The Victory lakes intermediate band is playing this for UIL and i memorized the saxophone fingerings for it and it was so sad my band director started crying during the recording we listend to.
our Christmas concert is called Heavens's Light. This song is played at the very beginning of it. Moments of when the high schoolers (im at a school where that junior high and high school is together) had a heaven's light moment. We've been rehearsing it forever, so it should be really good!
Tomorrow, I am playing in an honors band that is playing this song. The conductor was the band director for the girl (the one who died in the house fire) that this song is about. He told us the story and
@PenguinsFanatic87 isn't he Georgia tech or state or something the other band director of my school said he meet the person who payed for the making of it and wasn't it a car crash?
@alecburn He is a Georgia State director, and he was also the director of the honors band that i just participated in. She died in a house fire, where it is presumed that a cigarette started the fire, killing her and her parents. I got to talk to him for a while, and he loved talking about the girl he taught through middle and high school. Very sad, especially since she was under his direction for so long. You can also find the death report on the internet (kind of morbid though).
This song is so beautiful... judging from the comments, I can see what it is about. It's really a beautiful piece and wish I knew the whole story... I recently lost one of my friends not too long ago. I love this piece. It's so beautiful.
our band play this last year and this peice has such a bueatiful sound. i loved the flute solo the clarinet solo and when the french horns All of it left some of our judges in awe that a middle school band could play something like this that good. very good job on this peice steven reineke
I am an oboe player and We played this at our last concert. Knowing the story behind it and then meeting the composer was truly amazing for me because I love playing but with our band we r all freashmen in our band and we sounder like seinors we played this song to a T. Even though no one in our band passed away, i felt like I was playing for my great grandfather who never go to hear me play befor he passed away so i started tearing up as we played, brcause i felt he was there. I <3 this song. <3
I had a concert this spring on my grandmothers birthday. She passed away over a year ago. I got the privilage to play the Clarinet solos. I will always remember this song.
My band played this song for contest this year along with Flight of Eagles and Alamo. We received a 1 in contest and every time we played it we cryed. We have such talented clarinet and flute playes to play the solos in this piece and it really moved everyone in our band. I am so honered to have played this song.
My best friend's father just passed away today from cancer. I immediately came to this song and it gives me hope that he's in a better place. Truly a beautiful composition.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Pham. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers <3
I loved playing this song. I played it on 2nd clarinet all by myself and it was so beautiful to play and express the feelings the song brings. But, I agree with @vee19921 that this version is too fast.
I'm in complete agreement with you about it being too fast. Never played this one myself, but my high school played it a few years after I left and I got to listen and it was one of those special musical moments. The melody is beautiful, and playing so fast doesn't give you enough time to appreciate the musicality of the piece.
Wow. The three who disliked this are not nice people lol. XD this is freaking beautiful ha ha. how could you dislike this? it blows me away yo. This song makes me cry for God's sake-_-=)
:') we are playing this song in our band for a concert coming up and when we heard the story behind it we all cried even our band director was tearing up because she was part of the band and somehow we are all connected as band members :') i am proud to say tht this is the most amazing peice we have ever played!
My band is playing this song for our competition. Its is a beautiful song with a sad story behind it. I cried when my director told us the story. Ever since, my band has played the song sooo much more emotionally
We are playing this peice this year...be just thought it was a really beautiful song and blew it off then our director told us the story behind it...ive never seen or heard my band play a song with as much emotion as this one...it really changed the way we sounded on this song.
I could never play this piece without crying halfway in the middle of it. Playing this piece for someone you lost is possibly one of the most emotional experiences you can half.
Without a doubt… the most beautiful piece I've ever heard. No other piece has moved me in such a way as to ACTUALLY get a tear out of my… but this is different. :')
My band is playing this song. We have no trumpets or french horns, so the clarinets have the extra parts. After hearing the story behind this song, I feel honored that we get to play such a beautiful song. A member of our band community recently passed away, perhaps that's why our band director chose it. I hope we do it justice.
see, the problem with this song is the fact that its never gonna sound this beautiful if you are in a band that can't keep their intonation and tone quality steady. aside from that its gorgeous
I play French Horn, and this song really makes me want to cry. We were going to play it in our Spring Concert if we can get it right. This truly is beautiful.
I always felt great playing this song, it's just so peaceful, if only band didn't change after middle school, back when it was just fun. I'm definitely going to pick up my alto saxophone again one day.
It's not about the difficulty. Yes, it's a seemingly easy piece to play but not anyone can just throw that in front of their band and expect to hear what I just heard.
@MeAshesFlyingBy Playing eighth, quarter, and half notes is hard? Wow... low standards in your school I assume. I'm in ninth grade. This was the easiest piece of our school. Try playing Toboggan Ride. Now that's a challenge.
@jjd896 Obviously your band does not know what good musicianship is. It is often said that the hardest songs to play are slow and melodic. This is mostly true. A faster song like toboggan Ride (which I have played) has a lot of notes, and possibly more challenging rhythms. However, a slow song like "Heaven's Light" (which I have also played) is much more difficult because precision is key. Any mistake comes out 100 times, where in a fast song, the notes are quick, and not noticed.

@smileyfan16, the story is very sad! we played this for concert season last year, and my band director's best friend died a few days before, and she cried the whole time we played this song at competition! its so sad and beautiful at the same time!
I was in the band that had this song composed because one of the most brilliant clarinet players had past away in a house fire. My band director also made a award in her memory and I got it that year... Needless to say this song really touches my heart. I loved this song so much. We played this last year (my last year of jr high) fo UIL contest and we got State Honor Band Championship whith this song and we also played this song for our End of the Year Concert if rememberace of one of the School Board Members who died the past year. RIP Mrs. Martinez our community will surely remember you.
Thiis Song is SO Awsomeee.!... ii always feel like crying during the flute solo ;( CUZ ITS SO BEAUTIFUL!!n to thiink she was so young when she died..only a yr older than meee.. R.i.P.Holly <l3
@SkyclanDensetsu I don't mean to say this harshly or meanly, but it's spelled Baritone. I am the principle Baritone/Euphonium in my colleges top band. I've played this before, it's gorgeous, and I know the boring-ness of the Baritone line.
This song was composed in memory of a wonderful band student who had died in a car crash. She was always nice and everyone loved her. They all were devasted when she died, so they asked a composer to make a song in her honor. after they played it, everyone was crying. it really is the most beautiful song I've ever had the privelage to play.
@KoolioCaity08 Not to sound rude, but this was writing for the Evans High School Band in Evans Georgia, where I went to school. Holly was killed in a house fire the night before a concert.
During the ending of the song the flute and clarinet repeat her name back and forth because her best friend played the flute.
this is the most beautiful band song that i have ever played but the thing is the percussion part is so boring :( the other perclanders wouldnt let me off the glock's and the cymbals so i basically had nothing to do the entire time :(
My band is is going to play this at Savannah this year. I love this song so much. My band director knows the band director of the girl they made this song for. *cries* My part's not very hard and it's almost just half notes (first chair baratone), but I still put in all the feeling I can into this song. I <3 it so much.
@SkyclanDensetsu AMY?!?! omgg heyy hahah i saw ur comment and i was like, wow shes goin to savannah too?! but then i relized it was you! hahah its christina btw (:
@SkyclanDensetsu I don't mean to say this harshly or meanly, but it's spelled Baritone. I am the principle Baritone/Euphonium in my colleges top band. I've played this before, it's gorgeous, and I know the boring-ness of the Baritone line.

we played this b/c its so beautiful when you slow it down.. (even now its beautiful but way better when u slow it down). we played it at graduation in memory of my best friend that died 2 weeks before graduation. i was going to ask her out =*( and now i will never get that chance T__T
OMG i love this soooong sooo much its my favorite band piece ever in history!!! I love it i even played at my concert at my school i fell in love with it when i first heard it!! I wanted to cry! bt i didnt lol.
@WarriorsProphecy i agree , we played it in my school, and did you know that this piece was written about a girl who died in a fire, and Steven Reneike inspired himself of the girl's school.
Heaven's Light is such a beautiful piece! Im from Lincoln County WV and my band played this a few years ago. Everytime I hear this song it leaves me speechless its so pretty and I cry just about everytime I hear it.
yes the girls name was holly spivey she was a great clarinet player from my high school, evans high school in evans ga. our directors miss her so much. we have an award in her name bc she was that special to the band.
@tandonthehawaiian haha!! hey so i was listen to some music and looking at comments..and i was like..hey..our band did that..same place too..oh wait!! it's tandon!!!
@LemonLime42414 lol we did already but i did not get to go because i failed so now i cant go to the trip at the end of the year but anyway it is a very peaty peace lol im in a practice room course i failed but my bad is playing it right now
the story to this song is so sad. apparently a girl named holly (who was in band) died in a fire with her parents. everytime we play this song i get really sad.
Did your director ever tell you the story behind it that's written in the score? Apparantly, a girl in band died in an accident or something, and the band all got together and commissioned Reineke to compose this in her memory.
Mmm...this song :) I love it! My high school wind ensemble is playing this for UIL. It's truly amazing. Espescially if you know the story behind it :) Steven Reineke, you did a marvelous job.
I have the clarinet solo in this song :D Its easy, but its my first solo. Im a sophomore, My second year as firstchair. We never played songs with clrinet solos but i finally get one! Yippee.
Very Emotional. :(
Steven Reineke's pieces sure has great emotions to show, and you can feel it. :(

This song was composed in memory of a wonderful band student who had died in a car crash. She was always nice and everyone loved her. They all were devasted when she died, so they asked a composer to make a song in her honor. after they played it, everyone was crying. it really is the most beautiful song I've ever had the privelage to play.

@KoolioCaity08 Actually, she died in a fire... I was part of the band that debuted this song for the first time.
blackdragon2875 1 year ago
@blackdragon2875 oh. my band teacher told us it was a car crash
KoolioCaity08 1 year ago
@KoolioCaity08 Not to sound rude, but this was writing for the Evans High School Band in Evans Georgia, where I went to school. Holly was killed in a house fire the night before a concert.
During the ending of the song the flute and clarinet repeat her name back and forth because her best friend played the flute.

@sarahismadeofawesome i'm sorry. I was told she was killed in a car crash by my teacher. Sorry, if he gave me wrong information

this is the most beautiful band song that i have ever played but the thing is the percussion part is so boring :( the other perclanders wouldnt let me off the glock's and the cymbals so i basically had nothing to do the entire time :(

My band is is going to play this at Savannah this year. I love this song so much. My band director knows the band director of the girl they made this song for. *cries* My part's not very hard and it's almost just half notes (first chair baratone), but I still put in all the feeling I can into this song. I <3 it so much.

amymoore121212 2 years ago
Did your director ever tell you the story behind it that's written in the score? Apparantly, a girl in band died in an accident or something, and the band all got together and commissioned Reineke to compose this in her memory.
