What I liked about Sim Earth was that you could leave things alone and it would keep evolving (most of the time) without player intervention. That's what I think is missing from Spore: the ability of the game to surprise you.

This game was the shit. I used to play it in the middle of the 90s for hours.

I love watching the world tear itself apart during a nuclear war, or churn up tons of volcanoes near cities, or turn a thriving planet into a lifeless snowball. I even remember how I used the monolith to uplift starfishes into sentience. Great times.
