This song was written and the 'holy mother' is a woman whom he knew no identity. He wrote this when he started taking up drinking again in the 80s. As he says, music helps to heal the soul. Luckily he is the greatest songwriter ever so he can heal himself quite well.
Per Eric himself (read his book) he wrote this song in his darkest hour of his addictions. He dedicated this to Richard Manuel; didn't write it because of him.
This song is not a tribute to the Holy Mother, although it certainly calls upon Her for answers. It was written in response to the suicide of Richard Manuel of the group The Band, who hung himself in March 1986. Clapton's album "August" was recorded in April and May of '86. Manuel was a good friend who had a history of depression and addiction. His death was a huge tragedy for his friends and the music community. He was one of the greats. This song is a beautiful tribute and expression of grief.
@haileysinsanity he wrote this song about his mom and not knowing her fully as far as i know his daughter is alive ruth clapton a supposed love child secret, his son died connor clapton R.I.P
this song reminds me of my mum who died shortly after hearing this song for the 1st time, the worst time of my life. I still miss her to this day 22yrs on and it brings a tear to my eyes.
I'm sad, not only because the music is great, but because there isn't one comment on the front page here about Richard Manuel, who Eric wrote this song for.
@jackbwise I could not agree more! The Band is probably the most underrated group of all time. Just look at all the folks they influenced: Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, and Elton John to name a few...
I identify with Eric Clapton. He's my brother in spirit!. I love him. I miss him. I play his music to reminds me what a great musician and person he really was!
So beatiful! the guitar, lyrics, chorus, anything that ever happened at this time was just like magic ..really don't know how to say it other than this was a masterpiece and it will always be in my mind...when I die...I want this tune played for me! and I have already told my children this!
this song saved my life. i was a hairline away from losing it and i heard this song. it made me think of my mother and gave me the will to put my life back together. cherish your mothers people. they wont be around forever.
This song and particularly the solo are a lesson for those people who think shredding is the be-all and end-all of guitar playing. 11 - 12 seconds of a single note with only the vibrato varying and he can still bring a tear to the eyes like no-one else can. Now that is musicianship. This one song proves that touch, feel, emotion etc all bring more to the music than speed alone ever could.

I saw him play this at the old Met Center in Minneapolis in '87. He had his eyes closed the whole second half of the song, just letting the notes pour out. It was clear he was hurting personally at the time and trying to get straight. Thankfully, he did!!
Some people don't see that on this what's important is the music - not the will of trying to get attention. if we can delete all the post that only bring noise to it... We can hear and see one of the most powerfull solo of EC. one of my favorite performances.
I don't know how he can sing this song and Tears in Heaven without crying. I'm such a fan of The Band and when I hear this song I get so choked up. Richard Manuel was such a huge talent , he and Rick Danko. So missed, so tragic.

It does not get better than this , he is lost in the music during the solo , eyes closed , playing from his soul, you can't teach playing like this , anyone can play the notes , but it takes someone special to play with this kind of passion
makes my eyes water every time i hear this song because you can feel all his emotion. I cant imagine what it would be like to hear this live as i've never seen him live. I would kill to see clapton only if it was for 1 second of my life.

This is for me the ultimate prayer. I try to recite it everyday. For me it is the Pagan prayer to lie in Peace one day within the bosom of the Earth, Mother of Us All
I saw him play this live from the 6th row in Bloomington, MN when I was 15 years old. The song was brand new but the crowd was mesmerized. What I remember best is that his eyes were closed the whole time he played this song he was so absorbed.
I was brought up listening to Eric Clapton as my father is a big fan of him. I like all his music but this song always without a doubt brings me to tears every single time! It's a classic & Eric Clapton is an absolute Legend!
I must have seen Clapton live a hundred times in the front rows and I miss those times, but out of all the times- this song brought me and the crowd down to our knees every time. PEACE
Tha final solo says more than the lyrics of the song, the only traductor you need is the heart! Just amazing! Just Love it!

I'm only 16, but I need to say a few things, no modern-day songs can give me feeling like this song does. It's truly amazing.
It's really sad that there's only very few artists out there that are unheard of these days and are making wonderful music.
I hope, someone will come along with talent as pure as this, and create great music, and make us feel like we're all in a great era again.
Eric Clapton, you, along with Frank Sinatra and other artists, you're all amazing.

This is for me the ultimate prayer. I try to recite it everyday. For me it is the Pagan prayer to lie in Peace one day within the bosom of the Earth, Mother of Us All

Dedicated to Richard Manuel of The Band. Great musician and friend to Clapton, unfortunately gone too soon.
Unbelievable solo, when dedicated to a good friend, you can expect nothing less from Clapton.

I saw him play this live from the 6th row in Bloomington, MN when I was 15 years old. The song was brand new but the crowd was mesmerized. What I remember best is that his eyes were closed the whole time he played this song he was so absorbed.

Kippevel van de bovenste plank, Slowhand zingt en speelt met zoveel gevoel dat ik het niet droog kan houden bij dit mooie nummer!

I was brought up listening to Eric Clapton as my father is a big fan of him. I like all his music but this song always without a doubt brings me to tears every single time! It's a classic & Eric Clapton is an absolute Legend!

Actually Clapton says in his book that he wrote it as a cry for help near the end of his drinking. Amazing book.
