That's very common. They're testing if it can handle extreme environments. Every car manufacturer does it. Opposite extreme environments is all so necessary like Death Valley. They have to do this before they unleash a road car. Especially McLaren :)

It's not supposed to be a direct successor to the F1. It's a direct rival to the Gallardo/F430/911 etc. so McLaren can maybe actualy make some money from car production with a lower cost, higher production volume model.
