no idea as to whether that is right or wrong, but I thought it didn't sound right.

  • I wouldn't call myself an expert but I would agree with you. Let loose the vibrato!

  • Holy Diva! She is fantastic! She is one of those "once in a generation" singers in the class of Tebaldi, Freni, Caballe, Te Kanawa, Fleming. Her voice does remind me of Cotrubas in this role, however her breathing and her expression is pure Te Kanawa.

  • no, I dont think you should compare her to these singers... she is good, but I think her voice lacks something. personally, I like Bartoli's version better.

  • Please, don't mix Te Kanawa, Freni and Cotrubas in this. Those were very fine singers.

  • I love her, but I wouldn't put her in the same league as those you mentioned. Funny, though, that I was hearing a bit of Cotrubas in her voice myself. Must be the richness (for their voice type). I was almost too afraid of saying it lest it may offend some Cotrubas fanatics. I would actually compare her to Dessay for their magnetic stage presence and commitment to theatre.

  • in some moments she reminds me of cotrubas, a similar plaintiveness....

  • Very interesting...the voice teachers and coaches I have had would never allow their singers to sing a portamento in pretty much anything besides Puccini. I kind of like Danielle she does with this aria though.

  • can you point out exactly where she is using portamenti for those of us without expert ears?

  • I am sorry, Fustikia, but you have been misinformed, there most definitely are portimenti in Mozart's music. I am a vocal performance & education major & learned this song a year ago, doing the same portimenti she did, under direction from my teacher who is getting his doctorate in opera performance. =)

  • Yeah sure, but here the lady loses control. Of course she has the right to, since Susanna sings almost the whole opera.

  • She sing very well but but what she does is not for Mozart. In this music portamenti are absolutely forbiden...
