I would have to agree that the irony is huge. But the Nobel Peace Prize is more of an idealistic award. What we have to remember is that the President didn't ask for the award and probably didn't want it. He could have turned it down but then he would look like an ass. So instead he goes to Europe to explain some wars are just, like WW2 and the one in Afghanistan when you weigh the consequences. I would ask that you watch the entire speech if you haven't, it's somewhat compelling.

The nobel peace prize is awarded to the person who, and i quote from the will of Alfred Nobel, "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses," Barack Obama is the leader of the worlds most powerful army and current commander of 2 large scale full combat armies. His whole speech is compelling but a speech alone does not qualify one for the laureate.
