My Dad flew on Air/Sea rescue missions over the North Sea and never realized he was in a "shooting war" until the time he found an allied pilot floating in a dingy and radioed his position. Sometimes it was a race to see who'd get there first, an ASR launch or an E-boat. This time some Me110s showed up too, so they climbed into the clouds where they could hide. Just as the launch got close, an Me110 blew the dingy out of the water.

You had a lot of fire comming from the bomber and the front of the engine (from the attacking plane) was the worst part of the plane to get hit at... Did they shoot the bombers rear gunner out??
