  • Excuse me, i built yesterday a laser pointer (aixiz module and homemade heatsink) with a LG GH22NP20 22x DVD burner, that had LPC-815 open can diode. I drove it with a LM317 and with 300mA it died (now it emit a weak red light)... =( how you can drive a 20x LG LPC-815 diode with 600mA??

  • can u tell me everything i need for the laser b/c my step father has like 200 dvd and old computer

  • @P72OMAST3R

    Use google.

  • @P72OMAST3R Not just every dvd laser diode works like this it should be a diode from a dvd burner with more than 16x speed

  • eschucha y esrcribe la lettra correcta

  • co za asy

  • Darth Vader, watch out!

  • Can you tell me hom much mA (Milliampere) i need to power a dvdburner diode?

  • can i make a burning laser pointer with a laser diode from a dvd player?

  • now what about the stuff in the back round

  • @deathgod90210

    What back round? :|

  • @c4r0hv a wall a table a pictur

  • @deathgod90210 You meant Background, the things that are behind the burned paper :)

  • can you pump as much power as you want

  • Racist Laser...

  • @kingcoapa

Just FYI : Black is less reflective than white, so it will absorb more light, making it easier to light on fire burn a hole in.

But you probably just were sarcastic.

  • @the32bits No shit !!!, Einstein...

  • Sweet, I cant wait till I get a LOC to fix my dead homemade pointer.

  • this is starwars shit. haha. i love starwars

  • You have a steady hand =)

  • at what max. distance can this thing burn?

and could it burn something like a dark t.shirt?... :)

  • could i use it to remove warts

  • yah how can we build that?

  • its funny to think what hes seting on fire when he moves the cardbord.

  • Where can i get 1 of thoes or how can i build 1

  • @Silverblack218

    Google for dvd laser

  • @Silverblack218 go to a pc repair shop and ask em if they have any broken cd burners i had a bag full last time i asked em they only throw them out.just hope the lasers ok and suming else is wrong with em lol good luck

  • fajne ale pewnie trudne do zrobienia ;p te czesci

  • is dvd rw a dvd burner?

  • wow wow wow wow, i hope when i built it now it will work too

  • Wow! Make your own dominos!

  • violet lasers are the best for burning!

i made a 500mw red laser and also a 200mw violet and the violet burns much much better! it can burn everything! it burns wood faster than the red laser!!!!

  • tania i mocna LD ?? :D

  • on How many Volts or i dont know it works because i have one at home..

  • How much is powerfull DVD RW reader ina mw ??? tnx everybody

  • Somebody help me plz I just took out the laser diode out of an ibook g4 and when I connected the circuit, the laser diode didn't have a focus point

  • That's kind of normal? :| You need a lens to collimate the light.

  • @c4r0hv where do I get a lens that focuses good? will a cheap laser pointer lens work?

  • ebay. Look up 'laser module'

  • @c4r0hv colimate is a big word ,i usually just focus mine.perpendicular is a big word also.but thats nothing to do with this vid lol

  • @AstatineMime No shit Just watch the whole video. Dont just skip to the part where he burns. Read the subtitles too. Notice he said "collimating lenses" Ya did you put that there?

  • thanks for the help guys. It worked thanks

  • @AstatineMime do u have a lens

  • @AstatineMime Buy an 'aixiz module' google it. Then put the diode in there, find out how to first, then it will make a 'laser'.

  • Laser smoke, don't breath that ;)

  • does it only burns through black colored stuff?

  • White stuff would reflect the beam

  • @Zeesquad no but it burns better

  • pcb=printed circuit board

  • @bazengao Yes and lol means laugh out loud...

  • i was just translating for thoose who didn't know its meaning!...jackass

  • @bazengao Who doesnt know what pcb is?

  • KIDS!!!and ppl who dont understand anything about electronics!asshole!

  • Meh I want a 25kW one from Sandia National Labs. That puppy can burn a 1.5" hole through 2" steel plate in a couple seconds. Just need a 200kW 3-phase generator to run it.

  • @fuhQ6969 no problem got that here if you now get that diodes we can build it together and maybe steal money from a bank with it:)

  • nice :)

Might be (one of) the first light saber,...in hundred years, people will look at "the primitive light saber"

  • 5mw you can get blinded with any laser you can find

  • what mw do u need to be blinded

  • anything over 5mw will cause your retna to burn even though you can notice it... and it cant be reversed. a 20mw can blind a person in less than 1/100 of a second

  • @bamsk8ter1291 hhaha woops lol iv shined my 150 mw in my brothers eyes from accros the room soo many times :S

  • haha

  • That´s just not true..

  • Maybe tell us why you think so, huh?

  • I will. The red light is the weakest light of the visivel spectrum and a 20mw red won´t do much to your eyes, even if you shine it for 1 sec. In kipkays give away he gave two lasers, 100mw green ( with safety goggles) and a 20mw blu-ray with no protection. As you know the UV light is the strongest so why didn´t he give googles for the blu-ray that´s like a 100mw red?

  • Power is power and if you have X mW then it doesn't matter wtah the color is, power is always X mW. I don't understand how you can say that UV is the strongest or red is the weakest. If you mean the spectral sensitivity (V-lambda), it says only how the light is visible, but has nothing to do with how eye can be damaged with given wavelength. Infrared is not visible but it can blind you just like visible light.

  • 100mW of green is exactly five times more that 20mW of violet, color and eve sensitivity just doesn't matter when you're talking about eye damage. That's why it's better to use safety googles for green if you have to choose between googles for green and violet. And by the way, safety googles are protection against reflected and scattered light, not against pointing a laser directly into your eye! Even a few mW of collimated, coherent light can damage eyes, there's no doubt about it.

  • hum.. makes sense but if tha´s true I should have ireversable eye damage.. and I must say I´m was a bit worry when I read your post cuz I alwys thought that It takes a good amount of mw to burn your retina..

  • The eye damage depends on many things and I'm not saying that 5mW laser will always blind you, but it may blind you. That depends on exposure time, beam shape and divergence and other conditions that affectr your eyes. The worst case is when you are in dark (pupil of the eye is wide open) and have your eyes focused to infinity, then if a well collimated beam hit your eye the light will be focused to very small point and much light will pass thru your eye's pupil.

  • What may be interesting for you, your eye may be damaged by laser and you may not even be aware of it! Google for "blind spot". Laser light pointed into eye can make something like this in other areas of retina than that place where the natural blind spot is. You will not see a black point there because human brain is smart and it get's used to it really quickly, but you still have your eye damaged and you can't actually see in that area!

  • Ok now I´m worry thanks alot! lol

Will an optician be able to see the eye damage??

  • Optician is a guy who makes glasses or works with other optics. Did you mean an oculist? :) I don't know if an oculist will see the eye damage, but I think he will be able to check if there's something wrong with your eyes in some way. But If I were you, I would not go there if you don't feel that there's something wrong and your eyes doesn't hurt. Just keep in mind that it's not so hard to get blind (more or less) with lasers and be more careful next time.

  • Yes oculist :)

    thanks for the advise

  • all i have is a 52x cd burner and a dvd player will any of these work

  • hahahahha your 52x will be over double the power thats gonna be a beast! but no the dvd player is infared so you cant see the dot but it will cause you to go blind very fast. a camera can notice infared. take a tv remote and press the power button. dont see anything? now do it while recording it on a laptop or camera. it should glow purple

  • (",) Cool thing to do. I always been wondered if there is any way to see te IR light.

THX U SO VERY MUCH for telling howto. :)

//Best Regards from SWEDEN, Patrik "PH" Larsson

  • You need a DVD Burner with 8x.

  • Comment removed

  • nice work man on the collimator and the heat sink

  • Isn´t 600mA too much for the diode even with heatsink??

  • where did you get the driver?

  • I made it.

  • how much would it cost to make one of thoughs

  • PUT YOUR HAND ON IT :D!!!!

  • I can't. I tried twice and no hand left :P

  • IMPOSSIBLEE!! then how are you typing?? lol

  • I'm using a keyboard. You know, that flat thing against the monitor :P

  • Hey will a portable CD player work or is it to weak??? And if it isn't what do I do???

  • CD player laser diode is a few mW max - far too low power.

  • what is he burning?

  • what about the range of this? can it still burn objects within 50 meters?

  • The power would be less but it still should burn after focusing.

  • someone please help, i have a laser diode from a 40x cd rom driver and i really dont know what to do to make it work, any help?

  • You cant use a CD ROM it has to be a DVD Burner

  • yes.

first you don't need the cd diode.

Only DVD burner diodes works and 16X

Next you have to buy some other components.

If you find the diode communicate me to tll you the others.

  • if you aimed it at white plastic, say a soda cap, would it eventually burn through or would the cap reflect too much light to melt?

  • It would reflect too much light.

  • hey i want to make a lasrer using multiple diodes about 3 but i dont know what i need or how to set it up etc and i have very little money so i want to know where i can get diodes and parts i need and if heat sinks are needed etc and whats recomemded thanks if any one can hlp

  • The cheapest way to obtain laser diodes are DVD writers. Heatsinks are needed. Combining laser beams, especially for burning purposes is very hard and expensive.

  • ok thanks but for the multiple diode part i just meant that i was going just wire 3 seperate diodes to one button and put those three on a mount so the beams dont meet but are close together in a triangle so it can be used and a possible weapon (though very bad on at that for now) and ignite stuff quicker and burn a larger area

  • hola amigo - that's all I understand :P

  • just put it in the google translator. i understand spanish.

he says that he wants to make a laser stuff with your help.

  • done, thanks for advice and translation :)

  • by far the best silent video I have ever seen... ;p

  • @nook3y nah some of the early laurel and hardy were better

  • what is the voltage are you using in this diode?

  • No idea. Probably it's something around 3V. The diode is powered by constant current source so I don't care what the voltage is.

  • Comment removed

  • Hey, does the diode have to be from a Burner?

or is it possible to use a diode from a DvD player.

  • Comment removed

  • where did you get the collimator lens?

  • Its from industrial low power laser module. You can find something like this on ebay for a few bucks.

  • he get steady hands bcuz he no jack off..

    hahahahah

  • how do you make it?!?!?!

  • you have very steady hands

  • what are you burning holes in ... rubber?

  • No, it's not rubber. It's kind of hard black sponge.

  • oh well nice vid im going to make one

  • I have pushed my laser to 160 mA, but I am not going to push it to higher power, because then life of the diode will be shorter. My DVD burner model was GSA-4167B. This is my first laser, so I dont want to destroy it :)

  • 400-500 mW ? They don't put such a powerful diodes in LG DVD burners...I also have a laser with LG diode, mine looks better, it has a short can and a small lens inside and it's definitely not 400mW...I would be surprised if it is 200mW.

  • It depends on the writing speed and also a drive model. But you're right, that power was only my prediction based on a myth that 16x DVD-RW diodes puts out 250mW of light @250mA. Now I know that's not true. I measured similar module to that one on the video, the same laser diode @600mA with acrylic collimating lens. It was putting out 240mW, so I suppose that the diode alone can give something around 300mW. For comparison, 16x DVD-RW diode @250mA with acrylic lens was 140mW.

  • the material is black

  • i got an old dvd itook both dvd lasers and now how do i make one/

  • it has to be a dvd burner diode

  • Only one of diodes can be used. One of them is IR, the other one is super bright red. You need this bright red to make a laser.

  • bother are lasers, just you can't see the IR one without a camera

  • nice sound:))

    ok this thing are creepy:|

    Its cool!!!

  • there iz a place that sells laser flashlights that burn, but they are super expensive!, at least for me!

  • they r way too much

  • HAHA, lol :P Why not? I can do better things @home - check my website (the link in this vid information)...

  • Yes you can!

  • I have one laser diode but i cant acchive focus, and turns very HOT. I try some lences, and focus it alittle the collimator do this funtion?

  • The collimator IS a lens actually.

  • hey could you make a DVD player laser pointer?

  • impressive^^

  • What do you have connected for power, the regular 2 AA 3V?

  • Haha, no :P I've used a buck converter working in current source mode and powered from ATX power supply (12V). Chcek my other video named "New laser diode driver".

  • So this is without any extra lenses, just extracted from the drive?

  • No, the diode is mounted in a low power laser module casing with collimator. That casing is then mounted on a heatsink.

  • very good

  • Thanks ^^

  • does it hurt

  • No. I can't feel it on my skin at all until I paint the skin with a black marker pen - it causes that more of the light is absorbed and then I feel heat on my skin.

  • Does DVD player diodes work as a substitute for DVD burner diodes? thanx in advance

  • No. Player diodes has the same wavelength but less power.

  • where's the instruction to make it?

  • It looks like this one is simple, 1.rip open dv burner 2. attatch 2 AAs to the pins

  • Attaching 2 AA cells directly to the diode is a very bad idea. You have absolutely no control of the power. For powering laser diodes I'm using a few different current regulated power supplies that I made myself.

  • wat does this mean (diode current 600mA)?

  • Heh :) It means that intensity of the electric current flowing through the diode is 600mA.

  • lol i still dont get it :(

explain it to me in a way that i can understand

    wat does mA stand for

  • do u know Ohms law? U=R*I. it means that if you power a resistor (like a Laser diode) with a spcific voltage, a current of --- mA go through it.

  • no im not in college yet lol..

  • You need to apply a voltage (battery) that pushes electric current through a load (laser diode). The laser diode needs this electrric current to start the lasing and produce light. The unit of current is ampere shortened to A.

1 mA means 1 milli ampere, which means 1/1000 of an ampere. (Just like 1 millimetre is 1/1000 of a metre )

  • wow laser technology is so confusing :\

has anyone ever made their own house hold laser pointer that can burn things?

    like from scrap

  • mercanaries3 you are a fake! Get lost!

  • wtf a fake what you retard

  • welcome to 2009...and i could say that since 2002

  • you need to either expand your english or learn it

cuz you certainly are failing in communicating with me

  • "wow laser technology is so confusing :\

has anyone ever made their own house hold laser pointer that can burn things?

    like from scrap"

welcome to 2009...and i could say that since 2002

you're right man, english is sooo hard.

  • you people are crazy.

  • Felicitaciones eres un genio, saludos desde Venezuela

  • jestem pod wrażeniem niezle daje :D
