@jimmysteller they did portray Howlin' Wolf in that sense. This scene just focused on his rivalry with Muddy Waters and how he despised the fact that Muddy would always go to Chess for a handout instead of standing on his own two feet. Howlin' Wolf was a strong black man like you said, and I think they portrayed it perfectly throughout the movie. Not to mention he scared the shit out of you as well.
I love the portrayal. He doesn't come across as arrogant. He comes across as a guy who doesn't take s***. Strong and confident. I loved it! It was this portrayal that made me go out and buy Howlin' Wolf music.
Howlin' Wolf, in my point of view was portrayed well in this movie. He was a man with moral, but every man has a rival every once in a while. He didn't like the way, that some men get in the music business and loose their manhood. They let ppl cheat them for a little royalty. He owned his own, and nothing owned him, he felt that was a part of being a man, and it is.
@ 00:57 You see that old man next to Hubert? Well, that old man is the REAL Hubert, in case y'all didn't know. I love when they put the actual person in the movie, and nobody knows.
This music still sounds fresh. I know this version wasn't a real recording but just the same this song in general holds up. Still sounds like sex. I'm 24. All of the rest of my generation should open up their ears to this.
@MrMattRocker Got to agree, but I think this version is great, maybe it's 'cos of the video, but it send shivers down my spine. Eamon Walker oughta sing some more Howlin Wolf sometime.
The way they portrayed Howlin' Wolf was quite off from history. They make him look like an arrogant seducer who was capable of casual murder.
He was none of those things. He was a brave man in his middle age who made sure nobody was screwing him or his band out of the money they earned. Unlike the dozens of other blues artists that got ripped off, Wolf got his money in hand and didn't waste it on booze or whores. He was a well-grounded person with a scary persona that sold well to the public
@JimmySteller I love your description of Howlin' Wolf, however, I disagree with your assessment of his portrayal. I believe that what you described as accurate is how he was portrayed in the film. Granted, in this scene, he's seen as a bit arrogant and seductive, but that's the nature of blues...or at least a part of it. Smokestack Lightening is HOT!
@JimmySteller I know this is a little late, but that's not true. The movie made him look like a *man* with some testicles who was not to be screwed over. Unfortunately he made Muddy look like a sucker in the process. Even Littel Walter told Muddy to take a tip from Wolf. He seemed pretty admirable to me.
@JimmySteller what do u mean by, "scary persona"? my dad told me about this guy when i was first learning guitar. i know he was a real big man, is that what u meant?
Well, 'scary persona' might not have been the best wording, but yeah, basically through his size and the way he carried himself. It's well known that he was always faithful to his wife. He didn't do drugs, he didn't throw away money, he stayed grounded and successful. And he even went back to school to study business so that he wouldn't get f&&&d over by one-sided contracts. I just wish they'd gone more into that part of Wolf's character rather than just his rivalry with Waters.
@JimmySteller thanx, i didn't know that much about him. just that he had a unique style. i like him. sounds like he was a pretty smart man too...thx again.
@JimmySteller i dont think they portrayed him as arrogant at all. i think they just showed him as tryna brove a point and not takin shit.. they portrayed exactly as you see him :)

Is that the real Hubert Summlin sitting next to the actor "playing" Hubert Summlin? Kind of looks like him to me but I might be wrong.

@JimmySteller I didn't get the arrogant seducer vibe from him. He was just about his business and wouldn't tolerate being disrespected.

@JimmySteller There were several fictitious elements in this movie. I realize it wasn't meant to be a retelling, but I was still disappointed in it.
