Holy crap man, I rarely prefer covers over the originals but WOW! Dead serious, I think your voice and that high octave are more ear-pleasing & work with the song better than Steve's did!
When you are singing this are you in the upper Tenor range? Like G4,A4,B4, C5? If so, can I (a baritone) sing this with the same tone as you? I am still a rookie myself so I can't sound like this for some reason.
@psychgoth Hello. Great question. I am in a hard "mix" meaning I combine chest with head to get a blend of the two. It is tricky but it is not too hard to do. And yes, a baritone can do it as well.
how on earth do you just train yourself to mix voice like that? im currently 18 and not sure how to go about this, id love to expand my range but not sure how to go about it, if i can end up sounding this clear whilst high id be happy
I just wanted to remind those folks who want Keith to sing "heavier" or with "more power" that everyone has a different voice. What you might think of as singing softly or quietly can sound completely different if another singer did it.
Ricki did an amazing rendition of this song here and really showcases his incredible control. Journey songs are notoriously tough to sing because the vocals are right around the passagio (vocal break) area for most male singers.
@muskysnax - almost. Power is not about your voice type but a matter of support and tonality.
Rick has complete control of his voice but Speech Level Singing but its very nature gives you thin tonality. SLS does not teach singing with heavy compression. Its all about medium compression & light edge phonation. The more you can compress the cords w/o tension & put lots of air in the vocal tract, the bigger and fuller your voice sounds.
I say this only from a technique POV, nothing against Rick.
@RocktheStageNYC Sorry but you are incorrect. I have studied with Seth for a while. "Thin Tonality" is not a part of SLS. The pedagogy itself is rooted in Bel Canto, which is in no way thin or light edged. I can use SLS and sing opera as well as a classically trained Bel Canto singer. It is about balance and a lot of compression actually.
@RickiKeith - What I meant is that most of the male singers I hear that have studied SLS sound thin compared to non-SLS trained singers. SLS does not stress a heavy phonation - its more light mix. Sitting around going "Mum Mum Mum" is not going to give you a thick and powerful G4.
Like I said I didn't mean to slog your voice. It just lacks "meat" but that may simply be just a product of your "light" speaking voice and can't be helped.
Sorry - you're good, but after reading your comments on Arnel singing this song you seemed to know what you were doing. You're good, but I expected better. You're tuning is excellent, but there just seems to be a lack of power in your voice - it's too quiet. I'm not as good as you - my voice isn't anywhere near that high, but you could do with trying to make your voice sound a bit more powerful.
@chandledorf - I am singing in a mixed voice, part chest part head giving a "blend" I call it "blending". I have trained my voice to be one connected range so there is no break or difference in tone or quality. Thanks for the comment!
@aaronmendenhall Yeah thanks! I was wanting to really sustain those high "B's" Perry is famous for with some vibrato and control, for most singers a very difficult maneuver to accomplish. Thanks and glad you enjoyed it! I will upload more soon.
@RickiKeith Cool! Since you are a guitarist as well Ricki, can you please clear my confusion on which is a C5 on a standard guitar? Is it the 13th fret, B string? (2nd string?) I seem to get confused by this all the time...thanks!
absolutely fantastic cover Ricki!!! I really liked it! I have a question - do you have naturally high voice around the range of Perry or did you train yourself to reach those ranges?

When I sing this song I go into head voice for the above A4 notes. But put the sound in my throat so to speak while still having a nasally sound.

your voice is a little to soft for this song. You need more power. but you did a good job reaching those high notes...cheers !
