If this song was on VH3 you would have had another Gary record. No doubt about it some of eddies best work. The new record also has some of eddies best work.
Always looked at VHIII as being the EVH solo album. He controlled it so much. He played bass on most tracks and drums on some. From that perspective it's a good album but not a great VH album. I wish they would have done one more with Cherone. VHIII is just as good as Chickenfoot if not arguably better. True EVH fans know Ed was playing great then. The live versions are better than the CD. You got to admit it's better than the '04 Greatest hits songs and tour.
I remember when "That's Why I Love You" leaked, or was released on the Internet, just before this album came out. I listened to that song hundreds of times and couldn't wait for this album. I was disappointed with it at the time, but I've come to appreciate it.
Before this album, Sam and Dave wrote the lyrics to the music. I read in an article that for this album, Ed wrote some of the music (maybe all) after Gary wrote the lyrics or poems. Ed said he was so inspired by Gary's writing.
Love this song! This would have made the Van Halen 3 CD so much better. Went to their concert in 98 and it was awesome. Too bad Warner Brothers did not give them a chance at a 2nd CD. If the songs would have been more like this, it would have sold well!!!
I am a HUGE Van Halen fan, one of the biggest who's ever lived. And i was very reluctant to buy this record, but I'm glad that i did. Eddie's playing is spot on, and some of the best that I've ever heard. People are too critical on Gary Cherone. He had to fill the shoes of DAVID LEE ROTH and SAMMY HAGAR. Not everyone can do it, and he did, quite well. Do yourselves a favor: buy the album, give it a few listens, and you'll find that you've been missing out on a great album by the best band ever
The only reason why i would critisize VH III is simply because it sounds like a rushed album, the quality of the recording could've been alot better, especially the recordings of Gary's singing, he's hardly heard in some of them - compare the tracks with and Extreme track. Apart from that the music is great.
@supermandave78 your talking to the person who is in a band unlike you i practice every day unlike you i do a bunch of cover songs unlike you so please stay the FUCK OUT OF MY LIFE YOU PUTA
@supermandave78 I see you are defending gary at all costs.. roth was still a billion times better singer the gary was in VH.. and sammy was a trillion times better then gary
Too many have been critical of VH III and need to really listen to it. Granted How Many Say I was not the best choice for the album. But Eddie's guitar playing on III is amazing on this disc. GREAT stuff!
gary's voice was terrible on this album thats why it was a flop lets be honest here. Maybe if he tried to sound like like himself instead of trying so hard to sound like Roth or Hagar things might of been different.
Eddie and Alex's hatred for Sammy overshadowed their better judgment. True, this does have a Hagar as RokDAWG stated previously but it would have been A LOT bette than half the other cuts on the album, especially 'How Many Say I'
@escamoter22 I think it might not have made the album because it has such a "Sammy vibe"...it seems like Eddie & Alex were against that so much back then. I wish this would've at least been a bonus tune
Can anyone tell me what music video the clips are from that show Eddie wearing what looks like a Jester's hat? The whole band is in a white/blue room/castle looking thing, lol. I would like to see the video if I could find it. Thanks!
@romwidoly I believe you're referring to "Without You" off of Van Halen III w/Gary Cherone on lead vocals. You shouldn't have a problem finding it on youtube.
This video is actually rather well put together. It put across a feel of transition which the band went through i think.
On the song, i think its the best cherone song they ever made, and it deserved to be on the release. Though im glad places like this are able to allow us fans a chance to hear it. :D
The truth is, Warner threatened to drop VH if they kept Gary, due to the lousy sales of the record. It wasn't Eddie's dysfunctions or Al's opinions... it's a matter of the bottom line. Warner has been ripping off Van Halen since they started, but the money cow keeps the boys hooked. I mean, isn't it a CRIME that Warner didn't insist on documenting their first tour? Warner Brothers sucks!!!!
gary cherone, i like the guy but he just wasnt right for van halen and he stuck out like a sore thumb. i personally liked vh3 but i think they should of went with a singer a lil more seasoned
@cincyrocked What makes you think i;m a hack? You have no idea who I am or what I sound like. You're just a Gary Cherone Fan-Boy, and an idiot. Now piss off....
I love VH3, think it's a totally under-rated album. Too many fans wanted the same old VH thing, this album is different. Shame fans weren't prepared to give them more time. I really think this line up could have been a major success.
Great track as well, and this didn't make the final cut!!!!!
I bet if these jokers finished the work they were doing with Gary in 1999, they would have totally been a much more active band, and I bet the material they shelved was awesome. I mean they had an entire tracklist of a dozen or so working titles. What a shame. Being a Van Halen fan from 1999-2011 is the most frustrating thing in the entire world.
Being a vh fan from 99 to 11 was the "most frustrating thing in the world?" Apparently, you have no life to speak of. The band owes you fucking nothing. Not Ed, not Al, not Mike, Not Gary.
Without You and Fire In The Hole are my 2 favorite VH 3 songs. But this one is better than any of the rest of them. I wonder why they didn't release it?
It's a shame all the Van Halen fans & media didn't get behind Gary and the band. thank god this lineup didnt workout cant stand gary seen them on this tour gary is just to big a queer for van halen guess he was trying to be like dave but it came off as to gay for the fans
if i remember correctly this song was intended for the Van Halen 3 album but was pulled off at the last minute cos it sounded too much like old school Van Halen. i believe the instrumental primary and ballot or the bullet was included instead (eddie especially was trying real hard to experiment with the band's musically direction on this album. that and the singer fiasco within the band stiffled the album's sales!)
I think the only problem with VH3 was that Gary's lyrics were a bit ridiculous and too political. Sammy was able to do more meaningful lyrics on Balance, but he still kept that good-time rock feel to it like in The Seventh Seal, Can't Stop Lovin You, and Take Me Back. If anything, they should have learned that people wanted more feel-good type of lyrics and make more albums that would have solidified Gary as a part of the band.
@jakemk21 Thing is, doesn't always go that way as I'm sure you well know. WIth this album came a more...serious, sophisticated type of playing from Eddie, and the lyrics soon followed suit from Gary. I actually love VH3, but its not for everyone.
Very good song , its messed up that it was taken off the album for Josephina . I read somewhere that the second album was a for sure plantinum seller due to the grammy award winning producers eddie chose to produce the second album . In the artical it had said that it wiil nerver see release . : (
VHIII Is very underrated, actually Van Halen is very underrated. I'm 22 and every one I know says Van Halen is untalented and crap. Van Halen has it over 99.5% of all new crap out there.
This is a great song. Love Eddie's playing on this and it should have been on VH III. I must admit I was not fond of Gary Cherone's vocals on this album...not that he was all terrible for there are worst out there but just seemed it didn't fit VH quite right...he's work with Extreme was ok.
I loved the song From Afar on VH III. Don't hear many people talked about that song. I thought it was eerie, a dark song...something VH doesn't do often.
I agree this would've been better than Ballet Or the Bullet. I wish the guys had told the record company to screw themselves and stuck with Gary, for at least one more album. I also think they shouldn't have strayed so far from their core sound with VH 3, but can respect their artistry. It was a huge gamble and it didn't pay off, but then again, there was probably no way they were going to win. Most folks didn't want to see a third singer for VH. Ah well.
Van Halen is Van Halen as long as it's Eddie, Alex, and MICHAEL. Van Halen died the day Eddie decided it was bloodline only featuring which ever singer he was going out on a cash grab with at the moment.
Wow, you faggots still watch the VH 3 vids although you say you despise it... If you dont like it go fuck yourself, go whack off to your 1984 DLR posters...
VH III was a great album. Eddie never goes wrong. I have the tablature to all VH songs, and I actually enjoy playing the VH III stuff best. It is more complex and more acoustic as weell. Eddie knows what he is doing at all times. VH III is a more serious type of rock vs Dave and Sammy times . Thats what I think. All VH times rocked.
I'd agree...I think his playing on this album is an absolute masterclass in rhythm guitar, the number of riffs he packs into Without You alone is staggering...I always thought the music and lyrics to this album were sophisticated and experimental, which is no bad thing
Thank you! Someone who agrees that at least the music was aimed toward a higher degree of sophistication. I'm board with the sophmoric party lyrics from a group in their 50s.
Sammy backs you up here. In a Chickenfoot interview, he said that Ed's hard to sing to because he crams in so much music that he leaves no room for the singer.
@ihuergo69 I agree, and it's sad that people were so quick to shoot it down. I think they sounded more like a band on this album than ever. I love all versions of VH, but musically speaking this album really just floored me
@RokDAWG1 you could put David Coverdale,Steve Perry or whomever..VHIII would of flopped anyway because fans werem and hyped DLR was back in the band and then him and EVH rammed egos and left the fans with "blue balls" If EVH put his pride aside he should of made the VHIII album his own solo side project and it would of saved him his face. Since VHIII it was downhill till DLR cameback. Now its the calm before the storm
@rb7magnetico It's NOT VH without Mikey...Dave and Eddie are NOT VH
I do agree that maybe it shouldn't have been called "Van Halen" anything, it should have been given another band name, because THEY did sound like a band here
@RokDAWG1 Of course it isnt' VH without MA. He was a good bass player and back up vocalist. Him getting booted was EVH strategy until DLR back. DLR &EVH wanted to get rid of MA since the Fair Warning album. They wanted Billy Sheehan. Its a good article
1. Gery Cherone. I don't know what was up with the way he sang, but his voice was strained and shrill.
2. Eddie. He made some poor production choices, such as the out of tune bits on "Without You". Experimentation was a good idea, but he needed a producer like Rick Rubin to reign in the ideas.
3. The drum sounds were awful. Playng was fine.
4. Dirth of good melodies. This song is a great example. Chorus melody was ultra lame.
Yes agree with everything there , cherone voice was abysmal on , he sings a hell of a lot better with extreme
Prod was terrible thats 4 sure , but id say ou812 is worse , its a terrible sounding album Evh is no producer thats 4 sure , how do professionals make it so bad????
Good song but it still wldnt had saved 3, maybe when it was properly produced it cld have been the best song on the cd , Gary voice just is so strained ??? does everyone agree?? but never as much in extreme
I'm as huge a VH as there is....and I threw this CD out about a year after I bought it. I don't even consider it part of the VH catalouge. An abomination to say the least.
i honestly think ou812 is worse , and balence isnt that much better , thought it had a a few good moments , do enjoy dirty water dog , without u , one i want , r all pretty good , the rest is avg , what didnt u like about it? cherone voice is terrible , and the songs r toooo long
continued - therefore the TWILY on CD is a true rarity, but I don't know for a fact that they are on some of the initial Japanese imports, but they may have been promotional as well.
I have a scan of the promotional cd to show what it looks like, but not sure how to post it here on YouTube.
ya man...I've always wondered what would have happened if gary gave it another shot...i think he's the perfect blend of dave and sammy...no ego - all entertainment...
good song.....the tour rocked with cherone as they pulled alot of tunes out of the vault, however the album bombed. I think Cherone would have been better suited as a replacement in Queen
I can kind of feel a Hagar (For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge to be specific) feel to this song. Like it reminds me of Top of the world and idk what else. But it sounds sammy-ish to me.
Dude this is an awesome song....thanks for the upload!!. Was it their stupid manager to advise on excluding this song from the album?? This is a VH trademark cool song. It definitely could have pulled the album sales up....way up.
I actually enjoy Josephina; if I were in charge of the track list, I'd have left out Ballot Or The Bullet and thrown That's Why I Love You in as the final track in order to bring the entire album full-circle, as well as end it on a high note. I always like it when a band saves it's best for last, although IMO VHIII is a decent record nonetheless.
actually this song is pretty damn good, why replace it with josephina, which is not too bad a song anyway. there could have put "thats why i love you" as a bonus track on the album.
VH3 was a great album, it just couldn't stand the test against DLR or the Red Rocker. Any true VH has to agree, i am a fan of all of their music, as different as it is. Can't stand how some people start ripping Sam saying he sucks, come on, he can outsing Dave anyday, facts are facts, but DLR fits VH better. This song is killer and would of done very well. It's a true testament that VH has sould millions and millions of albums with three singers. Fucking A!!!
Thanks for the history lesson, you seem like a real strong passionate fan. I made points about all aspects of this band and their three singers and you respond like you did, your cool!! Oh, by the way thanks for the spell check, do me a favor could you spell check this for me. YOUR A FUCKING DICKHEADED LOSER!!!!
I also STILL would love to hear Sammy sing the tracks off VH3... That would be sweet. Imagine Sammy doing some of those tracks??? How good would they be!
If this song was on VH3 you would have had another Gary record. No doubt about it some of eddies best work. The new record also has some of eddies best work.

Why the hell couldn't they have scratched the pathetic "how many say I" for this song. This song is catchy and may have caught on.

Rockywaves73 1 year ago

This song would have been HUGE had it been on the VH III album.

Sophistication and Van Halen don't mix. They should have re-named the band at that point.

Wow, you faggots still watch the VH 3 vids although you say you despise it... If you dont like it go fuck yourself, go whack off to your 1984 DLR posters...
blasty5150 2 years ago
VH III was a great album. Eddie never goes wrong. I have the tablature to all VH songs, and I actually enjoy playing the VH III stuff best. It is more complex and more acoustic as weell. Eddie knows what he is doing at all times. VH III is a more serious type of rock vs Dave and Sammy times . Thats what I think. All VH times rocked.
ihuergo69 2 years ago 27
I'd agree...I think his playing on this album is an absolute masterclass in rhythm guitar, the number of riffs he packs into Without You alone is staggering...I always thought the music and lyrics to this album were sophisticated and experimental, which is no bad thing

Thank you! Someone who agrees that at least the music was aimed toward a higher degree of sophistication. I'm board with the sophmoric party lyrics from a group in their 50s.

Sammy backs you up here. In a Chickenfoot interview, he said that Ed's hard to sing to because he crams in so much music that he leaves no room for the singer.
jimmyboy131 1 year ago
@ihuergo69 I agree, and it's sad that people were so quick to shoot it down. I think they sounded more like a band on this album than ever. I love all versions of VH, but musically speaking this album really just floored me
RokDAWG1 1 year ago
@RokDAWG1 you could put David Coverdale,Steve Perry or whomever..VHIII would of flopped anyway because fans werem and hyped DLR was back in the band and then him and EVH rammed egos and left the fans with "blue balls" If EVH put his pride aside he should of made the VHIII album his own solo side project and it would of saved him his face. Since VHIII it was downhill till DLR cameback. Now its the calm before the storm
rb7magnetico 1 year ago
@rb7magnetico It's NOT VH without Mikey...Dave and Eddie are NOT VH
I do agree that maybe it shouldn't have been called "Van Halen" anything, it should have been given another band name, because THEY did sound like a band here
RokDAWG1 1 year ago
@RokDAWG1 Of course it isnt' VH without MA. He was a good bass player and back up vocalist. Him getting booted was EVH strategy until DLR back. DLR &EVH wanted to get rid of MA since the Fair Warning album. They wanted Billy Sheehan. Its a good article

There are a few reasons why Van Halen 3 sucked.
Chorus melody was ultra lame.
samwestonpotter 2 years ago
Yes agree with everything there , cherone voice was abysmal on , he sings a hell of a lot better with extreme
Prod was terrible thats 4 sure , but id say ou812 is worse , its a terrible sounding album Evh is no producer thats 4 sure , how do professionals make it so bad????
downincognito76 2 years ago
I partially agree to your opinion.
Mr. samwestonpotter.
1. his voice was strained and shrill. .nod in agreement
2. It served as a reference.
3. Playing was fine ..agree
4. This song has good melodies,I think..
stillawaystogo 2 years ago
Good song but it still wldnt had saved 3, maybe when it was properly produced it cld have been the best song on the cd , Gary voice just is so strained ??? does everyone agree?? but never as much in extreme
downincognito76 2 years ago
I'm as huge a VH as there is....and I threw this CD out about a year after I bought it. I don't even consider it part of the VH catalouge. An abomination to say the least.

i honestly think ou812 is worse , and balence isnt that much better , thought it had a a few good moments , do enjoy dirty water dog , without u , one i want , r all pretty good , the rest is avg , what didnt u like about it? cherone voice is terrible , and the songs r toooo long

a3dhingr 2 years ago
@sphen5150 The song was finished. But VH had their doubts, and it was replaced by "Josephina" at the very last minute, which caused a delay.
Mrpretpakket 1 year ago
@sphen5150 could you download this on the internet or lime wire or anything
marccoolguy 1 year ago
@sphen5150 Not 100% correct. This song is on the Japanese Import Version of VHIII.
Just like Crossing Over is on the Japanese Import Version of Balance and Mississippi Power on DLR's YFLM.
Soxpert 1 year ago
@Soxpert I am looking at the back covers pfsome japanese imports and "thats why i love you" is not listed." do you have this cd?
actionarslan 1 year ago
@actionarslan
I have a copy of the promotional CD and it is on there.
There were a few promo copies of VH3 sent out to people at WB
and so on. They just had black and white covers on them with the
WB logo on the back with security service stamped by it. On the
spine it said Van Halen III. That's Why I love you was on those
copies instead of Josephina.
It is my understanding that the first run of Japanese Imports had
it on them before being switched to Josephina.
Soxpert 1 year ago 2
@actionarslan
continued - therefore the TWILY on CD is a true rarity, but I don't know for a fact that they are on some of the initial Japanese imports, but they may have been promotional as well.
I have a scan of the promotional cd to show what it looks like, but not sure how to post it here on YouTube.
Hope that helps!

I don't know why the hell they picked 'Josephina' over this song... This song should've been the lead single!!!
redrocker1055 2 years ago
@redrocker1055
