I don't remember how old I was when I first saw "A Day At The Races" (or was it "A Night At The Opera) and I remember never having seen anything so funny in my young life up to then; this scene is classic!
@Protectobot No one cares about California much anymore, sorry. Speaking of them, for some odd reason my WV plate on my first car there was YUR 510, and when I moved to Alaska it was the exact same. I saw one once that said 50 VVAT, 18 RGTR, and UR QUTE.
This is the best classic of all time, comedy like this doesn't exist in todays society, we are subjected to profanity in order to make it funny today, NOTICE THESE GUYS DIDN'T HAVE TO CURSE IN ORDER TO MAKE SOMEONE PEE THEMSELVES......
@ajsilvestro I agree. Nowadays, someone says something extremely offensive and there's hysterical laughter in the background. This kind of humor is clean and simple. It's not meant to offend anyone, but it has me rolling on the floor laughing. I love clean, simple humor.
OMG I used to stay up late when i was young to watch these guys...They were truly masters of comedy. This scene is one of my favorites. Maybe it's the switch of Groucho being the sucker, idk but just the timing & the look on his face every time he realizes he has to buy another book..... priceless!!!!! Love it!!!!
I grew up near to Hollywood Park Race Track ...actually the track gamblers always follow all these "tricks" ...all these "books".. and guides ... It always astounded me that with all the knowledge these track rummies had- they always lost the same amount of cash at the window as those who bet a hunch
Oh this shit is so fucking good. Now I'm only young but with all the crap on TV today people fail to appreciate stuff as good as this and stuff likr the honeymooners too. Much more entertaining than today's try hard actors. I laughed so much at this when it was on TCM movies yesterday my head was killing me.
@allinjim123 C'mon mate, there is plenty of great comedy being produced today, you just have to know where to find it. In fact there has always been great comedy, it never went away, you just have more rubbish to sift through in order to find it. Now I absoluteley love the Marx Bros., but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate comedy from all the decades since, that kind of pidgeon-holing is just as close-minded as someone who only likes stuff from the past ten years.
@accamsug Actually come to think of it I think there are a lot of good stand up comedians these days and I enjoy that a lot. I guess you could even say that it was stand up back then too because there was a lot of shows that were taped live in front of an audience like the honeymooners.
Every time I see this scene it reminds me of the times my Mother and my Aunt use to take us kids for an afternoon at the racetrack. There was a guy there selling ice cream with a cart just like Chico's. He use to go around yelling in an Italian accent, "Eye-ca Cream, Eye-ca Cream, getta your Eye-ca cream!".
Brilliant Scene between them i loved the lines I don't want it getting around that i don't have a breeders guide and my most best friends don't even know i don't have a breeders guide lol
probably the BEST Marx Brothers bit of all time, the 'contract' in A Night at the Opera is 2nd

This is way funnier than modern "humor" which is full of insults and sometimes racism. I just saw this on TV.

One thing that is odd about this scene is that Groucho plays such an sucker. Chico is usually playing a character that is dumber than Groucho.
