  • Tha final solo says more than the lyrics of the song, the only traductor you need is the heart! Just amazing! Just Love it!

  • This song was written and the 'holy mother' is a woman whom he knew no identity. He wrote this when he started taking up drinking again in the 80s. As he says, music helps to heal the soul. Luckily he is the greatest songwriter ever so he can heal himself quite well.

  • Where is the "I f*cking LOVE it" button when you need one?

  • when my hands no longer play.

    my voice is still.

    I fade away

    Holy Mother, then I'll be

    lying in

    safe within your arms

  • Per Eric himself (read his book) he wrote this song in his darkest hour of his addictions. He dedicated this to Richard Manuel; didn't write it because of him.

  • @prelljeama

    thank u for that clarification

  • This song is not a tribute to the Holy Mother, although it certainly calls upon Her for answers. It was written in response to the suicide of Richard Manuel of the group The Band, who hung himself in March 1986. Clapton's album "August" was recorded in April and May of '86. Manuel was a good friend who had a history of depression and addiction. His death was a huge tragedy for his friends and the music community. He was one of the greats. This song is a beautiful tribute and expression of grief.

  • Awesome tribute to our HOLY MOTHER- bless you

  • I just love this.... no other way to express how it makes me feel

    stunning

  • this man, this voice, these words, this guitar and this band makes my heart wide open, soft and so strong. love you all.

  • Eric Clapton's 1986 album, August, features his tribute to Richard Manuel entitled "Holy Mother".

  • This is the best full emotional solo ever!! Fully played on feeling. How long can you play one note and still it so beautiful.

    Respect

  • waauw.....! what an energie and what a connection...! This so individual and universal Holy Mother.

  • No one can play one note like this boy...

  • Proud anointing Eric.

  • didn't he write this song after his daughter died?

  • @haileysinsanity He wrote this song one day when the pain of his loneliness had to come out. I don't know if it's about his daughter though..

  • @haileysinsanity he wrote this song about his mom and not knowing her fully as far as i know his daughter is alive ruth clapton a supposed love child secret, his son died connor clapton R.I.P

  • @haileysinsanity No, his daughter Ruth is alive. His son Connor died in 1991.

  • this song reminds me of my mum who died shortly after hearing this song for the 1st time, the worst time of my life. I still miss her to this day 22yrs on and it brings a tear to my eyes.

  • linda canção, magnidífica interpretação do genial eric...... eric is god..

cilon valdez perusato- guaiba rs -brasil

  • Dio mio, quanto è bella la canzone di Eric Clapton.

  • will I ever find myseel? ,,,.If I ever do....Iwill by God ...let you al know...Such a beatiful song;

  • stupenda!

    patri51

  • I'm sad, not only because the music is great, but because there isn't one comment on the front page here about Richard Manuel, who Eric wrote this song for.

  • @jackbwise I could not agree more! The Band is probably the most underrated group of all time. Just look at all the folks they influenced: Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, and Elton John to name a few...

  • A true genius!

  • Every Clapton fan should read his book. Very amazing and candid.

  • Bury me to this song.

  • I identify with Eric Clapton. He's my brother in spirit!. I love him. I miss him. I play his music to reminds me what a great musician and person he really was!

  • @Bonivino8 what a great musicial and person he really IS.

  • @Bonivino8 Ahem. He's not dead. FYI.

  • WOW......just....WOW

  • So beatiful! the guitar, lyrics, chorus, anything that ever happened at this time was just like magic ..really don't know how to say it other than this was a masterpiece and it will always be in my mind...when I die...I want this tune played for me! and I have already told my children this!

  • this song saved my life. i was a hairline away from losing it and i heard this song. it made me think of my mother and gave me the will to put my life back together. cherish your mothers people. they wont be around forever.

  • replay button ^^

  • I'm not crying.. i just got something in both my eyes.

  • is this heaven?

  • Oh - what a number

    Oh - what a singer

    Oh - what a solo

  • This song and particularly the solo are a lesson for those people who think shredding is the be-all and end-all of guitar playing. 11 - 12 seconds of a single note with only the vibrato varying and he can still bring a tear to the eyes like no-one else can. Now that is musicianship. This one song proves that touch, feel, emotion etc all bring more to the music than speed alone ever could.

  • I have read the comments here and no one had said that ec has never had any guiter lessons.now that really says alot about ec.guys who have had guiter lessons cant compete with the master of all time.I dont believe that we will ever have another ec.this will be a real tragedy for all of us and the

  • I saw him play this at the old Met Center in Minneapolis in '87. He had his eyes closed the whole second half of the song, just letting the notes pour out. It was clear he was hurting personally at the time and trying to get straight. Thankfully, he did!!

  • This is just.. the best.

I'm only 16, but I need to say a few things, no modern-day songs can give me feeling like this song does. It's truly amazing.

It's really sad that there's only very few artists out there that are unheard of these days and are making wonderful music.

I hope, someone will come along with talent as pure as this, and create great music, and make us feel like we're all in a great era again.

Eric Clapton, you, along with Frank Sinatra and other artists, you're all amazing.

  • @Blink182Plus44Rules well said

  • Some people don't see that on this what's important is the music - not the will of trying to get attention. if we can delete all the post that only bring noise to it... We can hear and see one of the most powerfull solo of EC. one of my favorite performances.

  • I don't know how he can sing this song and Tears in Heaven without crying. I'm such a fan of The Band and when I hear this song I get so choked up. Richard Manuel was such a huge talent , he and Rick Danko. So missed, so tragic.

  • you are a total wanker EC is god not stephen bishop and who the fuck you calling a slimey faggot let your self be known i will seriousley kick your ass you fuckin arsehole

  • EC is god this is a classic under rated song but true EC fans love it its from the august album which is great also.

  • Probably the most underrated song I've ever heard. Clapton is GOD in disguise.

  • @3:15 kicks me so hard. so simple, yet so powerful. his soul is playing :)

  • Damn... Nothing I have to say matters. They said "Clapton is God" I'm starting to believe them.....

  • When my hands no longer play,

My voice is still, I fade away.

    Holy mother, then I'll be.....

eric is hero for me to playing guitar..

  • This was written by Stephen Bishop.

  • @fortehlulz9999

No, it was written by Eric. Check his autobiography.

  • @petervankan1 Wrong, motherfucker.

    songfacts . com /detail . php?id=14168

  • @fortehlulz9999 stephen bishop my arse this is an eric clapton song

  • @johnpault1 Again, keep thinking that. It was written by Bishop & Clapton in the mid-80's. It even says so in the liner notes on "August". Dig your head out your ass, you sorry limey faggot.

  • @fortehlulz9999 listen you are a wanker do not even try and fuck with me because you are talking totla shite you snidey bastard who are and where are u from if a problemlem lets get it on do not dare call me names again ya prick ..............

  • @fortehlulz9999 you are a total arsehole who are you and where are you from? do not dare call me a faggot over a clapton song you fukin wanker

  • @johnpault1 Eat a dick, you British sissy. I schooled you on who wrote the song. Sorry if the facts don't agree with your fantasy. Break out a copy of "August" and you'll see I am right. That is if you can take a break from blowing the Muslims who are ruling over your pansies over there. LOL

  • It does not get better than this , he is lost in the music during the solo , eyes closed , playing from his soul, you can't teach playing like this , anyone can play the notes , but it takes someone special to play with this kind of passion

  • This is the most amazing feeling listening to music i have ever had! The heart and soul from everyone just phenominal

  • i love eric. i love this song.

  • this touches the soul so deeply.. few can express themselves so well through their playing from the heart like Eric.. this style will never go out of fashion.

  • Profound

  • Surely best of eric clapton

  • it says in his autobiography that the song was written when we was so desperade because of the booze that he "surrender" and asked for help....it says in his book that he wrote the song while feeling that....don't think it was dedicated to a friend!

  • truly a masterpiece!

  • @ejlaparram if that happens Satan will come to earth and destroy us al, his music scares all evil on earth! :)

  • @ejlaparram This amazing music was dedied to richard manuel, eric' friend who hanged hinself.

  • @rogemasc As far as I know, it wasn't like this. In his book Eric wrote, that he composed this song when he tried to get rid of alcohol/narcotics problems and he begged "Holy mother" to help him with this tough task !

I really love this song, this is my favorite from Eric now. And this version here I like more than the album version.

    Clapton IS god !

  • @rainis007 Ok....you are probably right. I do not know the clapton's book.t However, in the original vinil version of august's album, there is, exatly on the song holy mother, the words: dedied to richard manuel.

    Clapton is god!

  • @rogemasc Well, let's say that this song is written about getting rid of addiction and later dedicated to Richard Manuel ;)

  • i have been an eric clapton fan since i was in high school (1965). his music touches me in many ways. it makes smile at memories and helps remembers those i have loved and lost. i can't imagine my world without eric to see me through. in this crazy world, it is good to have someone ato be able to touch your soul and remind you of what's good. john

  • After reading his book, I can't help but get a little choked up when I hear this and see this video. He really was in a bad way when he wrote this and it comes from a very real place.

  • eric clapton is like bach beethoven he's amazing

  • I saw him play this live from the 6th row in Bloomington, MN when I was 15 years old. The song was brand new but the crowd was mesmerized. What I remember best is that his eyes were closed the whole time he played this song he was so absorbed.

  • Beautiful. Eric sings with so much emotion. I love it. Nadine
