  • that is a chewed up piston

  • thats typical excat same thing happened to my buddys mxz 800 the whole skirt of the piston went missing and found it all in the crank....

  • who ever asked if it's a 2 stroke should not be allowed around snowmobiles.lol

  • I'd still be happy for $50.

Do you do any bottom-end rotax rebuilds?

How long does it take to do a total rebuild?

  • @iamchevyman5 happy for 50???? what?

I ended up using this engine for parts. Bought a parts sled for 200 and used the engine out of it.

  • LOL yes there was a flaw ive rebuilt a tonn a these and never saw a skirt break like that usualy the pop a chunk off the top of piston

  • metal fatigue pistons should have been changed after 30 hours

  • what is wrong with splitting the crankcase open? I have never worked on a 2 stroke before, but with V8s and V12s removing the crankshaft (or in the case of those just removing the oil pan would allow you enough access) is no problem at all.

  • i say take out the crank shaft, clean it with straight gas, put them back together, get two new pistons, and put them back all together, cuase thats what i did with my sled alot of times haha, just saying

  • Whew....she's a goner, alright....

  • prolly ran out of gas

  • it is normal from "bombard"=johnson+evinrude engines... bad quality material used and sold expencive... better buy yamaha ,wery good quality...

  • @jigibao Bombardier were one of the best engines made, they just dont hold up if you abuse them....like running them out of oil.

(I have a 1990 seadoo gt that has never had a carb rebuild or any rebuild, and it still runs like a top, over 20 years old)

Polaris have the worst engines. Yamaha isnt too far behind. Yamaha engines are heavy and gutless for their weight. So far the best manufacturer of marine engines is Honda, followed by Mercury, then evinrude/johnson, then yamaha

  • @birks95 i worked 12jears on outboard engines and this is not an isue of oil!! this is poor quality made in mexico.. nothing more nothing else, and yamahas are far better quality materials used.!!!

  • @jigibao FYI ROTAX engines are made in AUSTRIA, not mexico.

and you should know he merc 2003-2004 four stroke engines used yamaha powerheads. We used the 75 hp in a rental company, and guess what? within 7 years EVERY powerhead seized/blew in the #3 cylinder. It wasnt because of lack of oil or lack of maintenance. I should know, I serviced them. also, yamaha engines use old obsolete technology and require internal zincs, unlike mercs.

  • @jigibao lol, rotax probably make or at least did make the best 2 stroke engines in the world. what do you think powered biaggi's and reggiani's rsw aprillias? i think they powered the last of the rsw's in gp's 110hp 250 v twins. im not sure if they were still powering recent apprilas but they defintly did througfhout the ninetys. they also powered many other gp bikes over the years such as waddon, cotton, aprillia, armstrong ect ect. made in austria and very very fast. alss rapid shifter karts

  • Is it 2 stroke?

  • @ScottieNiven well yeah...

  • @ScottieNiven yea its out of a snowmobile

  • no... its cheaper to go ahead and pull a few more bolts and just split the case.. clean it all out nice.. slap it back together, get some new pistons and go with it!!! I've done it on several different two stroke engines.. I just don't understand why you would take it down this far and just give up so close to finishing it??? idk.

  • @calholli oviesly hes got money

  • @calholli thank you just what i was thinking

  • what sled did that moter come out of I'm looing for the thermostat for a 1980 ski-doo Everest 464E L/C Electro

  • someone basically overreved the motor, and the wrist pin bearings took a dump on that cylinder.

  • Question: I pretty much have the same motor... Its in a 1999 seadoo speedster.... was running fine last summer... After sitting for 6 months (winter) Went to get it started today and the right motor wouldn't turn over... Any ideas?

Should I pull off the head? or try to somehow manually turn it over?

    What could be the reason?

  • i'll bet money that your rings rusted right to the cylinder. take off the head and tap LIGHTLY on each piston to free it up. those seadoos are subject to a lot of moisture. at most you're looking at new rings and getting your cylinders honed

  • You said a flaw?? I think about 9000 r.p.m. and no oil would do it...

  • it's just a little over 7000. and yea, the guy that gave me the engine most likely ran it out of oil, that's why the piston to cylinder wall clearence was way out of spec and shattered the skirt

  • junk

  • that motor is put inside the formula MX's early 1990's

  • 1985-1995

  • no its not a flaw in the piston somebody ran it without and coolent that is how that happend cause that happend to me last year

  • cheaper and accually easy to split the crank case apart and clean it up then rebuild time.

  • i agree with you 300 tops for entire motor rebuild plus time so really not as bad as a 1500 dollar crate motro

  • I am going to start a rebuild on my polaris tomarrow.

  • Alot of times when pistons break like that if it's not due to oiling trouble, is piston skirt sidewall clearence gets to great over the years and the skirt slaps the jug, and you get this.Of course theres other causes but thie clearence issue is the most common as piston skirt wears down. You should be able to pick up a new 462 cheap enough on the vnitage form sections or a sled wreckers in running condition. Cheers, IC.

  • no no thats not what i meant it was directed to that guy that said skirts break all the time nothing against you dude

  • ohhhh, k

  • ive never seen a broken skirt, asshole

  • yeah, fuck you too

  • STICK THE HEADS IN YOURE BUM BUM.

  • wow you talk like a fuckin idiot... skirts break all the time, dont sound like the master or anything.

  • there is only one person here talking like an idiot, and it's you

  • And this is why i premix all of my skis. Oil injection systems are prone to clogging and if they do, your done. So i put a zip tie around the line to close it off with a full tank of oil. You must leave oil in the tank or you will get a warning light. Then i premix at a 50:1 ratio.

  • I've only seen a couple times when oil injection has failed, it rarely ever happens.

  • thats not true. ive nvr had a prob wit the oil injection in my sled and how much u wana bet the deal will say the same as me dumb ass.

  • hey, don't insult me over the internet. i was just giving some advice. if you don't like it, tough shit. but don't start talking shit.

  • and im gonna laugh when you create a lean condition and your sled blows up. Thats why Oil Injection systems are KICKASS! they change the ratio at how much throttle you give it! They truly are amazing.

  • they are kickass, when they're operating correctly. but i've been premixing for many many summers and have never had a problem, so im going to keep it that way.

  • ohhh, do you foul plugs often?

  • u pre mix ski doo gas in the summer...

  • how?

  • Do you (or anyone who reads this) know where i can find a service manual for this engine?

  • what to sell it

  • how many miles were on it? if a 2-stroke goes too long without a top end the piston skirt could shatter. most likely thats what happened.

  • yeah, I bet that's what happened. I bet there were 5000 KM on that engine. That's what the odometer said. it was a parts sled, and I bought it with the engine blown, so I didn't really care

  • u can fix that.

I had a 2 stroke that blew a hole in the case at bottom when piston skirt came off, a good welding shop welded the case and smoothed it off so the 2 halfs could fit together and seal, only cost about £30.

I did the assembly etc though obviously.

  • you can tell what happened by how purple the connecting rod is. the bearings probably got to hot and then got shot or flatted the wrist pin bearing that is and then the piston got slop but most of the time it takes you're bottom end out first.

  • no, this is what happens when the clearence from piston to cylinder is too large. causes piston slap which ends up shattering one of the skirts. both bearings were fine. I sold them for 5 bucks each

  • why would you have to small of pistons in it that also does it i was just saying the most logical thing that could have happened but yea to small of a piston will do it to.

  • well you see, as an engine gets old, it becomes worn. btw, rods don't get purple. that's how they are

  • thats rebuildable mine was wors i cracked the case and every thin what that come off a blizzard?

  • It just so happens that I have a 462 Rotax with the clutch in my garage for $250.00 Ran great.

  • yeah, but ur in the US... thanks anyways, already have one that I got for 300 canadian WITH a parts skidoo!

  • Good. Hows she run?

  • great! check out my other vids. I have one of me fooling around in a school soccer field lol

  • Nice. That engine I've got came out of a 1984 SS25. It ran but the hyfax had some issues so I decided to part it out.

  • hey same prob i had with my 2000 mxz 700 mag cylinder wrist pin clip came out and the piston hooked a port took the skirt right off and runed me crank berrings i got her re bilt for 1000 new sleeve on one side the damaged side honed the other 2 new pistons rings rod berrings all new crank berrings and gaskets.

  • lol my seadoo was dead after the owner we got from didnt winter it so it cracked and he also put wrong bearings in it $1000 later %98 brand new with new rings, piston, cylinder and head.

  • any way how much you want for it il come get it

  • what would you put it in? do you have a liquid cooled skidoo? or a radiator laying around? I think I want to keep it as parts for my other 462. btw, I think the oil injector is clogged. it heated up and the piston skirt came off and was crushed and shattered. 500 bucks is not going to rebuild this. a top end rebuild kit without the rods would be 300 bucks easy. rods go for 95 bucks a peice, so you;re already looking at 500, and then getting it boored would be at least 100 bucks a cylinder.

  • I have only seen pistons do that when they have been cheapies or used for to long, often sieze at high revs. The skirt can punch hole in cases aswell!

    A 2 into 1 on a 2 stroke!?

Just clean out crank and replace 1 piston if the cylinder is ok? bit gash but u could still get some usage?

or get second hand cylinder and piston.

Bearings r harder than piston material, if u clean em out good u may be fine?

  • you could probily rebuild it for 500$

  • This was probily caused buy exsessive piston to wall clearance witch causes piston slap and brakes piston skirts if i was u id rebuild it looks like easy rebuild

  • no, I won't rebuild it because I will need to get both jugs bored, 2 new pistons, 2 new sets of rings, 2 new wrist pins, 2 sets or wrist pin clamps, new gaskets, new rods and rod bearings. I would have to split the crank case, because all the millions of shattered peices of metal are down in there. I would need to get the 2 halves of the crank case resealed. do you have any idea of what that would cost?

and then there are the unknown damages. I might find some surprises in the crank case.

  • the guy also ran it blown for 5 minutes. all those metal shards probably did damage in places that I can't see yet.

  • hah how did that happen

  • lol, no clue. wouldn't have happened if it had been mine

  • Thats a pisser- y coulda mounted the motor on a lawntractor...

I had that happen with my old arctic cat- the carb leaned out the oil mix and popped a hole in top of the piston- the odd thing was it still ran, but badly with hardly any power.

  • probably because it was still running on the other cylinder

  • It was still running on both cylenders- there was just a huge hole in the top of the one piston- the only way I knew that was when i pulled the sparkplug and saw the top of the wrist pin holding the piston on the rod.

  • that's fucked

  • My dad rebuilt it tho for me-cost a couple hundred bucks

  • no problem, same to you
