I was a 19-yr old kid when I saw Marie sing this live on her and Donnie's show. Great memories and still today one of my favorite songs. A poignant song and memory. The words and meaning I've thought of a million times over the course of my life; they are symbolic of most in our lives that have been mere illusions.
Both are good, but the original, as unpolished as she was, had a raw, energetic "I have to prove myself" quality to it. After all, she had a lot to live up to and a LOT was expected of her. She certainly surpassed my expectations, and that first album still sounds fresh after 35 years.
It should be noted that she's the only Osmond who has been nominated for a Grammy, and she was nominated twice that year-"Best new artist," and "Country Song of the year."
With respect, not entirely accurate. Merrill as a solo has also received 2 Grammy noms, and won 2 People's Choice Awards. Marie rec'd 2 Grammy noms in 1974, & in 1989 received an Academy of Country Music nom for Top Female Vocalist. Another fun fact, The Osmonds and Donny Osmond still hold a music industry world record: the most gold records (11)earned in one year by a recording artist (something not even The Beatles or Michael Jackson has accomplished). They still hold that record today.
You're welcome, Mikal :) And to be honest, I hadn't even known that until about a couple of months ago when I read it in an article about Merrill, so I was surprised, too. No doubt about it, lots of talent to go around in that family!
God, i was in love with her when i was 12 and still am. It's the longest i've ever loved anybody - lol. And her voice is just as beautiful. Am i sane? lo, Mikey xx
God I always loved her voice. What a Beautiful girl and singer too.

Thanks for correcting me. I was not aware that Merrill had 2 Grammy noms.
I've heard his solo work, and it's really good.

I can hear the difference in Marie's voice on this 1990's version. Marie's voice was starting to mature into the beautiful voice she has today.

Nevermind. I see it's already up and it's not the Neil Young song. Good tune, though.
Holdenon3 3 years ago
Are my eyes deceiving me or did she cover Neil Young's "Like A Hurricane"? Whoa! Any chance of getting that track up? :D
Holdenon3 3 years ago
i like this one better its less from her nose and more from the voice. her voice has matured a great deal. good going marie.
